Most people are sure that such familiar dark spots (moles) appear on us from birth. But this is not true. These formations got their name not because they can be found on newborns, but because they are passed on from parents, that is, genetically. Nevi on the skin appear in a small number of children. In addition, the spots that we can see on the skin of babies are called "birthmarks". They develop in parallel with the child, increasing with his age.
When do children get moles? This question does not sound quite correct, since they are, most often, practically invisible on the baby's skin. At first, they can be so light that they are difficult to notice right away. After some time, its shade intensifies, the mole becomes dark and noticeable. And only then do parents realize that their child has a nevus.
For what reasons do nevi begin to appear on a child’s body?
- Genetic predisposition. This is the main reason. If one of the parents has a mole in an interesting or unusual place, then most likely the child will also have it. Sometimes such formations do not decorate the body at all, but do not rush to get rid of the nevus at an early age, since after the operation it can grow again in the same place.
- Hormonal changes. Although they are extremely rare in infancy, this reason should not be dismissed.
- Birthmarks can also appear if a child has been in the sun for too long. Under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, processes are activated that enhance the growth of nevi.
Some children are born with birthmarks. This most often happens if:
- A child with very light skin.
- Premature babies.
- Female children. Girls are usually much more likely to be born with nevi than boys.
Birthmarks in babies are slightly different from those that adults notice on their skin. Most birthmarks begin to form and grow in the first months after birth. Common and vascular nevi in children are distinguished. Vascular nevi are those that are based on a large number of small red or pink vessels. Sometimes they protrude above the skin. They cannot develop into malignant tumors, but most often they are removed due to their unpleasant appearance.
Regular ones have a dark shade, sometimes flat, sometimes convex. They appear on the skin up to a year. Often, hairs grow in the middle of such a birthmark, which is a good sign. But if a nevus appears on the foot or palm of a child, it is better to remove it.
Try to carefully examine your baby's body from time to time for the presence of vascular nevi and immediately consult a doctor if a slight swelling or a bluish or pinkish tint appears on the skin. Vascular birthmarks are:
- Hemangiomas.
- Birthmarks of a pinkish color (salmon shade).
- Wine stains.
Hemangioma does not appear for a very long time (within two or three weeks after the birth of the child), but it may not be immediately visible. It can be located anywhere. It grows and increases in size up to a year and a half, and then begins to noticeably lighten until it merges with the body. It completely disappears by the age of ten.
A pink birthmark is also known as a "stork bite". It usually appears on the back of the head, forehead, eyelids or bridge of the nose. It is either large in size or consists of a huge number of small spots.
A port-wine stain is usually red and is located on the head or face. It can increase in size with age. There is no point in removing such a stain, as it will reappear and does not go away over time. Modern medicine offers two treatment methods:
- Laser therapy.
- Infrared radiation.
Sometimes such port wine stains cannot be cured, then the only solution is cosmetics.
Why do moles appear on a child?
Sometimes it happens that nevi begin to appear on the baby's body in quite large clusters. This process certainly frightens parents who do not know why moles appear on their child. As a rule, the formation of such spots begins in those who spend too much time under the active sun. Do not forget that ultraviolet light is very harmful to the child's body, so try not to take the baby outside during too sunny hours.
If you still want to spend a day with your child on the yarn, it is worth choosing the right protection for him. Today, manufacturers offer a huge range of products with a high level of protection from ultraviolet rays, which are suitable even for small children. Do not forget to apply such creams or gels to the baby's skin every time before going to the beach or walking on a sunny day.
Often, a large number of new moles appear in children during adolescence. This can be explained by the fact that a hormonal imbalance occurs in the body of a teenager, which can lead to the formation of nevi.
At what age do children get moles?
The first nevi appear on our body in early childhood, but only those parents who have carefully studied every millimeter of their baby's skin can know about this. Therefore, no doctor can accurately answer the question of at what age do children develop moles? It can be one year, three years, or five years, it all depends on the individual characteristics of each individual organism. But the formation depends on some factors:
- Frequency of exposure to sunlight.
- Maturation of children.
- Genetic features.
If moles on the parents' bodies began to appear quite late and there were a lot of them, then most likely you should not expect that nevi will begin to form in the child at an early age and there will be few of them. Remember, to protect the baby from the appearance of new birthmarks, it is necessary to protect his skin from sunburn in the summer, wear covering clothes and apply special creams.
So when do children get birthmarks? According to research, the first nevi form at one or two years of age. At this time, many parents start taking their children to the beach (in the summer), so even a small amount of ultraviolet light is usually enough for nevi to begin to darken and appear. If the appearance of birthmarks frightens you, you can take your child to a doctor who will carefully examine the baby's skin and tell you what to do with the birthmarks. Remember that malignant nevi are almost never found in children, but it is worth monitoring their development and the child's reaction to them.
