Treatment of a spinal hernia should first be aimed at eliminating the factors that cause this pathology: normalizing metabolism, improving blood microcirculation, reducing the load on the joints, and eliminating muscle tension.

In the treatment of vertebral hernia, several directions can be distinguished:

  • etiotropic treatment of vertebral hernia – aimed at detecting and neutralizing the cause of the disease. It is a very effective method of treatment, allowing not only to minimize the symptoms of the disease, but also to prevent its development. The fundamental principles of this method are a healthy lifestyle, consumption of healthy products, moderate physical activity, and therapeutic exercise in order to restore the natural functioning of the vertebral joints and discs.
  • pathogenetic treatment of vertebral hernia – influencing the mechanisms that contribute to the progression of the disease (for example, acupuncture).
  • Symptomatic treatment of vertebral hernia is aimed at eliminating the external signs of the existing pathology.

Treatment of vertebral hernia: an overview of the main methods

  • Cryotherapy is a method of adjuvant therapy. It consists of local application of cold with liquid nitrogen. It improves blood circulation in the damaged area, reduces swelling of nerve roots, and increases the ability of tissues to recover.
  • Hirudotherapy is a treatment using leeches. This method has a fairly good effect by saturating the body with bioactive substances, and is carried out strictly under the supervision of a doctor.
  • Laser therapy - irradiation of the affected area without destroying the disc. The advantage of this method is the low probability of relapse of the disease.
  • Spinal traction (horizontal or vertical) – helps reduce compression on nerve roots, swelling of nearby tissues, and tension in muscles and tendons.
  • Reflexotherapy – helps relieve pain and swelling. It is performed by inserting special needles into bioactive points, has a calming and restorative effect.
  • Electrophoresis is a common method of physiotherapy, in which the body is simultaneously exposed to electric current and medications.
  • Vacuum therapy (treatment using vacuum cups) is a method that allows you to relieve pain quickly and painlessly, activates microcirculation of fluid in the body, and neutralizes toxins.
  • Manual therapy is a method aimed at normalizing the range of motion of the vertebral joints, increasing the elasticity of the muscular and ligamentous apparatus by manipulating both individual vertebrae and entire segments of the spine. This procedure should only be performed by an experienced specialist, otherwise the body may be irreparably harmed. The interval between sessions can be from one to seven days.
  • Magnetopuncture is the effect of a constant or alternating magnetic field on bioactive points.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – reduce pain, stiffness, swelling of joints, and help increase range of motion. The drugs in this group include movalis, revmoxicam, diclofenac, piroxicam, indomethacin, and ketoprofen.
  • Applications with diluted dimexide, novocaine and hydrocortisone to the affected area.
  • Drugs that relieve muscle spasms - sirdalud, baclofen, myolastin.
  • Vitamin therapy – intramuscular administration of vitamin B, as well as C and E, is prescribed to eliminate neurological problems caused by this disease, and improve tissue sensitivity.
  • Chondroprotectors - with their help the regeneration process occurs faster and degeneration of cartilage tissue slows down, it is possible to use glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate. They are used mainly as a restorative treatment.

It should be clearly understood that the treatment of a spinal hernia cannot be successful with the help of medications alone; they only have an additional effect to alleviate the symptoms of the disease.

Massage procedures for spinal hernia should be performed using soft and gentle techniques. Careless manipulations can provoke serious complications and sharply worsen the condition.

Surgical treatment of a herniated disc is prescribed if conservative treatment does not produce a positive effect.
