A sweet taste in the mouth can occur for various reasons. If it is caused by recent consumption of some sweets (candy, chocolate, cakes, etc.), then this is normal. Otherwise, it will most likely indicate the presence of some disorder in the body, a disease that occurs in a latent form.
Causes sweet taste in the mouth
A sweet taste can be caused by a wide variety of disorders, including:
- Gastrointestinal diseases: due to digestive disorders, there is a constant sensation of sweetness in the mouth. Most often, this problem is faced by people suffering from GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. This disorder provokes the movement of gastric hydrochloric acid upward, as a result of which it penetrates the esophagus. As a result, there is a violation of taste sensations, and chest pain is also observed;
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common causative agent of various diseases, including nasal diseases. Under the influence of these bacteria, taste sensations are disrupted, and the work of receptors is disrupted. As a result of the defeat of the nose by this infection, congestion, chest pain, breathing problems occur - as a result, a disorder of taste buds occurs;
- a sweet taste may appear as a result of quitting smoking;
- chemical intoxication (such as phosgene or pesticides);
- liver pathologies or problems with the functioning of the pancreas;
- metabolic disorder (including carbohydrate metabolism) that occurs as a result of excessive consumption of sweets;
- stress and nervous tension, diseases of the trigeminal and facial nerves - in case of such disorders it is necessary to undergo a comprehensive examination by a neurologist;
- diabetes mellitus, in which a sweet taste is felt due to a lack of insulin;
- dental diseases.
Symptoms sweet taste in the mouth
Usually, a sweet taste occurs as a result of a metabolic disorder that develops due to poor nutrition - for example, in the case of overeating. When this symptom appears, other signs of a disorder also appear, which can be tracked independently - it is necessary to carefully examine the tongue. If there is a coating on it, the color of which changes from gray to darker shades, it is likely that the problem is precisely in the violation of the diet. Such an examination should be carried out in the morning, immediately after sleep.
Sweet sour taste in the mouth
A sweet and sour taste in the mouth may be a sign of impaired glucose tolerance, prediabetes or diabetes. In addition, the following symptoms are observed with this disease:
- Frequent urination, persistent thirst, and copious urine output;
- Constant feeling of hunger; in addition, the patient may suffer from obesity and rapidly lose weight;
- General feeling of weakness, visual impairment (appearance of the so-called “veil over the eyes”);
- Problems with blood circulation – tingling in the lower extremities, numbness.
It should be noted that in some cases, the development of diabetes occurs asymptomatically, manifesting itself only as a feeling of sweetness in the mouth.
Sweet taste in mouth in the morning
The most common cause of sweetness in the mouth in the morning is a digestive disorder, as well as pancreatitis. In addition, the disease is accompanied by symptoms such as heartburn or burning in the chest. Since insulin is produced by the endocrine part of the pancreas, in the event of a violation of its functions, the production of this hormone decreases or completely stops. As a result, the process of glucose breakdown stops, which leads to an increase in blood sugar levels. Also, due to reflux, the sweet taste in the mouth is complemented by a sour taste with an unpleasant sour taste.
Dry mouth along with a sweet taste is usually a sign that a person is developing pancreatitis. Bitter sweet taste in the mouth
A bitter-sweet taste in the mouth is usually a symptom of the development of a pathology of one of the internal organs - the intestines, pancreas or stomach, as well as the liver and biliary tract (dyskinesia of the biliary tract and gallbladder, acute or chronic cholecystitis).
Sweet taste in mouth and nausea
A feeling of nausea along with a sweet taste can be a symptom of many different gastrointestinal diseases. If the problem is in poor nutrition, an additional symptom is the presence of a grayish coating on the tongue. If nausea and sweetness in the mouth are the result of stress, then this symptom disappears on its own after about 3 days.
If you have this problem for more than 4-5 days, you should consult a gastroenterologist, as this may be a sign of a serious illness.
Sweet taste in mouth during pregnancy
During pregnancy, many things change in a woman's body, and taste sensations are no exception, since the functions of many body systems undergo functional restructuring or some organic pathologies develop. Usually, a sweet taste in the mouth during pregnancy is a sign of gestational diabetes. Since the pancreas is unable to cope with the load, the sugar level in the urine, blood, and saliva increases, which leads to the appearance of sweetness in the mouth. The following factors can cause gestational diabetes:
- late pregnancy;
- chronic diseases of the digestive system;
- the pregnant woman is overweight;
- there were developmental defects observed during previous pregnancies;
- too large fruit;
- pancreatitis or polyhydramnios.
Complications and consequences
If the cause of the sweet taste is a disease of the internal organs, then without appropriate treatment it can develop into a chronic form. Often this symptom becomes a harbinger of the development of diabetes.
Pregnant women may experience gestational diabetes, which also has its complications:
- Problems with the function of the urinary system, resulting in swelling;
- Blood pressure increases;
- Cerebral blood flow is disrupted;
- Late toxicosis develops.
Diagnostics sweet taste in the mouth
If you constantly feel a sweet taste in your mouth, you need to consult an endocrinologist as soon as possible, who will conduct an examination and identify the accompanying symptoms in order to diagnose the cause of the unpleasant taste.
Before visiting an endocrinologist, it is recommended to visit a general practitioner for an examination, as well as a dentist to rule out the possibility of developing dental diseases.

Tests
To make a correct diagnosis, laboratory tests are required: a blood test for sugar levels, as well as a biochemical analysis, which allows you to identify the state of the pancreas, and in addition, makes it possible to assess the state of metabolism in the body.

Instrumental diagnostics
Additional instrumental studies are also carried out - FGDS procedures, as well as ultrasound of the abdominal organs, and in addition, X-rays using a contrast agent.
Treatment sweet taste in the mouth
If all examinations and tests have not revealed any pathologies, but the sweet taste in the mouth continues to persist, you should use the following recommendations:
- Change your diet - reduce the amount of foods that contain a lot of carbohydrates, and also consume less processed foods and carbonated drinks. In general, this is useful in any case, as it allows you to reduce the load on the digestive system and reduce blood sugar levels;
- Maintain oral hygiene - with regular rinsing after meals, as well as brushing your teeth twice a day (the procedure should be carried out for at least 5 minutes), the unpleasant taste and odor from the mouth will disappear. As a liquid for rinsing, you can use a solution of soda and salt, as well as tincture of sage or chamomile - these products effectively eliminate the unpleasant taste;
- Include spices, greens, and citrus fruits in your diet – a slice of orange, lemon, or grapefruit helps to freshen up your mouth. Coffee beans, mint leaves, and cinnamon sticks are also considered effective in combating unpleasant tastes (their effect is longer, too).
If an organic pathology is detected that causes a sweet taste in the mouth, treatment is carried out according to international protocols by the appropriate specialist.
Forecast
A sweet taste in the mouth can be a symptom of many diseases, some of which can have serious health consequences. Therefore, in this case, the prognosis will depend on the cause that provoked this symptom. If this taste is caused by stress or eating a lot of sweets, it will disappear on its own after some time.
