Dental enamel is the tissue that covers the dental crown. Its main function is to protect teeth from mechanical and chemical damage. The thickness of the enamel in the chewing part of the tooth is a maximum of 1.7 mm, on the sides it is much thinner, and at the neck it is almost nonexistent. Since it is constantly exposed to aggressive negative influence of environmental factors (which results in problems such as mechanical damage, leaching of fluorine and calcium particles from the enamel), strengthening the tooth enamel is a necessary procedure for every person.
Means for strengthening tooth enamel
There are many ways to strengthen tooth enamel, including eating certain foods.
Sesame seeds can remove plaque from teeth and strengthen enamel. They contain a lot of calcium, which protects teeth from decay.
Hard cheeses contain a lot of phosphates and calcium, and they have a low salt content. These properties help maintain the pH balance of the oral cavity, eliminating excess acid that promotes the growth of bacteria in the mouth.
Kiwi contains a lot of vitamin C, which is very important, since a deficiency of this element in the body reduces the level of collagen production. Because of this, tissues are more easily exposed to bacteria, bleeding gums begin, and periodontal disease may even appear.
Celery, horseradish, shiitake mushrooms, onions, and green tea have an antibacterial effect, help clean teeth from plaque, protect the oral cavity from the proliferation of bacteria that cause caries, and also eliminate bad breath.
Medicinal toothpastes for strengthening tooth enamel
Medicinal toothpaste has some differences from preventive toothpaste – it contains a much higher concentration of active substances. Medicinal toothpastes for strengthening tooth enamel, such as LACALUT fluor, PRESIDENT Unique, SPLAT Biocalcium, Sensodyne Repair & Protect, Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief, Biorepair are suitable not only for preventing caries, but also treat its initial stage – chalky white spots that appear on tooth enamel.
Such chalky spots are a consequence of enamel demineralization. They occur because the enamel tissue has lost many microelements. Among the medicinal substances that can restore demineralized areas of tooth enamel and strengthen its strength are calcium and fluoride compounds.
Gels for strengthening tooth enamel
Remineralizing gels that help restore enamel, such as Elmex Gelee, ROCS Medical Minerals, LACALUT fluor Gel, Splat Likvum-Gel, Tooth Mousse help heal gums and strengthen enamel. Due to poor quality food, poor ecology and poor oral hygiene, the balance of flora in the mouth can be disrupted. Low-abrasive gels with a high concentration of therapeutic elements can be used for prevention or treatment. They are usually applied in the form of applications. To improve the quality of remineralizing therapy, you can use mouth guards. After applying the product, you are not allowed to drink for about 1 hour.
Vitamins for strengthening tooth enamel
Vitamins B6 and B12 are suitable for strengthening enamel – they have a positive effect on the condition and functioning of gums, bones and teeth.
Vitamin D3 acts as a means of promoting the renewal and strengthening of enamel. This element helps better absorption of calcium and phosphorus (and these substances are the basis of tooth enamel).
Strengthening tooth enamel with folk remedies
There are various folk methods for strengthening tooth enamel. Among the most radical measures is cleaning the dental tissue with the white pulp of lemon peel. But this method is recommended to be used only if other options are not possible at all, since this substance has a rather aggressive effect on gums and teeth.
Brush your teeth with a powder soaked in water, which is obtained from 2 crushed tablets of activated charcoal - perform the procedure twice a week.
For about 7-10 days, rinse your mouth in the evenings with a regular solution of soda or sea salt (1 tablespoon of powder per 1 glass of warm water).
Another effective way is to stop drinking beverages (such as sweet soda) that contribute to the development of demineralization of tooth enamel.
Strengthening tooth enamel at home
To strengthen tooth enamel at home, in addition to brushing your teeth, you need to do some additional procedures. For example, apply toothpaste to your teeth and hold it for about 2-3 minutes - this method will help the beneficial elements to be better absorbed into the enamel.
You can do a small gum massage. After washing your hands, massage the gum surface with your fingers using simple circular movements - first from right to left, and then vice versa. This method improves blood circulation in the gums, which in turn helps improve the nutrition of the enamel.
Self-administration of tooth remineralization - it is carried out by consuming products containing calcium and other mineral elements. Firstly, this is milk and fermented milk products, and secondly - lentils, beans, peas, beans, broccoli, celery and other vegetables, as well as fruits (it should be noted that they must be eaten fresh - only then will they be as useful as possible). Such remineralization should be carried out by everyone, but it is especially necessary for pregnant women, since they have a much higher risk of enamel destruction.
Before you start strengthening your tooth enamel on your own, you should consult with your dentist to get recommendations on the best fluoride and calcium-containing medications for your teeth. The doctor will also be able to tell you how to properly massage your gums. Only with proper oral care will your teeth remain healthy and beautiful.
Strengthening tooth enamel in children
Strengthening a child's tooth enamel can be done using the fluoridation procedure.
Fluoride is an important microelement for the body, promoting proper tooth growth. During the fluoridation process, dentists use specific compounds of this substance – fluorides. They help reduce the solubility of tooth enamel and reduce the amount of acid secreted by bacteria. In addition, fluorides help restore damaged enamel.
There are two methods of dental fluoridation: simple and deep.
Simple fluoridation is performed in 2 ways:
- The enamel is covered with a special varnish containing fluoride. First, the dentist removes plaque from the teeth, then applies the product to their surface and then dries it with a lamp. For a better effect, you should start fluoridating with varnish immediately after the child's teeth erupt, and repeat it regularly - twice a year.
- Applying special molds (caps) to the teeth. They are made individually for each patient, and inside they are filled with a fluoride-containing substance, for example, Paro Fluor Gel with fluoride and aminofluoride or Torex therapeutic gel with fluorides. After that, they are applied to the child's teeth for about 15 minutes. To ensure a high-quality result, it is necessary to perform 10-15 such procedures.
The deep fluoridation method is considered the most effective way to restore tooth enamel.
During the course of such a treatment procedure, a whole range of actions is carried out:
- The teeth, as well as the space between them, are cleaned of plaque and tartar, after which they are thoroughly dried;
- Next, they are treated with a product containing fluorides, as well as copper and magnesium salts, and then dried again;
- After this, the enamel is treated with calcium hydroxide.
The molecules of the components used in the procedure penetrate deep into the micropores of the tooth enamel, promoting high-quality remineralization and providing a long-lasting bactericidal effect. Deep fluoridation of teeth should be performed at least once every 12 months.
