Diseases of the mammary glands are accompanied by visual and tangible symptoms. One of the most common signs is a lump near the nipple. Its structure and volume depend on the pathological process in the body.
ICD-10 code
The International Classification of Diseases includes all types of diseases, including mastopathy. This documentation is widely used by medical personnel around the world. Improvement of standardization and inclusion of adjustments in it is carried out every few decades. According to the ICD 10 code, pathological formations in the mammary glands are numbered N60-N64.
N60 - benign breast dysplasia. This category includes fibrocystic mastopathy (N60.0), solitary cyst of the mammary gland (N60.1). It excludes lesions with epithelial proliferation N60.2 - fibroadenosis of the mammary gland. This does not include fibroadenoma of the mammary glands, namely N60.3 - fibrosclerosis. N60.4 - ectasia of the mammary ducts. N60.8 other benign dysplasias of the mammary gland. N60.9 - benign dysplasia of the mammary gland, unspecified.
For clinical practice, it is customary to use the classification set out in the methodological recommendations 'Tactics of a comprehensive examination of women with diffuse changes in the mammary gland syndrome. This includes: diffuse cystic mastopathy (with a predominance of the glandular component, fibrous component, cystic component and mixed type), as well as the nodular form of fibrous cystic mastopathy.
Causes of a lump near the nipple
There are quite a few factors that influence the development of this symptom. In 45% of cases, this is facilitated by the presence of injuries to the uterus and the mammary gland itself. In the affected areas, degeneration of fat cells occurs, which leads to the formation of necrosis and round tumors. The most harmless causes of compaction near the nipple are wearing an uncomfortable bra and the lactation period. Incorrectly selected underwear that squeezes the breast contributes to the appearance of tubercles and lumps in it. During lactation, compaction appears due to blockage of the milk ducts.
Often, the problem is associated with the presence of a disease. This may be mastitis, thrombophlebitis, abscess formation and tumor processes. All this is accompanied by painful sensations. Diseases of the thyroid gland and adrenal glands can provoke compaction. Abortions, early menopause and the presence of gynecological diseases are the main causes of problems with the mammary glands.
A cyst can provoke a compaction. It forms inside the mammary gland, has a round shape and looks like a bubble. Fibroma leads to the development of a compaction from fibrous tissue. Adenoma is a formation from glandular tissue. Fibroadenoma can take a nodular or leaf-shaped form. The structure of the formations is different. The compaction can develop from blood vessels and fatty tissue. In the presence of an inflammatory process, so-called granulomas are formed.
The most common cause of the appearance of a lump is mastopathy. It is characterized by the presence of several nodules that can grow throughout the entire volume of the mammary gland. The nodular form of the disease has several nodes, they are mobile and practically painless. Diffuse mastopathy is characterized by the presence of multiple cysts, the growth of which occurs from glandular and fibrous tissue. A lump can be provoked by cancer or a precancerous tumor. Trying to make a diagnosis on your own is stupid; you need to seek help from a qualified doctor.
Pathogenesis
The main reason for the development of diseases is a hormonal imbalance. Hormones play one of the most important roles in a woman's body. A pathological condition that has led to a hormonal imbalance requires immediate elimination. The lack of quality treatment entails the risk of developing serious complications. Pathogenesis also includes an increase in estrogen levels. This leads to hyperplasia of the ductal part of the gland.
Increased levels of progestins develop adenous structures. As a result, pain syndrome occurs. The level of prolactin is responsible for the secretion of LH, its insufficient content contributes to the development of amenorrhea. Violation of the biological rhythm of hormone production does not allow the neuroendocrine system to work in the usual mode. When the rhythm is disrupted, the ratio of substances in the body changes, which leads to the development of serious consequences. In particular, disruption of cyclic processes in the mammary glands.
Symptoms of a lump near the nipple
The lump can be seen or felt. In most cases, a woman does not notice any abnormalities. Symptoms of a lump near the nipple appear at advanced stages of the disease. Thus, mastopathy is characterized by severe pain syndrome. It is most pronounced in the period before menstruation. In the chest, you can feel lumps of varying volume. Their size can change depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle.
Mastitis is characterized not only by severe pain, but also by elevated body temperature. The skin on the affected area takes on a reddish tint. Before menstruation, the seals can increase in size and change location.
If the formation in the breast is caused by the presence of cysts and abscesses, not only pain syndrome manifests itself, but also discharge from the nipples. Cancerous seals are located quite deep, but they can be felt. They grow towards the skin and have unclear contours. The precancerous condition (sarcoma) is characterized by the presence of large-lumpy seals, prone to rapid development. Lymphoma leads to the formation of smooth tubercles, round in shape.
First signs
Often, diseases do not manifest themselves in any way. But this statement is true only for the initial stage of the development of the pathological process. Over time, the first signs appear, characterized by severe pain syndrome. Women often seek help with complaints of breast pain. The pain can intensify before menstruation. Another main sign is the presence of seals of various shapes and sizes.
Symptoms directly depend on the disease. Thus, for cancerous conditions, the presence of pain syndrome is characteristic. For inflammatory processes - mucous discharge from the nipples. Only a specialist can make an accurate diagnosis. If pain of different localization occurs, you must go to the hospital. The seal will not go away on its own, timely treatment will save the woman's life (if we are talking about cancer).
Lump near nipple in man
The structure of male mammary glands is similar to that of females. They include ducts and lobes. In boys and mature men, lumps near the nipple may appear around the areola. More often, they are localized over the entire surface of the chest, spreading to the armpits, abdomen, and even arms. This often leads to the development of "female breasts."
This condition is associated with the growth of glandular tissue in the mammary glands. This leads to benign neoplasms, swelling of the nipples and rounding of the breast. Its size can increase by 10 cm, which brings a lot of inconvenience to the male representative.
The main reasons for the development of seals are due to hormonal imbalance. Female hormones begin to predominate in a man's body. The development of a neoplasm can be provoked by: narcotic drugs, antidepressants, antitumor drugs. This process is influenced by hereditary predisposition, the presence of chronic diseases, excess weight. Often the causes are hidden in diseases of the testicles and adrenal glands. Seals can be provoked by metabolic disorders, diabetes, and poor nutrition.
In boys, neoplasms occur at the age of 10-14 years. They are characterized by pain upon palpation and asymmetry. This phenomenon is called physiological gynecomastia. Everything disappears on its own, by the age of 18 there will be nothing left of the seals. If the formations remain, there is a risk to the patient's life. Most likely, we are talking about breast cancer.
Painful lump near the nipple
In case of benign formations, women complain of increased pain in the mammary glands. Discomfort and the feeling of a lump in the breast do not give rest. The mammary gland is a dynamic structure, which is characterized by cyclical changes in processes. Some of them can be so pronounced that they provoke the development of painful lumps near the nipple.
Most often, pain is a companion of the condition of mastodynia. A pronounced pain syndrome is observed in women during menopause. Mastodynia manifests itself in the form of discomfort that occurs in the period before menstruation. It develops as a result of cyclical coarsening of the glands, due to venous congestion or edema of the stroma.
Fibroadenoma also causes pain. This tumor often affects young women. It is characterized by the growth of connective and proliferating epithelial tissue. It is worth noting that any formation in the breast, benign or malignant, is characterized by pain syndrome.
Redness and lump around the nipple
The formation of nodules in the breast may indicate a number of possible diseases. But if there is redness and compaction near the nipple, it is mastitis.
This disease occurs in young mothers and is associated with milk stagnation in the mammary gland. It is often provoked by cracked nipples. Microbes that get into such favorable conditions lead to the development of an inflammatory process. The main pathogens of the disease are staphylococci and streptococci.
The main signs of the disease include: a lump around the nipple, a significant increase in temperature and coarsening of the mammary glands. As the disease progresses, the breasts may enlarge and become painful. The skin turns red and an abscess forms. Without timely treatment, gangrene may develop. In this case, it is important to go to the hospital in time. Taking preventive measures will help avoid the development of the disease.
Lump in the breast near the nipple
Every woman has experienced at least once a hardening of the mammary glands and a feeling of “heaviness” in them. Most often, this is observed in the period before menstruation. A lump in the breast of this type, localized near the nipple, does not pose any danger. Another matter, if everything is accompanied by pain and accompanying symptoms.
Increased temperature, pain on palpation, mucous discharge from the nipple - all these are signs of the development of inflammatory processes in the mammary glands. Moreover, they can be both benign and malignant. There are quite a lot of diseases of the mammary glands, the most common of them are mastodynia, mastitis, fibroadenoma, fibroma and cyst.
If the lump appears before menstruation and disappears after it, there should be no cause for concern. If the symptoms intensify, you should be wary. This may indicate serious health problems.
Consequences
In this case, everything depends on the cause of the compaction. If it is a common hormonal imbalance, high-quality treatment will help avoid possible consequences. If there is a malignant neoplasm, you cannot delay. Removing the tumor at an early stage will save the woman's mammary gland and life. The absence of treatment will lead to the development of metastases and death.
If the formation is benign, there is a risk of its transition to a malignant form. Finally, diseases such as mastitis without timely treatment can lead to the development of gangrene. The inflammatory process can develop rapidly, capturing most of the mammary gland.
It is important to understand that having a family history of breast cancer increases the risk of its development several times. Even harmless neoplasms in the mammary glands can become malignant. A small percentage of such developments always remains.

Complications
Untimely treatment of diseases leads to constant relapses. The most severe complication is the transition of the tumor into a malignant neoplasm.
Relapse. It can occur in case of improper treatment of some diseases, including mastopathy. Hormonal imbalance in the woman's body and the presence of pathological processes in the thyroid gland can influence this.
Cancer. Most diseases can become malignant. The risk of such a combination of circumstances, although small, still remains.
Diseases such as mastitis can develop into a purulent form, causing sepsis and bleeding erosion. The inability to fully release milk leads to its stagnation in the breast. As a result, the milk ducts become blocked. This leads to the development of a severe inflammatory process. It is worth understanding that any lump in the breast should be examined by a specialist, this will help to avoid serious complications in the future.

Diagnosis of a lump near the nipple
A lump can develop in people of any age. There are no special age restrictions or preferences in this case. A timely diagnosis and quality treatment are the key to a person's happy life. To do this, it is necessary to diagnose the lump that has formed near the nipple, identify its location and the reason for its appearance.
Modern diagnostic methods include X-ray examination and mammography. These methods allow to detect a neoplasm, even the smallest one. The breasts of young women are "scanned" with X-rays, this method is effective due to the predominance of glandular tissue in the mammary glands. Ultrasound allows to determine the neoplasm.
Ductography is a diagnostic method using a contrast agent. It is injected into the milk ducts. A biopsy allows us to distinguish a neoplasm from a malignant tumor or cyst. A puncture is a collection of material directly from the lump by puncturing the affected area. The diagnostic method is selected depending on the patient's condition and complaints.
Tests
It is impossible to make a diagnosis based on the patient's examination and complaints. A number of tests should be taken to determine the woman's condition and indicate possible deviations. First of all, a general blood test is taken. The level of leukocytes can determine the presence of an inflammatory process in the body.
On a certain day of the menstrual cycle, you will have to give blood for hormones. Usually, this is done on the 19-21, during which time the level of progesterone, prolactin, estrogen and estradiol is checked. The tests are taken depending on the recommendations of the gynecologist, and on certain days of the cycle. They may differ from the generally accepted ones. It is necessary to check the thyroid gland. For this, hormone tests are also taken.
All this is necessary to monitor the state of the woman's hormonal background. In most cases, its imbalance leads to the development of neoplasms in the mammary glands.
Instrumental diagnostics
It is difficult to make a diagnosis based on tests alone; it is necessary to resort to additional methods. These include instrumental diagnostics based on examination of the mammary glands using special devices.
- Ultrasound. Allows you to see neoplasms, their location and size. It is the most common type of diagnostics. Ultrasound of the thyroid gland is performed to exclude pathological processes in it. In 80% of cases, hormonal imbalance is the basis for the development of neoplasms in the breast.
- Radiography. Allows you to examine the mammary gland in different projections and get a clear picture of what is happening. Widely used to diagnose many diseases.
- Ductography. Consists of using a contrast agent based on iodine. Thanks to coloring, it allows determining possible deviations, the location and size of the neoplasm.
Differential diagnostics
Additional diagnostic methods include biopsy and puncture. Differential diagnostics also include studying the blood composition.
- Biopsy. This method allows you to make an accurate diagnosis. Inflammatory processes in the mammary glands are similar to each other. The biopsy method allows you to distinguish a benign neoplasm from a malignant one.
- Puncture. This method allows you to take a sample directly from the seal itself. The method is based on studying the material and determining its type. The sample is taken by puncturing the skin of the affected area with a special needle or gun.
In addition to studying the material, blood is taken for analysis. The level of ESR and leukocytes allows to confirm/refute the presence of an inflammatory process in the body. Tests for female hormones indicate hormonal imbalances in the body. Thyroid examinations allow to exclude/confirm its involvement in this process.

Treatment of a lump near the nipple
Treatment depends on the type of formation and the nature of the compaction. There are three types of elimination of the disease: conservative, surgical and complex. If a woman has fibroadenoma, treatment of this type of compaction involves removing the tumor near the nipple. Medication methods are not applicable, only surgical intervention.
Malignant neoplasms are removed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Then maintenance treatment is prescribed. In case of mastopathy, positive results can be achieved by changing lifestyle and taking medications. Hormones, vitamins, analgesics, anti-inflammatory and iodine-based medications are a typical list for eliminating the disease. In addition to hormonal drugs, it is necessary to adhere to a special diet, choose only the right bras. The therapy is supplemented with diuretics.
Surgical intervention involves the removal of the tumor. In some cases, it is removed together with the affected mammary gland. Everything depends on the nature of the formation and possible complications.
Medicines
If the neoplasm does not require surgical removal, they resort to the help of drugs. Medicines belonging to the group of hormonal medications are widely used. These include: Utrozhestan, Tamoxifen and Fareston. They resort to the help of oral contraceptives: Yarina, Regulon and Janine. To eliminate inflammation, they use Ketorol and Diclofenac. Analgin and Combispasm will help to alleviate the condition and remove pain. To relieve swelling and remove excess fluid from the body: Furosemide and Triamterene.
- Utrozhestan. The drug helps to normalize the menstrual cycle and hormonal levels. It should be used according to the scheme prescribed by the attending physician. The drug is used from the 14th-16th day of the menstrual cycle to the 25th. 200-300 mg divided into 2 doses is enough, an interval of 12 hours should be observed between them. The duration of treatment depends on the patient's condition, usually it is 2-6 cycles. It cannot be used for uterine bleeding of an unclear nature and in the presence of a tendency to form blood clots. May lead to intermenstrual bleeding.
- Tamoxifen. Widely used as an antitumor agent. It is used 2-3 times a day, 20-30 mg on certain days of the menstrual cycle. The drug cannot be used during pregnancy. It can cause side effects in the form of gastrointestinal disorders and skin rash.
- Fareston. The drug is widely used to prevent cancer. The average dosage is 20 mg 3 times a day, the attending physician prescribes a detailed regimen. The drug should not be used in case of bradycardia and water-salt imbalance. It can lead to the development of nausea, vomiting, pulmonary embolism.
- Yarina. The drug is used one tablet per day according to the prescribed scheme. Usually, the duration of administration is 21 days. Use the drug until the desired therapeutic effect is achieved. The drug should not be taken during pregnancy or suspected of it, with a tendency to thrombosis and the presence of bleeding of unknown genesis. May cause gastrointestinal disorders, contribute to weight gain.
- Regulon. The principle of action of the hormonal contraceptive is similar to Yarina. Take the drug one tablet for 21 days. The attending physician prescribes a detailed scheme. The drug cannot be used in case of herpes, bleeding of unknown genesis, thrombosis and epilepsy. It can lead to the development of vomiting, depression, provoke weight gain.
- Zhanin. The product is used daily for 21 days, one tablet at a time, according to the prescribed scheme. It cannot be used in case of thrombosis, pancreatitis, vaginal bleeding and during breastfeeding. It can cause soreness of the mammary glands, nausea, vomiting, weight gain.
- Ketorol. The drug is used once. If the condition is severe, the drug is used again, the maximum daily dosage is 4 tablets. The drug should not be taken by people under 16 years of age, in the presence of bronchospasm, peptic ulcer, renal and hepatic insufficiency. Causes gastrointestinal disorders, leads to the development of allergic reactions.
- Diclofenac. The drug is taken in a dose of 1-2 tablets per day. If necessary, the dosage is adjusted. The duration of treatment is prescribed by a doctor. It cannot be used in case of hypersensitivity, during pregnancy and in case of abnormalities in the liver and kidneys. May cause gastrointestinal upset.
- Furosemide. The drug is taken once a day in the morning. If necessary, the daily dose is increased. The drug should not be taken in the first trimester of pregnancy, in case of hypersensitivity and mechanical obstruction of the urinary tract. It can lead to the development of hyperemia, nausea, intestinal disorder.
- Triamterene. Used alone or in combination with other diuretics. 0.05 mg 1-2 times a day is sufficient. Not recommended for use in acute renal failure, pregnancy and high potassium levels in the blood. May cause uric acid retention.
Folk remedies
The most popular way to eliminate the compaction is to use herbs and improvised means. Folk treatment is aimed at resolving the formation, in addition, it has an anti-inflammatory effect. The best of their kind are cabbage and burdock. They perfectly improve blood flow, help eliminate pain syndrome and accelerate healing.
- Cabbage. You need to take one head of cabbage and remove several leaves from it. They are applied to the chest and secured with clothing. You will have to walk around with a cabbage leaf for about 40 minutes, during which time it will warm up and soften. You can pre-mash it with boiling water and then apply it to the affected area. In this case, the remedy is left on the chest for the whole night.
- Burdock. This plant has always been valued for its healing properties. Simply cut a burdock leaf and apply it to the affected area. The principle of application is similar to cabbage. You can use dry burdock, but in this case you will have to make a tincture from it. The main ingredient is mixed with baked milk in a 1:1 ratio. The resulting product is applied to the mammary glands.

Herbal treatment
Celandine has proven itself since ancient times. This plant can be used in any form, because it is truly universal. Celandine juice or gruel is mixed with vegetable oil and applied to the affected area. During preparation, it is necessary to adhere to the proportion of 1:2. To improve the result, the mammary gland must be wrapped in film and wrapped. The product is left on overnight. This herbal treatment has proven its effectiveness, however, celandine is not the only way to get rid of breast growths.
Red brush herb helps regulate the thyroid gland and eliminate tumors. Burdock roots have anti-cancer and anti-tumor effects. Simply brew them like tea. A mixture of yarrow, string and motherwort will help cope with mastopathy. Just take 2 tablespoons of each ingredient and pour a liter of boiling water. The resulting tincture is consumed one glass per day.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicines are taken for a long time. Their effectiveness lies in their unique composition. All medications include only natural components. Such treatment may not be suitable for everyone, despite its universal recognition. Homeopathy requires certain indications, it cannot be used independently.
Homeopathic remedies are indeed effective, but they have not undergone any clinical trials. Therefore, it is inappropriate to exclude the possibility of side effects. Homeopathy can help cope with neoplasms, but not with all of them. Thus, only benign tumors are susceptible to its influence. In the case of fibroadenoma, it will not have any effect.
You can get acquainted with existing drugs and choose a truly high-quality treatment at a homeopathic doctor's appointment. Today, there are many specialized drugs. These include: Arnica, Belladonna, Bryonia, Conium and many other medications.
Surgical treatment
Surgical intervention is not required in all cases. Cysts and fibroadenomas must be removed. There are special indications for surgical treatment. It is used for tumors whose size is rapidly increasing. Surgical intervention is advisable for tumors larger than 5 cm if there is a suspicion of oncology. It is advisable to remove the tumor when planning a pregnancy. It can cause blockage of the milk ducts and lead to the development of an inflammatory process.
The cyst is removed by puncturing and sucking out its contents. The walls of the empty neoplasm are glued together, which prevents its re-formation. The obtained fluid is sent for cytological examination. If the cyst is not removed, there is a risk of infection and suppuration.
Fibroadenoma also requires removal, which can be done in two ways. The first option involves removing one tumor. The second type of surgery is the removal of the neoplasm along with the mammary gland.
The operation lasts no more than 2 hours. After its completion, the patient is transferred to the hospital. The stitches are removed after 7-10 days.
Prevention
First of all, it is necessary to eliminate any inflammatory processes in the genitals. After all, in most cases, they lead to the development of neoplasms in the breast. Breast skin requires special care. Constant examination, palpation, and the use of special means are the basis of prevention.
Abortions have a detrimental effect on the breast. Fertilization entails a restructuring of the entire body. An interrupted pregnancy requires long-term stabilization of the woman's condition. In some cases, this leads to the development of a tumor.
It is known that women who give birth after 30 suffer from pathological neoplasms in the mammary glands much more often. Oral contraceptives in large quantities before the first pregnancy can provoke tumor growth.
It is necessary to avoid trauma to the breast, this can lead to the development of a neoplasm. The skin of the breast should be protected from direct sunlight. This will help maintain its elasticity and prevent the development of stretch marks. Finally, if strange symptoms are detected, it is necessary to go to a mammologist for a consultation. Early diagnosis of the disease increases the likelihood of a favorable outcome.
Forecast
If you do not ignore the appearance of a lump and start treatment in time, everything will end well. Unfortunately, the prognosis does not depend on the set of measures taken, but directly on the person himself. Many people ignore the symptoms and do not rush to see a doctor. In doing so, they themselves reduce their own chances of a quick and successful recovery.
If you suspect breast cancer, you should not hesitate under any circumstances. Timely diagnosis and use of all necessary measures will increase a woman's chances for a healthy and long life. In the later stages, metastases develop, which reduces the likelihood of recovery.
If it is a benign neoplasm, it also needs to be treated. The sooner the process of removing the compaction begins, the better the result. In advanced cases, it will not be possible to cope with it with medications, the tumor will have to be removed, possibly together with the mammary gland. It is not worth taking risks, it is necessary to start treatment on time.
