Preparing teeth for prosthetics
Preparation of teeth for prosthetics begins with treatment of all teeth. The therapist cleans your teeth from tartar and plaque and treats caries.
After this, surgical preparation of the supporting teeth begins. The supporting teeth take the weight of the prosthesis. They are prepared for the crown. The nerve from the tooth canal does not need to be removed in all cases.
Dental prosthetics under general anesthesia
Dental prosthetics under general anesthesia is necessary if you still have a panic fear of the dentist. It is precisely such patients, due to the fact that their teeth have been neglected, who most often need prosthetics.
But there are other cases. There are special categories of patients who need general anesthesia even for dental treatment. Who are they?
- Patients with cardiovascular diseases.
- People who are allergic to all (and this happens!) local anesthetics.
- People with severe immune problems.
People who know about their problems should undergo examination by a cardiologist, allergist, immunologist, and endocrinologist before undergoing dental treatment.
Of course, not every clinic has special equipment and an anesthesiologist. After anesthesia, you will be able to walk independently in an hour.
General anesthesia makes the dentist's job easier and reduces salivation. Which also makes it preferable in difficult cases.
Which dental prosthetics are better?
It is difficult to give a clear answer to the question of which dental prosthetics is better. Before deciding on dental prosthetics using one of the methods available today, let's figure out what types of prosthetics there are and their prices.
Prices for prosthetics in Kyiv vary greatly. There are about 2,000 dental clinics and offices in the city with different levels of service, equipment, different qualifications of personnel and pricing.
A dental prosthetist can determine which dental prosthetics are best for you. You should not rely only on the flattering reviews of your friends without the advice of a doctor.
Modern dental prosthetics
Modern dental prosthetics is their second life. Today, a crown can give you the same sensations as your own tooth. Everything is determined by the accuracy and skill of the doctor. A doctor with golden hands is the most important thing, not the name of the clinic. Prosthetics combines science and creativity. Modern technologies return a smile with the complete loss of all teeth. This is the result of the work of a gnathologist, therapist, orthopedist and orthodontist.
It may be hard for you to imagine, but back pain, headaches, and stomach problems can be associated with missing teeth.
If you have had a crown, bridge or dental implant placed and you feel discomfort, it means something was done wrong.
How do you know if the clinic you've chosen uses a modern approach?
Before prosthetics, a jaw x-ray is taken. A good clinic will keep your teeth alive. Making a permanent crown today takes from several hours to one day.
In expensive clinics, a computer comes to the aid of the dentist. The computer model is used to plan the places where the implants will be installed.
Stages of dental prosthetics
The following stages of dental prosthetics are distinguished:
- Examination of the oral cavity by a therapist.
- Treatment of carious teeth.
- Surgical preparation for prosthesis installation.
- Manufacturing of a prosthesis.
- Prosthetics itself.
Aesthetic dental prosthetics
Aesthetic dental prosthetics restores the natural beauty of a smile and restores normal chewing. Crowns and inlays are used in the prosthetics process.
The dentist-therapist and hygienist prepare the patient for the procedure in a quality manner. Modern dentistry is aimed at preserving natural teeth. And they will not depulp and grind them down without necessity.
A metal-ceramic crown consists of a metal frame and ceramics applied to it. Metal-ceramics are ideal for lower teeth.
A zirconium dioxide crown is close to the tissues of the tooth. Another advantage of ceramic crowns is the lack of need to grind down teeth.

Types of dental prosthetics
Today there are the following types of dental prosthetics:
- Removable dental prosthetics. Removable dentures are quite convenient for their price. The level of aesthetics of removable dentures has increased over the past 20 years. Of their disadvantages, perhaps, only the need for cleaning.
- Fixed prosthetics are optimal for young patients. In case of tooth loss, this method effectively and inexpensively restores a smile.
- Metal-ceramic crowns are a relatively inexpensive type of prosthetics at a low price. The disadvantage of this type of prosthetics is the need to grind and depulp the tooth.
- Microprosthetics is the restoration of a tooth using inlays and onlays. Tooth onlays are called veneers.
- "Bridges" - prostheses that rest on adjacent teeth. Still popular.
Each type of prosthesis has its own durability parameters.
Fixed dental prosthetics
Fixed dental prosthetics have a number of advantages over removable dentures:
- High aesthetics.
- Easy to care for.
Previously, unaesthetic metal crowns were popular, but they are a thing of the past. They have been replaced by new materials: reliable and durable (15-20 years of service) metal ceramics, metal-free ceramics, indistinguishable from natural teeth, zirconium-based prostheses.
A bridge prosthesis allows for complete restoration of chewing function. The bridge is supported by adjacent teeth.
The most modern type of prosthetics is replacing a tooth with an implant. It is screwed onto a titanium screw, which is implanted into the bone. This is already an extensive surgical intervention and it is not cheap. But such structures serve for 20-25 years and have the same biomechanics as natural teeth. Patients do not distinguish them from their own teeth, and those around them - even less so.

Removable dental prosthetics
Removable dental prosthetics includes nylon removable dentures and clasp dentures.
Removable dentures are used as an alternative to implantation.
Clasp dentures are attached using locks or hooks.
The nylon prosthesis is easy to manufacture and use. The patient gets used to it very quickly. The design is very durable.
Covering dental prosthetics
Covering dental prosthetics is used in cases of crown fracture, in cases where it is necessary to amputate the crown part of the tooth, or in cases of tooth wear.
The covering prosthesis reduces the pressure on the oral mucosa.
Contraindications to covering prosthetics:
- Diabetes mellitus.
- Pathologies of the nervous system.
Indications for installation of covering dentures:
- Atrophy of the alveolar processes.
- Atrophy of the jaw bone.
Dental prosthetics in the absence of teeth
Dental prosthetics in the absence of teeth is a difficult problem to solve, because there is no support for the prosthesis due to their absence.
Removable prosthetics or implantation will help solve the problem. With removable prosthetics, a prosthesis is made that imitates the upper or lower jaw with all the teeth.
When implanting, a prosthesis is placed on the artificial root. Complete replacement of all teeth with implants will take about a year.
Contraindications to implantation:
- Closely located maxillary sinus.
- Low amount of bone tissue.
But even in this case there is a way out - a bridge on implants, when a bridge prosthesis is attached to artificial teeth.
In case of significant bone tissue deficiency, mini-implants are used. They are four times smaller than usual. General anesthesia and stitches are not required when installing mini-implants. The only obstacles may be diabetes and alcoholism, heavy smoking.
Dental prosthetics with pins
Dental prosthetics with pins is carried out as follows: an anchor pin is inserted into the canal to strengthen the tooth that has been deprived of a nerve. Pins made of palladium, brass or titanium are used. After this, the restoration can be done with a ceramic inlay or a crown can be placed on this tooth.
Dental prosthetics with inlays
Dental prosthetics with inlays – is performed when filling can no longer return the tooth to its previous functionality. The inlay is installed in two visits. First, an impression is taken from the carious cavity, and during the second visit, an inlay made in a dental laboratory is placed in the tooth, having previously “tried it on” and corrected any defects, if any. The material for the inlay is usually porcelain.
Dental prosthetics without grinding
Dental prosthetics without grinding helps to save the teeth adjacent to the lost one. This problem can be solved with the help of implantation – a reliable way to restore the dentition. The operation to implant a tooth takes 50 minutes. The service life of implants can reach 30 years.
The second option for solving the problem is clasp prosthetics. Channels are made in the walls of adjacent teeth that hold the bridge prosthesis.
Adhesive bridges are fixed with a special glue.
Materials for dental prosthetics
There are a wide variety of materials for dental prosthetics – choose together with your dentist.
Situation: one tooth is lost. What can the doctor offer you? Optimally – a fixed prosthesis or microprosthetics with inlays.
If a tooth is crumbling at the edges, it is better to put a crown on it. A metal-ceramic crown holds up well and does not irritate the gums, which is so feared by those who have problems with gums and put off prosthetics.
The dentist will recreate the tooth’s previous appearance, transparency and color.
If you have lost all your teeth, don't be upset! Today, nylon is used to make removable dentures - a very elastic, durable material.
Cement for dental prosthetics
Dental prosthetic cement is used to fix crowns and bridges. They are safe for tissues. When installing a crown, the teeth are ground down, the crown is filled with cement and fixed to the tooth.
An alternative to cement is composites. In this case, recesses are created on the teeth, into which inlays are inserted.

Dental prosthetics with gold
Gold dental prosthetics has its advantages. Gold protects teeth from caries. Wearing gold crowns slows down tooth decay by 50%. Gold is an excellent biocompatible material. Gold crowns do not cause problems with gums, allergies, do not rub, and can be perfectly adjusted to the bite.
There are two types of gold crowns used: metal with a coating and metal-free, completely made of gold.
Gold and enamel wear off at the same rate. On chewing teeth, this is the ideal option.
Dental prosthetics with metal-plastic
Dental prosthetics with metal-plastic is a cheaper method than using metal-ceramics. Plastic is porous, fragile, unaesthetic and toxic. Therefore, it is used as a temporary prosthesis. A temporary prosthesis can last 1-2 years and will protect your teeth from shifting. Metal-plastic crowns are made quickly and easily. Their installation is non-traumatic. The average cost of one metal-plastic crown is 600 UAH.
Dental prosthetics with metal ceramics
Metal-ceramic dental prosthetics is an aesthetic, durable way to restore a tooth. But it has a drawback - a significant part of the tooth has to be ground down.
Metal-ceramic prostheses cost half as much as implants and last 15 years.
To make the crown last longer, it is better not to eat very hard foods, as this will cause the ceramic part to chip off.
Clasp dental prosthetics
Clasp dentures are a type of prosthetics in which the denture is attached to a metal frame. A clasp denture is an alternative to removable dentures ("false jaws"). They have better aesthetics. Clasp dentures are invisible to others. Today, clasp dentures are used in many cases when several teeth in a row are missing in the oral cavity, and it is impossible to install bridges. The alloy for a clasp denture is very light. The metal arch transfers the load during chewing to the supporting teeth. This distribution of load is closer to natural. The clasp partially covers the palate - this is the only drawback of clasp dentures.
Advantages of clasp prosthetics:
- No grinding of teeth is required during installation.
- The design of the prosthesis is very light.
- The clasp denture is easily removed.
- Maintenance: simple rinsing with water.
The denture can be attached with clasps or locks. Clasps are hooks that are firmly attached to the supporting teeth. The disadvantage of this design is that the hooks are visible when talking.
A clasp denture with locks allows you to get rid of these noticeable hooks that attract attention. The disadvantage of this method is the high cost of the structure.
Prosthetics of anterior teeth
From the point of view of durability and aesthetics, it is most rational to perform prosthetics of the front teeth using metal-ceramic and ceramic crowns.
Advantages of metal ceramics:
- Good aesthetics.
- Long service life – up to 15 years.
Flaws:
- Severe tooth grinding and depulpation.
- Bluish discoloration of the marginal gingiva.
- The crown is slightly noticeable compared to your other teeth.
There are several types of metal-free ceramics. Porcelain and aluminum oxide, zirconium dioxide are used. Teeth based on metal-free ceramics do not darken and retain their natural shine.
The cost of one unit of metal ceramics is about 1000 UAH, metal-free ceramics - 2000 UAH.
It is also possible to restore the front teeth with veneers and to restore them with fillings. The choice of restoration method depends primarily on how much the tooth is destroyed.
Prosthetics of lower teeth
Prosthetics of lower teeth has its own peculiarities due to the fact that the lower jaw is mobile, unlike the upper one. We use the lower jaw not only for chewing, but also for speaking and swallowing. Incorrect prosthetics can affect your pronunciation and your appearance.
A complete removable denture is additionally attached to the lower jaw with glue. There are no problems with the installation of partially removable dentures, which rest on both the gums and the remaining teeth.
It is also possible to replace lower teeth with fixed dentures made of metal-ceramics, metal-free ceramics, zirconium dioxide, bridge dentures and veneers.
Free dental prosthetics
Free dental prosthetics for pensioners has become a task for our state, because having all the teeth in their places is not a luxury. Health can suffer because of missing teeth. Judge for yourself - no tooth means food is poorly chewed, the stomach suffers. Periodontosis is involved.
To get free dental prosthetics, you need to contact the social welfare authorities. War and labor veterans and disabled people have the right to free prosthetics. Liquidators of the Chernobyl accident have the opportunity to install prosthetics for half the cost.
Dental prosthetics for periodontal disease
Dental prosthetics for periodontosis is a common cause of "headache" for orthopedic dentists. Periodontosis often causes tooth loss, and it all starts with slight bleeding of the gums. The cause of periodontosis is heredity and malocclusion. Before prosthetics, periodontosis must be treated. The dentist fixes loose teeth.
Prosthetics for patients with periodontosis is a complex procedure. First, restore the gum tissue.
Dental prosthetics for diabetes
Dental prosthetics for diabetes are needed quite often, because this disease also affects the teeth. A patient with diabetes needs to monitor the condition of the gums. Hygienic cleaning of teeth is necessary for such people once every three months.
Today, patients with diabetes undergo dental implantation, but not all clinics undertake this, given the anamnesis, and if diabetes is in an active, uncontrolled phase, this may become an absolute contraindication. A more gentle method is the installation of bridges with grinding of adjacent teeth. In recent years, bridges have become possible to install without grinding, but this method is more expensive. In our opinion, the installation of a bridge with the manufacture of inlays on adjacent teeth, although it requires additional costs, is an ideal way to solve the problem for patients with diabetes.
Prosthetics of milk teeth in children
Prosthetics of baby teeth in children - why is it necessary? Indeed, the time will come, and the teeth will be replaced by permanent ones. If you think so, then we can convince you otherwise. Prosthetics of baby teeth is necessary if for some reason, usually an injury, it was lost. If this happened before the natural change of teeth from 6 to 14 years, the dental row begins to deform, the teeth move, diction is impaired.
Dentures for children are made of plastic. Their service life is about a year, since the jaw grows. An orthodontist deals with problems of children's prosthetics. Of course, your child is a fidget, it is difficult to explain to him the need for treatment, but believe me, your decision to have a prosthetic for a baby tooth when it is lost will help to avoid many problems with the bite in the future.
Orthodontic plates with teeth hold the place in the dental row.
Metal crowns can also be installed for children. Indications for the use of metal crowns:
- Restoration of milk molars after pulpitis treatment.
- Restoration of teeth with congenital defects.
- Restoration of teeth after injury.
Complications in dental prosthetics
Complications during dental prosthetics occur if the doctor made a mistake. The most common complications are:
- Denture stomatitis – occurs when the denture presses on the gum, fits too tightly to it. Over time, blood vessels become pinched, which leads to bedsores. The problem is solved by rinsing with antiseptics.
- Caries of supporting teeth. Food debris accumulates under the denture and caries develops. To avoid its development, you need to pay close attention to hygiene, carefully care for the dentures, and clean them in the morning and evening.
- Sometimes it is possible for a bridge prosthesis to become detached or loose due to a change in bite.
- An allergy that develops when the material the prosthesis is made of comes into contact with the body's protein tissues. Symptoms of an allergy include skin rashes, asthma attacks, and dry mouth. Only replacing the prosthesis can help.
- Galvanic syndrome is an unpleasant condition that occurs due to the presence of dissimilar metals in the mouth. Saliva acts as an electrolyte into which the metal gets, and a galvanic current is formed. The patient feels a metallic taste in the mouth, headaches and malaise. This condition requires replacing the denture with another one made of a different metal.
Where to get dental prosthetics?
You can get dental prosthetics for free or at a paid department of your local clinic, go to a specialized dental clinic, a private dental office or a dental clinic - the choice is yours and depends, first of all, on your financial capabilities and the availability of doctors you trust. The clinic itself is not so important, but those who work there. You should not choose a clinic just because it has a name and its ads are regularly shown on TV. Contact those who have already had dental prosthetics.
If you have enough money, you can get treatment abroad. Abroad, in Germany, Israel and other countries, there are clinics with fully Russian support. You can inquire in Kyiv which organizations will help you organize your trip. Prices in foreign clinics vary greatly. In some of them, they are not much higher than ours with much higher quality. Thus, you overpay only for the flight and hotel accommodation.
Dental prosthetics at home
Many private clinics provide home dental prosthetics for elderly people. A dentist and a dental technician come to the home of people who cannot visit the clinic themselves.
The first stage involves consultation and taking impressions. The second stage involves trying on the finished prostheses. The clinic makes adjustments to them. And the third stage involves installing them.
One visit takes up to 2 hours.
Prices for dental prosthetics
Prices for dental prosthetics depend on the type of prosthetics and the specific clinic, as well as the material. For example, the most expensive prosthetics are ceramic veneers. The cheapest are acrylic removable dentures. The price of nylon dental prosthetics is higher. Acrylic prosthetics are adjusted to the patient's characteristics by stretching. They last for a couple of years.
The most expensive is dental implantation. Dental implantation is universal. You can insert one, several teeth or all teeth at once into the jaw. Expensive implants cost up to 25 years.
Possible additional costs for dental prosthetics are associated with preparing teeth for prosthetics, treating caries and periodontal disease.
Reviews of dental prosthetics
Reviews of prosthetics from those who can share their experience of treatment are the best recommendation. Only the owner of prosthetics can tell whether they are comfortable to wear or not.
Dental prosthetics is painless and solves dental problems for a long time. Today, Kyiv clinics use modern methods of dental prosthetics. Diagnostics before prosthetics is carried out using computer technology. Modern materials for the manufacture of prosthetics do not have a toxic effect on the body. Dental prosthetics will return your smile to you - smile to your health.
