Pathogenic ulcers in the mouth (on the cheeks, lips, palate or gums) are the first signs of such an unpleasant disease as stomatitis. It cannot be said that it is impossible to avoid it. Whatever the cause of the disease: an unhealthy lifestyle, weakened immunity or microtraumas of the mucous membrane, the risk of its occurrence can be reduced by preventing stomatitis.
What causes stomatitis?
In order to properly prevent stomatitis, it is necessary to understand the reasons for its occurrence, and there are more than enough of them:
- Weakened body (stress, vitamin deficiency, weakened immunity, hormonal imbalances).
- Microtraumas of the oral cavity.
- Associated problems and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, tumors, metabolic disorders.
- Viral diseases.
- Failure to comply with personal hygiene rules.
- Unhealthy lifestyle and bad habits.
- Advanced dental problems.
- Uncomfortable dentures or sharp edges of teeth.
Whatever the reasons, and whoever suffers from mouth ulcers – an adult or a child – stomatitis prevention is the main measure on the path to treating the disease. It is aimed primarily at careful oral hygiene and attentive attitude to one’s own health.
Prevention of stomatitis in adults
- Most often, stomatitis in adults is caused by neglected oral problems. Therefore, first of all, visit a dentist every six months. The best prevention of stomatitis in this case is timely dental treatment.
- Pay attention to how you feel after treatment at the dentist - stomatitis can be caused by sharp corners of teeth or fillings and uncomfortable dentures that rub the gums.
- An important point in the prevention of stomatitis is a balanced diet. In order to avoid vitamin deficiency, you should include proteins, complex carbohydrates and fats in your diet, and also take a course of vitamins every three to five months. In addition, stomatitis can occur with food allergies, so pay attention to what foods cause painful ulcers in your mouth.
- Avoid nervous tension and stress.
- Avoid injury to the oral mucosa.
- Do not forget that the most important rule for preventing stomatitis is to follow basic rules of personal hygiene: daily brushing of teeth, rinsing with solutions without added alcohol and sodium lauryl sulfate, and using dental floss.
- If stomatitis is caused by other diseases (lesions of the ENT organs, gastrointestinal tract, liver), you need to contact your doctor and, in addition to following the rules of prevention, eliminate the underlying cause of the disease.
Prevention of stomatitis in children
Unfortunately, stomatitis in children is a common occurrence. That is why parents should pay special attention to its prevention.
The golden rule for preventing stomatitis in children is careful hygiene of the oral cavity and the area where the child is located.
- Periodically use quartz lamps and always ventilate the children's room.
- Wash toys thoroughly in soapy water and do not allow them to enter your mouth if they fall on the ground.
- The child should have his own dishes, toothbrush and towel.
- Mothers of infants need to remember about breast hygiene – it should always be clean.
- If someone close to you is sick with herpes or stomatitis, it is better to limit the baby’s contact with him or her.
- For older children, the main principle of stomatitis prevention is getting used to personal hygiene: washing hands after being outside and using the toilet, brushing teeth. You also need to wean the child off putting foreign objects and hands in their mouth.
- As with adults, children need a balanced diet, vitamin complexes (only on doctor’s recommendation!) and immune support to prevent stomatitis.
Those who have experienced the "delights" of stomatitis once will most likely encounter the disease more than once. But following the basic principles of stomatitis prevention will provide you with almost 100% protection from painful mouth ulcers!
