The nail (unguis) is a horny plate that is located in the connective tissue nail bed, from where the nail grows.
A distinction is made between the root of the nail (radix unguis), which lies in the nail cleft, the body of the nail (corpus ungius), and the free edge (margo liber), which protrudes beyond the nail bed. The skin folds that limit the nail from the side of its root and from the sides are called the nail fold (vallum unguis).
