Knee injury is often seen in patients with rheumatological diseases (primarily rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis). The use of such immobilizing devices as the knee joint orthosis (bandage, knee) in the acute phase of arthritis helps to reduce pain syndromes and local signs of inflammation, and prevent flexion contractures.
The defeat of knee ligaments leads to its dynamic instability and, as a consequence, to a general decrease in functional ability. In this case, it is very advisable to apply the orthosis of the knee joint.
In recent years, the so-called valgizing and varistating fixing apparatuses operating according to the principle of "three points" have become widespread. They are intended for the discharge of the medial or lateral condyles of the tibia with appropriate forms of gonarthrosis.
Stage orthotics gives positive results in the treatment of flexion contractures (especially in children).
Special place and clinical practice is occupied by special dynamic fixing devices. They allow you to dose-limit the amount of movement. They are used in the rehabilitation period of arthroplasty operations.
What is the use of the knee joint orthosis?
For static orthoses of knee joints - to ensure peace of the inflamed organ in the optimal position, for dynamic - to reduce pain and improve the function of the joint structures.
Punctuation
Arthritis and arthrosis of the knee; knee instability due to lack of lateral and cruciate ligaments; damage to the meniscus; instability of the patella; stage development of joint structures after arthroplasty operations.
Contraindications
Violation of the circulation of the lower extremities (absolute contraindication of thrombophlebitis of the deep veins of the lower limbs). In the initial stages of varicose veins, the use of orthoses of knee joints is possible in conjunction with anti-varicose products.
Methods and subsequent care
Prior to the appointment of fixation devices, an angiosurgeon or phlebologist must be consulted (to assess the condition of the vessels of the lower limbs).
Depending on the degree of rigidity of the construction, several types can be distinguished: soft-elastic bandages without lateral ribs of rigidity: soft-elastic with lateral ribs of rigidity; Orthoses of knee joints with lateral unregulated hinges and apparatuses on the knee with lateral adjustable hinges. Most fixing devices and bandages are made serially. Apparatus on the knee - usually individually.
Effect. When using the device, patients are more stable during walking (including proprioceptive mechanisms). Because of the stabilization and unloading of the knee, the pain syndrome is reduced.
Factors affecting efficiency
An important parameter is the accuracy of selection and convenience in use. Valving and brewing apparatus are effective in unstable, unstable, corresponding shin settings up to 10-15 °. However, difficulties in putting on and taking off, cumbersomeness and low aesthetic characteristics often lead to patients refusing to use them.
Complications
Sometimes with excessive compression of soft tissues (incorrectly sized), blood flow disorders in the orthesized limb may occur.
If the knee joint orthosis is ineffective, surgical treatment is used.
