Itchy eyes are a problem of the last decade. It has become quite common, so you should not try to treat it at home. After all, there can be many diseases associated with such an unpleasant symptom. You will not be able to cure this problem on your own. Only a qualified ophthalmologist can help in such a situation.
Eyes can itch for a number of reasons. Among them are environmental factors and endocrine disorders. That is why it is impossible to independently understand why unpleasant sensations arose.
Causes of itchy eyes
The main causes of itchy eyes can be hidden behind many negative factors. Moreover, everything is accompanied by certain symptoms. Therefore, it is impossible to understand what happened on your own.
So, the cause of this symptom may be an allergic reaction. This concerns the flowering of some plants. Contamination of the face often leads to an unpleasant burning sensation. Therefore, it is recommended to wash your eyes more often. Otherwise, the fat that is secreted from the sebaceous glands along with sweat will cause unpleasant sensations.
Getting foreign objects and even insects into the eyes can cause itching. In this case, you should not scratch the eye, especially with dirty hands. Only running water will help here. If you don’t have it at hand, then you should use a handkerchief and remove the insect or foreign object. It is necessary to drive the “foreign body” into the corner of the eye and then remove it.
Gases and other corrosive liquids can damage the organs of vision. It is important to rinse the eyes immediately. Do not pull under any circumstances.
The cause of redness may be a disease called trichiasis. It is quite common. It is not so difficult to notice, eyelashes begin to grow in the wrong direction. Therefore, the eyelids cannot close completely, which leads to incomplete protection of the eye from the environment.
Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye. The most common disease that causes itching in the eyes. As a result, the inner part of the eyelid is covered with a thin film. When this organ is inflamed, the blood vessels dilate. Therefore, the eyes begin to redden, itch, and a large amount of tears are secreted.
Dry eye syndrome occurs due to a lack of sebum secretion, which is able to protect the tear film from evaporation. This problem is often encountered in the process of human aging. It often occurs due to air conditioning, cigarette smoke, dry and hot climate, wearing contact lenses, etc.
Symptoms of Itchy Eyes
Depending on the disease, specific symptoms of itching in the eyes appear. Basically, this is redness of the eyelids and whites. This phenomenon is caused by an allergic reaction or an eye disease.
Often, sticky discharge appears, which turns into a crust when it dries. It causes itching and even pain. This complicates the problem many times. Redness and discomfort in the eyes appear mainly in the morning or closer to evening.
Conjunctivitis manifests itself as swelling and redness of the eyelids. In addition, there are mucous or purulent discharge, burning and increased lacrimation. The presence of certain symptoms depends on a particular type of pathology.
The well-known stye manifests itself in the form of itching and swelling of the edge of the eyelid. There are also painful sensations when touched. There may be lacrimation, fever, general malaise and headache.
It is worth repeating that much depends on the disease itself, which can only be diagnosed by a doctor. Therefore, when the main symptoms appear, namely: burning in the eyes and pain, you should immediately seek help.
Redness and itching in the eyes
Often, redness and itching in the eyes indicate serious problems with the organs of vision. The most common of them is conjunctivitis. In this case, one or both eyes become red, itching occurs. In addition, there is clouding, as well as increased sensitivity to light. It seems to a person that sand has been poured into his eyes. This is quite common. During sleep, crusty discharge may occur.
All this suggests that the patient suffers from inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye. This is a viral disease that occurs on the inner surface of the eyelid and the eyeball membrane. The eyes begin to redden, tears flow.
There is also allergic conjunctivitis, it affects not one, but both eyes. It often occurs under the influence of allergens from the environment. Infections also affect its development. In addition to redness, there is a burning sensation, and sometimes a runny nose is present. Perhaps this is the most common problem of eye problems.
Redness and itching are caused by foreign objects getting into the mucous membrane, flowering plants, chemical exposure, and improper hygiene. Therefore, it is necessary to take preventive measures.
Itching around the eyes
Often, itching around the eyes is a blepharitis syndrome. Sometimes it indicates that an eye mite has appeared, which is often found as a saprophyte on the eyebrows and eyelashes.
Eyes can also start itching due to an allergic reaction to the flowering of a plant. This is quite normal, but it needs to be dealt with. Often people simply rub their eyes due to overexertion. But if the organ of vision is subject to constant irritation, then this symptom will be observed everywhere. This phenomenon is often associated with lesions of the eyelids and skin around the eye. This can also happen due to a wound located on the skin. After all, during healing, substances are actively produced that provoke this process.
Often this phenomenon is accompanied by abundant lacrimation. In this case, it is necessary to observe other symptoms. After all, most likely we are talking about some disease. A visit to an ophthalmologist is mandatory. Because this symptom can be a harbinger of ulcerative damage to the cornea, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye and glaucoma.
Itchy eyelids
Hyperemia is another reason during which itching of the eyelids appears. Often this disease occurs from irritation by dust, washing powders, animal hair and chemical suspensions.
This phenomenon can appear against the background of inflammation, the presence of viruses, bacteria and allergies. In this case, everything is accompanied by redness and swelling. If itching is observed in the corners of the eyes, then most likely we are talking about conjunctivitis.
Swollen and itchy eyelids may be caused by an allergic reaction of the body. In this case, it is necessary to undergo an examination and identify what the allergen is. During such a reaction, nasal congestion, watery eyes, and a runny nose appear.
This symptom may be caused by a reaction to food products. They are the ones that can cause irritation. For example, after eating chocolate, some people may feel the urge to scratch their eyelids.
In women, it is often caused by a reaction to cosmetics. If it is not of sufficient quality and contains prohibited substances, then this is a completely standard phenomenon.
Wearing contact lenses can cause a number of unpleasant sensations, but only at the very beginning of their use. Dry eye syndrome and computer syndrome may appear. Some diseases, such as diabetes, cause the same symptom.
Itching under the eyes
What can cause itching under the eyes and how to avoid it? Healing injuries, allergic pathological conditions, barley, blepharitis, keratitis, demodicosis and conjunctivitis cause such a reaction.
Healing of wounds, especially after a surgical reaction, often leads to itching. In this case, the process occurs in which the body gets rid of dead tissue. This condition is quite normal, there is no need to worry about it.
This symptom can often indicate an allergic reaction. Allergens can be cosmetic products, plant pollen, house dust, poplar fluff and household chemicals. Such a reaction is accompanied by redness and swelling of the eye area and under it.
Inflammation of the eyelash margin often causes discomfort. Thus, the disease is characterized by abnormal growth of eyelashes, as a result of which the eyelids do not fully protect the eye from negative environmental factors.
There can be many reasons for inflammation of the area under the eyes. It is simply impossible to determine the cause on your own. In this case, you need to seek help from an ophthalmologist.
Swelling and itching in the eyes
In most cases, swelling and itching in the eyes develops against the background of taking medications. This can be caused by antibiotics, medications containing iodine and vitamin complexes.
Eyes can swell if the allergen is contained in a cosmetic product. This phenomenon often occurs in women. Swelling of the eyelids often occurs due to an insect bite. An experienced doctor can determine the cause of this phenomenon and prescribe a good antihistamine. Do not forget that swelling is also caused by diseases.
To avoid swelling, it is necessary to review your daily diet. Basically, this phenomenon appears due to the consumption of certain products. This can be chocolate, eggs, milk and seafood. Therefore, it is better to include berries in your daily diet. You will have to remove citrus fruits, strawberries, pomegranates and red apples. It is advisable to follow a special diet. But this is only if the swelling is caused by this condition.
Itching in the corner of the eye
This symptom does not appear just like that. This phenomenon is preceded by a number of reasons. Thus, these can be infectious diseases of the visual organs. The main reason for this symptom and other unpleasant sensations is infection. The fact is that bacteria irritate the mucous membrane and lead to swelling of the entire eye.
Allergy is another common cause of itching in the corner of the eye. This condition is not the most pleasant, because it is characterized by burning, profuse lacrimation and swelling of the mucous membranes.
Getting a foreign body or substance into the eye leads to similar symptoms. Many negative environmental factors can irritate the mucous membrane.
The most common disease that results in itching in the corner of the eye is inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye. It occurs when bacteria and infections get into the mucous membrane of the eye. The disease is accompanied not only by this symptom, but also by redness and purulent discharge.
Itching in the inner corner of the eye
Often, itching in the inner corner of the eye indicates that a person has an infectious disease. Because they manifest themselves in the organs of vision in this way. There is nothing terrible about this if you do not neglect this phenomenon. After all, diseases are different and all of them can develop into complicated forms.
You shouldn't rule out the most common allergy. Only in this case, the itching manifests itself not only in the inner corner of the eye, but also on the eyelids, as well as the mucous membrane. It is important to determine the cause of this phenomenon in time and begin to fight it.
The most common variant of development of irritation and burning in the eyes is conjunctivitis. At the initial stages, it does not particularly manifest itself. But if the disease is neglected, purulent discharge may appear. There are several types of inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye, these are viral, bacterial and allergic.
A viral disease manifests itself as profuse lacrimation, irritation, burning and damage to one eye. If treatment is not started in time, then soon all the symptoms are observed in the second eye. Bacterial conjunctivitis is characterized by purulent discharge, swelling, redness and irritation. Usually the disease affects one eye. Allergic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye manifests itself as pronounced swelling of the eyelids and lacrimation. It usually affects both eyes. In any case, each disease requires quality treatment.
Severe itching in the eyes
Often, severe itching in the eyes can be caused by a number of reasons. Thus, the most common of them are allergic reactions, the ingress of foreign objects, reactions to food products and cosmetics.
But these are the most harmless of all possible causes. Basically, severe itching is observed against the background of some disease. This symptom is characteristic of keratoconjunctivitis.
This disease manifests itself with lacrimation, photophobia, and viscous discharge. This infection affects both the conjunctiva of the eyelid and the eyeball. When the eyelid is affected, hard and tightly pressed growths may appear. Rather, it is something similar to a cobblestone pavement. This picture often occurs on the upper eyelids.
If we are talking about damage to the conjunctiva of the eyeball, then in this case the cornea becomes hypertrophied and has a grayish tint. Sometimes there is moderate damage to the corneal epithelium. This is why pain and photophobia occur.
When symptoms of these diseases begin to manifest themselves, it is necessary to seek help immediately.
Itching and flaking around the eyes
Itching and flaking around the eyes indicate that a person has demodicosis. This is a skin disease that occurs due to the defeat of the sebaceous glands by a mite. This phenomenon is localized not only around the eyes, but also on the shoulders, chest and back.
The manifestations of demodicosis are different, because much depends on the course of the disease and its localization. Often, the signs can be skin lesions, red rashes, etc. The main symptom is peeling. On the face, redness often appears around the eyes, on the eyelids, on the chin and in the corners of the lips. If these symptoms are detected, in no case should you begin self-treatment.
The disease often affects the eyes. As a result, the edges of the eyelids become red and swollen. The most characteristic symptom is peeling of the roots of the eyelashes along the edge of the eyelids, sticking of the eyelashes and plaque on the eyelids. In addition, patients often complain of discomfort after reading or working on the computer.
Therefore, as soon as the main signs are noticed, it is necessary to immediately seek help from a qualified doctor.
Allergic itching in the eyes
Basically, allergic itching in the eyes does not just happen. Small particles of dust or plants can irritate the mucous membrane and thus lead to the appearance of unpleasant symptoms. This is especially common in the spring, when everything begins to actively bloom.
Pet hair often causes irritation, and this is accompanied by watery eyes, stuffy nose and sneezing. Household chemicals are on the same level as other allergenic "ingredients". Moreover, nail polish and other cosmetics occupy leading positions. Even children's toys can cause allergies, because they can contain anything.
Diagnosis of the cause of such a phenomenon and treatment is carried out only by a doctor. It will not be possible to solve anything in this situation on your own. After all, it is not so easy to determine the source of the allergy. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to wash your eyes several times a day. This procedure is preventive.
Itching in the eyes and ears
If a person has itching in the eyes and ears, then the cause should be sought among parasitological diseases. This does not look like a common allergic reaction at all. Redness of the skin of the eyelids and eyes is an inflammatory process. It is not for nothing that during sleep a person develops a crust, sticky discharge and loss of eyelashes. All this suggests that this is blepharitis of demodectic etiology.
What is it? In this situation, we are talking about a disease that is characterized by the "works" of a microscopic mite. It easily penetrates into hair and sebaceous follicles. That is why itching in the eyes is accompanied by unpleasant sensations near the ears.
It should be noted that this tick is present in almost 80% of the population, it just does not manifest itself until a certain time. But as soon as problems with the immune system appear, it begins to negatively affect a person. You can check the skin of the eyes for this disease at an ophthalmologist. It is important not to delay solving the problem. The treatment is not at all complicated and takes place in 2 stages. First, the parasite is removed from the body, and then anti-inflammatory therapy is carried out.
Puffiness and itching under the eyes
Puffiness under the eyes and itching do not just happen, they are preceded by some unpleasant diseases and other reasons. So, basically bags or swelling appear as a result of sleep and wakefulness disorders. Often even insomnia stimulates the development of this process. Severe headache and stress can cause swelling.
Dry air can blow on the eyes and thus chap the skin around them. Abuse of certain products can also lead to these unpleasant symptoms. After all, itching is mainly caused by the presence of an allergen or an infectious disease. If all this is also accompanied by swelling, then it is necessary to take measures to solve the problem immediately.
There are also everyday reasons that contribute to the development of these phenomena. For example, food, dust and fluff can cause eye swelling. Fluid retention in the body often leads to bags. Especially if you drank a lot of it before bed. Even the menstrual cycle can provoke minor hormonal changes and swelling.
In any case, only a doctor can determine the true cause of this phenomenon. Therefore, if swelling appears, you should immediately seek help from a qualified specialist.
Dry and itchy eyes
Often these signs indicate that a person has dry eye syndrome. This phenomenon is accompanied by several symptoms. Thus, burning, photophobia, rapid fatigue and photophobia actively manifest themselves.
In addition, a slight reddening of the conjunctiva is noted. Sometimes crusts form in the corners of the eyes. Many people believe that this is a harmless phenomenon that appears after sleep. In fact, this is not all true. Dry eye syndrome is often observed in people with follicular conjunctivitis. In this situation, small tubercles-follicles can form.
If a person is often bothered by dry eyes, he can stimulate lacrimation on his own. But in this case there is a risk of microtrauma of the eyelids and the development of inflammation.
The feeling of dryness often increases in windy and sunny weather. Warm and humid air, on the contrary, is a favorable environment for the eyes. Unpleasant sensations at such times gradually decrease.
Sometimes, dry eyes can be replaced by tearfulness. This also causes a lot of inconvenience. Especially if we are talking about a girl who has applied makeup. In any case, it is necessary to fight this problem.

Itchy eyes and runny nose
Often, itchy eyes and a runny nose indicate the presence of some disease. During examination, the patient has reddened sclera and mucous membrane of the eye. Discharge may also appear. Initially, they are transparent, but after a while they become purulent. Often, the eyes are affected due to inflammatory changes.
Dark circles and swelling of the nasal mucosa may also manifest themselves. All this indicates the presence of an infectious disease. To get rid of these unpleasant phenomena, people begin to rub the tip of the nose with their palm from the bottom up. The fold that can form between the tip of the nose and the bridge of the nose is a characteristic sign of allergic rhinitis.
A person is bothered by a feeling of itching in the ears, throat and palate. This indicates that the patient has encountered allergic rhinitis or inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye. These two diseases especially affect the eyes, nose and ears. Therefore, it is not so easy to determine on your own what a person has.
It is necessary to pay attention to accompanying symptoms. Often, irritation and runny nose can appear due to a common allergy. In this situation, it is necessary to determine the main allergen and limit contact with it. Special measures must be taken.
Itchy eyes in a child
Children's organs of vision are susceptible to any unfavorable factors, so itching in the eyes of a child is quite common. If an adult has an enlarged vascular network of the eyeball, then this often occurs due to non-compliance with the visual regime. This does not pose any danger. But if such a phenomenon is noticed in a child, then most likely we are talking about an infection, as a result of which conjunctivitis can develop.
It is this that causes irritation in most cases. There are three main forms of this disease: allergic, viral and bacterial inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye. The characteristic signs are the same for all, these are increased sensitivity, redness of the eyes, a feeling of sand in the organs of vision, mucous or purulent discharge.
There is no point in delaying the solution to this problem. After all, we are talking about the baby's health. His body is developing and requires increased attention.
Who to contact?
Diagnosis of itchy eyes
The diagnosis is quite simple. But a person is unlikely to be able to do it on his own. So, the patient should consult a doctor if he has thick, greenish or purulent discharge from the eyes. Excessive pain, fatigue, sensitivity to light and decreased vision require immediate consultation with a doctor.
Physical diagnostics are carried out in the following way. First, the doctor asks the person several questions. After all, he needs to know how long ago this appeared and what is accompanied by. Then the specialist conducts a physical examination of the eyelids. Next, it is necessary to conduct several tests and observe the movement of the eye. Then the reaction of the pupils to light is checked. And finally, a vision test, how a person sees objects.
Based on the data obtained and after a thorough examination, a diagnosis can be made. Usually, it is a common allergic reaction or an infectious disease. In any case, treatment is prescribed.
Treatment for itchy eyes
Treatment can be carried out using improvised methods or medication. In any case, you should not prescribe any procedures on your own.
The first thing to do is to resort to cold compresses. If there are crusts on the eyelids, they can be softened with warm compresses. It is also worth using gentle washing of the eyelids with baby shampoo. To do this, apply it to a cotton swab and thus remove the crusts. Tears can also alleviate the condition.
Cooled artificial tears have a positive effect on the eyes. In case of viral and bacterial conjunctivitis, the patient should wash his hands as often as possible and only then touch the eye.
Basically, special ointments and drops are used to eliminate unpleasant symptoms. Thus, Tetracycline, Erythromycin and Tobrex ointments are widely used. As for drops, these are Olopatadin, Akular and Oktilia.
- Tetracycline ointment is used for bacterial inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye. It is strictly forbidden to use it for children. The liniment is placed behind the lower eyelid 3-5 times a day until all unpleasant symptoms disappear completely.
- Erythromycin ointment. For conjunctivitis and other infectious diseases, this is the best remedy. It has a pronounced antibacterial effect and is used even for newborns. The ointment should be placed under the eyelid three times a day, 0.2-0.3 grams. The course of treatment is 2-4 months.
- Tobrex ointment is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is used for various eye infections. The ointment is placed behind the eyelid 2-3 times a day, in case of severe infection, the dosage is increased to 4-5 times.
- Olopatadine is a broad-spectrum antihistamine drop. It is used to treat all types of conjunctivitis and other infectious eye diseases. To achieve a positive effect, it is necessary to instill 1-2 drops in each eye 2 times a day.
- Akular is an anti-inflammatory drug. It relieves swelling and irritation. The drug should be instilled 1 drop in each eye, 2-3 times a day. The dosage and duration of treatment are prescribed by a doctor.
- Oktilia is used in the complex therapy of diseases of the organs of vision. In addition, the drug eliminates allergic reactions. It should be instilled into the conjunctival sac 1-2 drops 2-3 times a day.
The main treatment should be prescribed by a doctor. Naturally, it is best to follow the drug treatment of the problem.
Eye drops for itching
Eye drops of various pharmacological groups are excellent in relieving the main symptoms. They not only combat the main cause of the disease, but also eliminate lacrimation, photophobia, swelling and conjunctivitis.
There are antihistamine drops, these are substances that actively remove allergic reactions and have a rapid antiallergic effect. These include Ketotofen, Opatanol, Azelastine and Lecrolin.
- Ketotofen is used to treat acute and chronic allergic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye, as well as seasonal and keratoconjunctivitis. Adults should instill one drop of the drug into each eye 2 times a day every day. For prevention purposes, the drug is used for 3 weeks. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disease.
- Opatanol. The drug is prescribed for the prevention and treatment of allergic eye diseases. In addition, it is a remedy that fights autumn fever and seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. The medication should be used 1-2 drops in each eye 2-3 times a day. The interval between drops should not be less than 8 hours. The course of treatment is up to 4 months.

- Lecrolin. It is used for acute and chronic allergic reactions in the eyes. The drug relieves symptoms of irritation caused by allergens. In addition, the drug is actively used for prevention. The drug should be instilled 4 times a day, one drop in each eye.
- Anti-inflammatory drugs relieve inflammation and actively fight unpleasant symptoms. But they should never be used without a doctor's knowledge. Because their long-term use can lead to the development of glaucoma, lens opacity and dry eye syndrome. The most effective of these drugs are Lothoprednol, Hydrocortisone, Dexamethasone and Tobradex.
- Lothoprednol. This drug relieves inflammation and swelling. It should be used daily. The number of drops is prescribed by the attending physician. Basically, it is 1 drop in each eye 2 times a day.
- Hydrocortisone relieves inflammation of all types. It fights the main eye problems, relieves irritation, swelling and inflammation. The medicine is instilled once a day in each eye. The duration of treatment is prescribed by the doctor.
- Dexamethasone is a universal drug. It not only relieves irritation, swelling and inflammation, but also eliminates the manifestation of an allergic reaction. It is used for conjunctivitis, blepharitis, iritis, keratitis and other inflammatory processes in the eyes. During treatment, the medicine is instilled 1 drop 3-5 times a day. Everything depends on a particular disease.
- Tobradex is used in combination therapy to treat inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye, blepharitis, barley and other inflammatory diseases. You need to instill 1-2 drops every 4-6 hours.
- Vasoconstrictors are substances with symptomatic action. They actively relieve irritation, remove swelling, relieve redness and constrict blood vessels. These include Okumetil, Vizin, Naphthyzinum and Irifrin.
- Okumetil is widely used to relieve eye irritation, reduce allergic conjunctivitis and in complex therapy. To achieve a positive result, it is necessary to use 1 drop 2-3 times a day.

- Naphthyzinum is used to eliminate allergic conjunctivitis, as a symptomatic anti-inflammatory drug. The drug should be instilled only into the affected eye 2-3 times a day, one drop at a time.
- Irifrin is in demand for inflammatory diseases of the iris, hyperemia and ophthalmological operations. The effect of using the drug is simply incredible. Relief comes in a minute and lasts for 2-7 hours. It is necessary to instill one drop of the drug into the affected area 2-3 times a day.
All of the above medications should not be used under any circumstances without a doctor’s approval.
Folk remedies for itchy eyes
Often folk remedies have a positive effect. Thus, chamomile tea, cucumber, rose water, aloe vera, raw potatoes and milk can remove the unpleasant symptom.
- Chamomile tea bags help relieve irritation. To make a soothing compress, simply brew the product and put it in the refrigerator. 30 minutes will be enough until they are completely "ready". Then place the bags on your eyes for 10 minutes. After using this product, your eyes will not itch so much.
- Cucumber is one of those vegetables that have a number of positive properties. It is the one that can relieve irritation and soothe the skin. The vegetable is great for getting rid of inflammation and swelling. Just cut the cucumber into thin slices and leave it in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes. Folk remedies are very effective in combating irritation, inflammation, and swelling. But they should never be used without a doctor's approval.
Prevention of itchy eyes
To avoid any unpleasant symptoms, prevention is necessary. There is nothing complicated in this process. First of all, you should monitor the cleanliness of your hands, because rubbing your eyes is a habit of many people. Dirty hands lead to inflammatory and infectious diseases.
In sunny weather, you should wear sunglasses. They will protect you from direct rays and will not irritate the mucous membrane. When working at a computer, it is also recommended to use special protective glasses. You need to give your eyes a rest and not overstrain them.
An allergen can be dust, pet hair, cosmetics, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to determine what exactly is having such a negative effect on the eyes and then reduce contact with this “object”. In addition, it is necessary to constantly wash, treat the eyes and monitor them.
Following simple rules can reduce the risk of developing an unpleasant symptom.
