Calculous chronic prostatitis

In clinical practice, when there are stones in the prostate gland during inflammation (in Latin calculus – stone), calculous prostatitis is diagnosed. Although this type of prostatitis is not distinguished in ICD-10, and prostate stones are classified as a separate subcategory.

What is prostatitis?

Today, prostatitis is the most common disease of the male reproductive system. The ailment manifests itself as inflammation of the prostate gland and is accompanied by tissue edema.

Prostatitis: types

Since ancient times, urologists have recognized clinical differences between acute and chronic inflammation of the prostate. They distinguished between active, latent and bacterial prostatitis. After the role of microorganisms in the etiology of this disease was discovered, prostatitis was classified as primary (caused by gonococcal infection) and secondary - as a consequence of other infections.

Chronic prostatitis: causes

Chronic prostatitis was the most common reason for men under 50 to see a urologist; this category of patients accounted for 8% of all patients seen by urologists in the United States. On average, a urologist sees 150-250 patients with prostatitis per year, about 50 of whom are newly diagnosed patients.
