Many people wonder what to do if they have a draft in their back. To alleviate the condition, you need to follow simple rules - warmth and rest. Let's consider the algorithm for treating the inflammatory process:
- It is recommended to apply a warming ointment (Finalgon, Nikoflex, Apizartron, Dolpik) to the affected tissues, having carefully studied the instructions for its use. It is also recommended to conduct a preliminary reaction to the sensitivity of the drug, that is, apply a little ointment to the elbow. If irritation does not appear within 10-20 minutes, then you can begin treatment.
- The lower back should be wrapped in warm fabric made of natural fibers. It is best to use a belt or a wool scarf, a downy shawl.
- To reduce pain, you should take painkillers. When seeking medical help, the doctor will prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in tablets or injections, which will speed up the recovery process.
- During therapy, it is necessary to avoid a soft mattress. The bed should be hard, the use of orthopedic bedding would be ideal.
During treatment, it is contraindicated to take a hot bath or steam in a sauna for a long time, as this will contribute to increased pain. It is also undesirable to apply hot compresses, and active rubbing of ointments can cause severe spasms, which will significantly worsen the patient's condition.
If the draft is mild, the above methods of therapy will be effective. But if the painful sensations persist for more than 5-7 days, you should immediately seek medical help.

Plasters
In addition to tablets, ointments or injections, you can use medicinal patches for back pain. They are long-acting, since the effect of applications does not occur immediately due to the entry of active components through the skin in small doses. This mechanism of action minimizes the risk of side effects.
Let's look at the main types of patches that relieve pain from myositis of the back:
- Pepper
An effective painkiller, helps with radiculitis, muscle inflammation of any localization, neuralgia, lumbago. Before applying the patch to the skin, the body must be degreased with alcohol or an antiseptic. Remove the protective film from the adhesive side of the patch and apply to the lesion. If there is no severe irritation, the product can be left on for 1-2 days. If there is a strong burning sensation, remove the patch and lubricate the skin with Vaseline.
- With NSAIDs
The patch contains anti-inflammatory substances that are absorbed through the skin. This product does not cause burning or irritation. Side effects are minimal.
- Reflective patches
Their mechanism of action is based on the reflection of heat generated by the body and its accumulation in the necessary place. That is, the patch works on the principle of warming belts. It is absolutely harmless and does not contain medicinal components. It is attached not to the surface of the body, but to underwear.

Mustard plasters
Mustard plasters are an effective painkiller, anti-inflammatory and irritant. They help with coughs, bruises, sprains and, of course, when you have a cold in your back. Their therapeutic effect is based on reflex reactions that occur due to local irritation of tissues by active components.
Mustard plasters are made from blue or black mustard, the seeds are fried and crushed. They can be purchased at a pharmacy or prepared at home. To do this, mix dry mustard powder with flour or starch in a 1:1 ratio and dilute everything with warm water until a thick doughy consistency is obtained. The mixture must be applied to thick paper, covered with gauze and allowed to dry a little.
Before applying to the painful area, the mustard plaster should be dipped in warm water for 10-15 seconds, then applied to the body and pressed firmly with a towel. When first used, the duration of therapy should be no more than 5 minutes, the duration of subsequent procedures should be increased to 10 minutes. Such treatment is best done no more than twice a day. Mustard plasters are contraindicated during pregnancy and at temperatures above 37.5°C. Vitamins
Vitamins play a significant role in muscle recovery and growth. Products rich in useful substances and vitamin complexes are recommended from the first days of painful symptoms and as a preventive measure against their appearance. They have a beneficial effect on the functioning of the entire body, including the muscular system. In case of frequent myositis and hypothermia of the back, you should take B vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins D, C, E, calcium.
Let's look at the main groups of vitamins prescribed for irritation of the sensitive nerve endings of the back:
- B1 – is important in the development and maintenance of muscle tone. Participates in the metabolism and formation of hemoglobin. Transfers oxygen to muscle cells. Deficiency of this substance has a negative effect on metabolic processes and energy balance. Contained in cereals, nuts, boiled meat, leafy greens, dried fruits, grain bread.
- B2 – riboflavin is involved in glucose metabolism and energy exchange. Contained in cheese, eggs, milk, cottage cheese, peas.
- B3 – takes part in energy production. Contained in milk, eggs, fish, legumes, mushrooms, potatoes.
- B6 – pyridoxine is necessary for protein metabolism and carbohydrate processing. Soybeans, fish, egg yolk, whole grain bread, brown rice are rich in this vitamin.
- B7 – participates in the metabolism of amino acids, which act as building material in protein synthesis. Mushrooms, brewer's yeast and beef liver are rich in it.
- B12 – necessary for normal functioning of the nervous system, energy production and cell regeneration. Contained in meat, eggs, soy, shrimp, dairy products.
- C – ascorbic acid is necessary for proper muscle function. Participates in the synthesis of collagen and elastin, has powerful antioxidant properties. Strengthens the walls of blood vessels and ensures good blood circulation. Found in strawberries, grapefruits, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, spinach.
- D – is useful for the musculoskeletal system, plays an important role in the immune system. Promotes the absorption of phosphorus and calcium, which are necessary for normal muscle function and bone growth. Contained in cottage cheese, cheese, fatty varieties of sea fish.
- E – tocopherol has antioxidant properties, participates in the process of restoring cell membranes. It is found in unrefined vegetable oils, spinach, carrots, almonds and avocados.
Many patients are prescribed injections of B vitamins, such as Milgamma, to reduce back pain. Particular attention should be paid to your diet, nutrition should be balanced.
Physiotherapy treatment
To eliminate the painful condition caused by a draft in the back, various methods are used. Physiotherapy treatment is one of the most effective. This type of therapy is used after the relief of acute symptoms. Very often it is used in combination with medications.

- Improves blood circulation in affected areas.
Let's consider effective physiotherapeutic methods:
- Myostimulation is a kind of muscle gymnastics using electric current impulses that penetrate into the affected areas. Eliminates inflammatory processes, minimizes pain syndrome, destroys pathogenic bacteria, and restores normal muscle tone.
- Massage – prescribed for congestion in muscles. Patients undergo both general massage (stroking, rubbing, vibration) and acupressure (pressing on active points on the body). increases immunity due to improved lymph and blood circulation. Removes constrictions in muscle tissue and restores their normal functioning.
- Medicinal electrophoresis is the introduction of medications into the body using small electrical impulses. It relieves pain and produces a prolonged therapeutic effect.
- Phonophoresis – medicinal substances are introduced into the body using ultrasound. The drugs penetrate the capillaries, providing a targeted therapeutic effect.
- Laser therapy – to eliminate pain, inflammation and swelling, light beams of infrared, red and ultraviolet spectrums are used. Effective for many diseases of the spine.
- Reflexotherapy - this method consists of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (electrical impulses intercept the pain signal from pain receptors), acupuncture (needling into biological points on the body responsible for the affected organ) and electroacupuncture (the lesion is affected by intermittent electrical impulses through acupuncture needles).
Physiotherapeutic treatment of inflammation of the back muscles and any other diseases should be combined with a healthy lifestyle and a balanced, vitamin-rich diet.
Folk remedies
To relieve the painful condition caused by hypothermia of the lower back, unconventional methods of therapy are very often used. Folk treatment should be carried out only with the appropriate medical permission.
Popular medicinal recipes:
- Take a leaf of white cabbage, spread it with honey and apply it to the affected area. The compress should be secured with a bandage and warm cloth, leaving it overnight. Instead of honey, you can use vegetable oil, horseradish or mustard.
- Prepare 4 tablespoons of butter or lard, mix them with 1 tablespoon of horsetail. Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Apply the resulting ointment to the sore spot 2-3 times a day, wrapping it with a warm cloth.
- Take a couple of potatoes, wash them thoroughly and boil them in their skins. After that, peel them and mash them. Put a cotton rag on your back and put the mashed potatoes on it. Cover the compress with film and a warm cloth. The procedure should be done every evening for 2-3 days.
- Mix a teaspoon of butter with ¼ spoon of badyagi powder. Rub your back with the mixture before going to bed and wrap it in a warm scarf. The procedure is recommended once a day, as badyagi can cause severe irritation of the skin.
Traditional medicine should be carried out in compliance with the proportions of all medicinal components. This will minimize the risk of developing side effects.

Herbal treatment
Herbal treatment has a positive effect in eliminating pain caused by a draft in the back. Decoctions, infusions, compresses and even ointments are prepared from medicinal plants.
- Chamomile, linden, horsetail and sweet clover are most often used for compresses. Dry herbs are tied in a gauze bag, steamed with boiling water and applied to the sore back, covered with polyethylene and wrapped in a warm scarf. Compresses relieve muscle spasms and painful sensations.
- To prepare a healing ointment, take 20 g of table salt and the same amount of dry crushed ginseng root. Mix the dry ingredients with 100 g of bear fat (can be purchased at a pharmacy), goose or pork fat. Rub the sore spots with the resulting product; the ointment can be applied under a bandage.
- An ointment based on horsetail and natural lard has pronounced warming properties. Take 20 g of dry plant material and 80 g of fat, mix everything thoroughly in a glass container. The ointment should be rubbed into painful areas. Instead of horsetail, you can use eucalyptus leaves, mint, celandine or sage, and replace lard with butter or goose fat.
- For rubbing, use herbal infusions in alcohol, as they have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and pain-relieving properties. Take two large onions, ½ cup of 70% medical alcohol and 1 liter of camphor oil. Grind the onion to a mushy state, combine with alcohol and add camphor after a couple of hours. The remedy should be infused for 10 days in a dark place.
- Pour 250 ml of water over a tablespoon of crushed willow bark and boil for 20-30 minutes in a water bath. Divide the resulting decoction into five parts and consume throughout the day. The course of treatment is 40 days, after which you need to take a break for 2 weeks and then continue the therapy again.
Before starting herbal treatment, you should consult with your doctor.
Homeopathy
If the back is pierced, local intense pains appear, which intensify without treatment. Homeopathy is an alternative and rather controversial method of therapy. There are certain remedies that are effective in treating affected muscles and allow you to restore normal mobility.
Homeopathic remedies:
- Calcarea carbonica – acute throbbing pain and increased weakness.
- Rhus toxicodendron – inflammation due to hypothermia, sharp shooting pains when moving.
- Arnica – muscle tension, paresthesia, crawling sensation on the skin.
- Ranunculus – pain radiates to the shoulder blade and/or chest.
- Bryonia – stabbing pains from any movement, relief at rest and when pressing on the affected area.
- Rhododendron – discomfort increases at night and when at rest.
- Guajacum - pain increases with heat.
- Belladonna – unpleasant sensations are accompanied by a feeling of heat and pulsation in the area of inflammation, sharp pains that intensify from cold.
The above mentioned remedies are most often used to treat myositis of the back muscles. But before using them, you should consult a homeopathic doctor who will select the necessary dosage and course of treatment.
Surgical treatment
If conservative therapy and physiotherapy procedures have proven ineffective in eliminating pain caused by a blown back or it has been established that the discomfort occurs against the background of other pathologies, then surgical treatment may be prescribed.
The main diseases of the spine that require surgery to treat are:
- Degenerative pathologies (spinal stenosis, lumbar scoliosis, spondylosis, osteochondrosis).
- Herniated disc.
- Spondylolisthesis (slipping of the vertebrae) and scoliosis.
- Traumatic spinal injuries.
- Various inflammatory pathologies (rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, infectious spondylodiscitis).
- Purulent inflammation.
Some operations are performed using minimally invasive technologies under local anesthesia, while others, on the contrary, require hospitalization. Based on this, the recovery period can be from several days to several months. Laser and microscopic endoscopic technologies are widely used.
Let's consider the types of surgical intervention:
- Radiofrequency nerve destruction – using a radiofrequency electrode, nerves that transmit pain signals are blocked. During the operation, X-rays are used to visualize the place where the electrode with a thin needle should be inserted. This method is minimally invasive.
- Foraminotomy – during the operation, the doctor removes formations (fragments of the vertebra or intervertebral disc, osteophytes) narrowing the canal with nerve roots. Due to the foraminal widening of the opening, irritation of the nerve roots is eliminated.
- Percutaneous nucleoplasty is a method based on the thermal effect on intervertebral discs. Allows to restore their normal shape.
- Discectomy – performed in case of intervertebral hernia. During the operation, the doctor removes the part of the disc that irritates the nerve endings and causes pain.
In addition to the above methods, rhizotomy (removal of facet nerves) or cordotomy (intersection of the spinal cord conducting structures) may be prescribed. But do not forget that surgical treatment is not always effective in eliminating pain, but can cause irreversible consequences and complications.
Can I go to the sauna if I have a draft in my back?
To eliminate irritation of the nerve endings of the lower back caused by hypothermia, warming up with dry hot air or moist steam is recommended. That is, the answer to the question of whether it is possible to go to the bathhouse if you have a draft in your back is unambiguous - yes, you can. A one-time visit to the sauna relaxes the muscular system, accelerates the regeneration process and eliminates painful sensations.
But the bath is allowed only with moderate pain syndrome. Since with strong muscle spasms the steam room contributes to the increase of swelling and discomfort. In this case, a hot bath is also prohibited. With the right approach to treatment, the pain subsides in 2-3 days.
Is it possible to play sports if you have a draft in your back?
Many patients diagnosed with myositis are interested in the same question: is it possible to play sports if you have a draft in your back? In case of severe pain and muscle spasms, physical activity is contraindicated, as it can cause complications of the painful condition. If the discomfort is moderate, it is recommended to perform simple but effective exercises that relieve muscle tension.
- Get on all fours, resting your palms and knees on the floor. Slowly bend your back and tilt your head. After a couple of seconds, bend back, throwing your head back onto your shoulders. The exercise should be done for 1-1.5 minutes.
- Lie on your back, bend one leg at the knee, clasping it with your hands. Smoothly pull the knee to the chest. Maintain this position for 30-40 seconds. Repeat the exercise on the other side. Do 2-3 approaches.
- Lie on your stomach, legs together, arms bent at the elbows under the chin. Gradually stretch your arms forward, trying to reach as far as possible. Do 3-4 approaches.
The above exercises can be performed after recovery as a preventative measure against muscle diseases.
