The characteristic climatic conditions - that is, the weather at the Dead Sea - are related to the location of the salt lake itself.
As is known, the Dead Sea lies at the bottom of the Great Rift Valley (another name is the Jordan Tectonic Basin). This valley stretches for almost 350 km and is a continuation of the Great African Rift (6,000 km long - from Turkey to Mozambique). In the northern part of the Jordan Basin is the valley of the Jordan River (the only river flowing into the Dead Sea), and in the central part is the Dead Sea itself (about 80 km long and a maximum width of no more than 12 km).
Weather in Israel at the Dead Sea
The Dead Sea area is located 410 meters below sea level, so the atmospheric pressure in this area is higher than the usual average and is approximately 800 mm Hg.
In addition, the maximum width of the Jordan Basin is no more than 25 km, and the height of the slopes (in some places very steep) reaches 1000-1400 meters. That is, all the conditions for a special climate in this area are present. And if the climate in the southern part of Israel is tropical and subtropical, then the climate of the Dead Sea is dry desert: 90% of the time (almost 330 days a year) the sun shines here, and the average annual precipitation is 50-60 mm.
Dead Sea weather by month
In the winter months, temperatures reach a minimum of +12-13°C, and in the summer, maximums fluctuate in the range of +27-39°C.
Weather at the Dead Sea in January: average daytime air temperature +20°C; nighttime +11°C; average monthly sea water temperature +20°C.
Weather at the Dead Sea in February: average daytime air temperature +22°C; nighttime +13°C; average monthly sea water temperature +18°C.
Weather at the Dead Sea in March: average daytime air temperature +25°C; nighttime +15.5°C; average monthly sea water temperature +20-21°C.
Weather at the Dead Sea in April: average daytime air temperature +29°C; nighttime +20-21°C; average monthly sea water temperature +24°C.
Weather at the Dead Sea in May: average daytime air temperature +33-34°C; nighttime +24°C; average monthly sea water temperature +28-29°C.
Weather at the Dead Sea in June: average daytime air temperature +35-37°C; nighttime +27-28°C; average monthly sea water temperature +31-32°C.
The Dead Sea in July and August warms up to an average of +34-35°C, and the average daytime air temperature is +38-39°C (but can rise to +45-47°C). The Dead Sea in September is very warm (+32-33°C), and during the day in the sun the thermometer shows up to +35-37°C.
The Dead Sea in October "cools down" to +29-30°C (with an average daytime air temperature of +32°C), and the Dead Sea in November is pleasantly invigorating: the water temperature is +23-25°C. And the weather on the Dead Sea in November is very comfortable: the average air temperature during the day does not rise more than +26-27°C, and at night it does not fall below +18°C.
At the same time, the air humidity hardly exceeds 40% in winter and autumn, and in summer it drops to 23%. In autumn and spring, winds blow along the Jordan from the Red Sea. In winter and spring, there is a risk of flooding on rainy days, when rainwater from relatively remote areas of the Jerusalem Mountains flows into the Dead Sea basin.
The Dead Sea in December (water temperature in the middle of the day) and daytime air temperature are usually the same - on average +22°C, but at night the thermometer drops to +13°C.
So the swimming season at the Dead Sea is year-round! And to the question - when is the best time to go to the Dead Sea - doctors answer: for patients with psoriasis in remission, the recommended treatment period is from May to September, and during the exacerbation period - from October to April.
Weather in Jordan at the Dead Sea
The weather in Jordan at the Dead Sea is determined by the same factors as in Israel, although in Jordanian territory the depth of the Dead Sea relative to the level of the world ocean is less - 394.6 meters.
In Jordan, in the Dead Sea region, the air temperature during the winter months can fluctuate from +7-8°C (it never gets lower) to maximum values of +18-20°C.
In April-May, the maximum daytime temperature is +25-27°C; in summer, the air warms up to +29°C in June and up to +35°C in August. It rains in this country from October to March (the most precipitation occurs in December and January). But in the Dead Sea area, the amount of precipitation is extremely low: even in the rainiest season (December-March), its level rarely exceeds 5 mm per month.
The weather at the Dead Sea (in Hebrew, Hamelach Yam) is all year round, conducive to relaxation and treatment of a wide range of diseases. Hurry to take advantage of the natural powers of the Dead Sea, because, as ecologists note, the water level in it is decreasing by about 30 cm per year – due to the industry and agriculture of Israel and Jordan. And some scientists predict that by 2050, the unique reservoir may dry up…
