To get to the beaches of the Dead Sea in its northern part, you only need to travel 39 km from Jerusalem, and from Tel Aviv you will have to cover a distance of two and a half times more.
Dead Sea Beaches: Northern Coast
Here, on the northern coast, there are such Dead Sea beaches as Kalia Beach, Neve Midbar Beach, Biankini Beach and Mineral Beach.
The northernmost beach of the Dead Sea, Kalia, located on the territory of the kibbutz of the same name and next to the archaeological reserve of Qumran, has umbrellas, showers, a pool with fresh water, as well as a bar and massage cabins. The beach is paid, but parking for vehicles is free. There is a water park nearby. For overnight stays, you can use the guest houses run by the administration of Kibbutz Kalia, or tents located almost on the shore.
There is another small nature reserve in this region - Einot Tsukim, and on its territory there is also a paid beach, Einot Tsukim.
Further south is the paid beach of Neve Midbar, which has thatched sun umbrellas, changing rooms, showers and toilets, and a children's pool. You can rent sun loungers and towels. There is also a shop selling Dead Sea products, a restaurant, and a campsite, and a Bedouin tent and barbecue areas nearby. There is a separate nudist area in the southern part of the beach.
In the same area there is a paid beach Biankini with a green area, a pool with fresh water and a pool with natural healing mud. You can also visit the spa center, which belongs to the local resort complex Biankini Resort Village, as well as a restaurant of Moroccan cuisine.
The Mineral Beach on the Dead Sea is also located on its northern shore – near the kibbutz Mitzpe Shalem. This paid beach, which is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (on Friday and Saturday from 8:00), is considered one of the best-maintained beaches on the Dead Sea in Israel.
In addition to the amenities that other Dead Sea beaches have, there is a pool with thermal hydrogen sulphide water (with a temperature of +39°C) and a center for wellness treatments and various massages.
It should be noted that there are no free Dead Sea beaches on this part of its coast.
Free Dead Sea Beaches
Free beaches of the Dead Sea are concentrated in its southern end. Why? Apparently, the reason is that in this part there are Dead Sea basins, into which water from the north is pumped through a system of special hydraulic structures (channel and dams).
The fact is that over the past 47 years the water level of the Dead Sea has dropped by 40 meters and continues to drop by more than 100 cm per year. Already in the mid-60s of the last century, the salt lake in the southern part completely dried up, so water is pumped here…
The resorts of Ein Bokek and Ein Gedi are located on this coast. The free public beach of Ein Bokek Beach and the free beach of Neve Zohar Beach located a little further south have sun umbrellas and showers with fresh water.
Not far from the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve there is a 24-hour public beach called Ein Gedi Beach – with the same facilities. In addition, there is a restaurant and free parking.
A wild beach on the Dead Sea is a relative concept. For example, free recreation in the coastal zone is allowed at a distance of 0.5 km from the Ein Gedi kibbutz. In the rocky area reserved for "wild" vacationers, there are paid toilets and showers. Here you can (also not for free) pitch a tent. By the way, almost all free beaches of the Dead Sea provide such an opportunity.
