The activated protein C cleaves the factors Va and VIIIa, thereby inhibiting the clotting process.

Epidemiology

The prevalence of this mutation in the European population is about 5%, but this gene anomaly is extremely rare in the Asian and African populations. In patients with spontaneous venous thrombosis, a Leyden mutation occurs from 20 to 60% of cases.

Causes of the resistance factor V to the activated protein C

Any of several mutations of factor V causes its resistance to activated protein C, thereby increasing the tendency to thrombosis. The most common factor V mutation is the Leyden mutation. Homozygous mutations to a greater extent increase the risk of thrombosis than heterozygous.

Diagnostics of the resistance factor V to the activated protein C

The diagnosis is based on functional studies of plasma coagulation (no prolongation of the TTV test in the presence of snake venom activating protein C) and molecular analysis of the factor V gene.

Treatment of the resistance factor V to the activated protein C

In cases of need for treatment, first prescribe heparin, followed by warfarin.
