Today, the number of neurological conditions is constantly increasing. There are many reasons for this: from overwork and an unhealthy lifestyle to severe structural and functional disorders of the nervous system and brain. One of the most common pathologies is trigeminal neuropathy. This pathology is characterized by loss of sensitivity, pain not only in the area of damage, but also along the entire length of the nerve. If measures are not taken in a timely manner, the disease will only progress. It practically does not go away on its own.

Most doctors first try to use conservative therapy. However, it may not always be effective, and then there is a need to use surgical methods. As practice shows, conservative treatment is effective in the early stages of pathology development, if muscle atrophy has not yet developed.

An important stage of successful treatment is strict adherence to the prescribed motor regime. At the same time, it is necessary to reduce the load. The doctor should also describe in detail which types of movements are best excluded, which, on the contrary, are included. It is important to exclude prolonged stay in one position, monotonous work, it is better to diversify the range of movements as much as possible.

Etiological therapy is also carried out, which is based on the mandatory elimination of the cause that caused the disease. In the presence of inflammation, anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed. They help relieve pain and reduce swelling and hyperemia. Regenerating drugs may be required to restore damaged cells and tissues. If severe pain is a concern, painkillers and analgesics are prescribed. Drugs aimed at improving peripheral and cerebral circulation, normalizing the hormonal background of the immune status may be required. Physiotherapeutic methods of treatment are often used, homeopathic remedies, herbal medicine, and even folk methods are prescribed.

Medicines

When using medications, you must strictly follow safety precautions: consult with your doctor about each step taken, follow all instructions, and do not change the dosage or duration of taking the drug on your own. Treatment of neuropathies is very dangerous due to its side effects.

If you make even a minor mistake in therapy, the treatment will be useless at best, and at worst, it will cause the condition to worsen and the disease to progress. The most dangerous complication is brain damage and paralysis. It should be taken into account that many drugs have a long-term effect. They act very slowly, and their main effect begins to manifest itself after a certain concentration of the active substance has accumulated in the body. Therefore, they must be taken constantly, for 5-6 months, or even longer.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed: acetylsalicylic acid 2-3 grams per day, indomethacin 100-150 mg per day, voltaren - 100-150 mg per day, brufen 1-2 grams per day. These drugs are used for a long time, for many years. At the same time, corticosteroid drugs can be administered directly into the inflammation site, for example, hydrocortisone, kenalog. The progression of the disease is the basis for the use of basic agents, for example, chrysalone 2 ml 5% or 1 ml 10% solution once a week intramuscularly.

Vitamins

For successful treatment, it is necessary to use vitamins, since without them, it is impossible to restore the body, the normal functioning of the nervous and muscular systems is impossible. With a lack of vitamins, it is almost impossible to effectively eliminate inflammation and pain. The main vitamins that should be included in the therapy are taken in the following daily doses:

  • Vitamin PP – 60 mg
  • Vitamin H – 150 mcg
  • Vitamin B1 – 4.5 mg
  • Vitamin B2 – 5.4 mg
  • Vitamin D – 45 mcg.

It is also recommended to take vitamin C in a double dose - 1000 mg per day. It promotes active oxidation-reduction reactions, normalizes metabolic processes, eliminates free radicals. This has a positive effect on the activity of the nervous system: it increases tissue conductivity, normalizes excitability, relieves inflammation and pain.

Physiotherapy treatment

The main method of physiotherapeutic treatment is electrophoresis. During this procedure, medications are administered to the patient through the skin or mucous membranes. Microcurrents are used to improve their penetration into tissues and to target those tissues that require therapeutic treatment.

The medicine penetrates directly into the inflamed area of the nerve and has a therapeutic effect there. The advantage is that the drug acts precisely, purposefully, and accordingly, its dosage can be reduced. This significantly reduces the likelihood of overdose and side effects. Salicylates and hydrocortisone are often administered using electrophoresis.

Physical therapy has a good effect. It is recommended to work with an instructor who will correctly select exercises that will have the necessary effect and eliminate symptoms. The instructor will also control the intensity, load strength, frequency and frequency of repetition. In most cases, the instructor develops an individual set of exercises to be performed at home. Exercises should be performed in small doses, but often. Some movements should be excluded.

Traditional treatment of trigeminal neuropathy

Various means of animal, plant, organic and inorganic origin have found wide application among the people. Ointment has proven itself well. To prepare, take 50 grams of badger fat, melt it over low heat, add previously prepared ashes of garden trees, boil for several minutes. Then remove from heat, and with constant stirring add 2-3 drops of fir essential oil. Continue stirring for 2-3 minutes, then set aside and allow to brew.

It is used in the form of applications or ointment bandages, which are applied to the affected area. For the application, take a bandage folded in several layers, apply a thin layer of ointment to it and place it on the affected area. After this, hold for 10-15 minutes. After removing the application, wipe the skin with a dry cloth, and also apply dry heat on top.

To make an ointment bandage, you need to apply the application as described above, then apply dry heat on top. It is recommended to apply a warm fabric, preferably made of natural wool. You can apply a layer of cotton wool over the application, and then wrap it in a warm scarf. It is necessary to hold for at least 40 minutes. After this time, you need to remove the application, wipe the affected area with dry cotton wool or a napkin, apply dry heat on top again and hold for at least 30 minutes.

Alcohol tincture of buckthorn leaves with sea buckthorn berries is good for wiping affected areas. It relieves pain, eliminates inflammation and swelling, improves tissue conductivity, and has a calming effect on the nervous system. To prepare the tincture, take the grass and berries in a 1:2 ratio and pour vodka or alcohol over them. Then let it sit for 24 hours.

Can be used for rubbing, wiping the skin surface. For wiping, soak a bandage or cotton wool in the infusion, squeeze it out, and wipe the affected area. Allow it to dry, then wipe again, and so on 3-5 times.

It is recommended to perform a preliminary massage for rubbing. First, lightly stroke and warm up the skin in the affected area. After that, perform squeezing movements: in the area of pain, press harder, in other areas - moderate. Squeezing is done by grasping the massaged area with both hands, moving along the entire body part, to the nearest lymph node. Stroking and squeezing are done on dry skin, without tincture.

After this, proceed directly to rubbing. Take a small amount of tincture in your hands and apply it to the skin. It is better to use a warmed tincture. With sharp movements, the skin is moved in such a way that a fold is formed under the hands, which needs to be moved. You need to make intense movements. An indicator of high-quality rubbing is reddening of the skin and a slight burning sensation.

For internal use, you can use a stimulant that restores the protective potential, endurance of the body, its ability to resist infectious and inflammatory processes, stimulates the activity of the nervous and muscular systems. To prepare, you will need to squeeze the juice of one lemon. Pass the pulp together with the peel through a meat grinder. Similarly, pass the figs and pomegranate peel. Mix everything, add honey to taste. Take a tablespoon, washing down with two tablespoons of squeezed lemon juice.

Herbal treatment

Mullein is used to relieve inflammation and pain. Flowers and leaves are used. Due to the high content of essential oils and saponins, they have an anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous effect. They are used as a tincture for rubbing into the affected area. You can make a compress. To do this, apply a layer of gauze soaked in the tincture, cover with cellophane on top, and then apply a layer of cotton wool. Cover with regular cloth or gauze on top, then apply a layer of dry heat (warm woolen cloth). Scalded flowers and leaves can also be applied to damaged areas for pain relief.

Common burdock is used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in affected areas. It is often used in the form of puree. To prepare, take a large burdock leaf, cut it into small pieces, mix with honey. Add half a glass of water or milk, boil for several minutes. Then strain. The decoction can be used separately for rubbing, compresses. The thick mass is applied to the affected areas for 10-15 minutes.

A decoction or infusion of thistle is used to tone nerve and muscle fibers, normalize excitability processes, and transmit impulses. It can also be used to wipe affected areas to relieve pain and eliminate inflammation. To prepare decoctions or infusions, take about 30 grams of the herb per glass of water.

Homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies are widely used in modern medicine. Despite the fact that they are safer than traditional drugs, you should not neglect precautions. You should always consult a doctor before starting to use any medicine. Medicine knows many examples when self-medication ended not only with the absence of any result, but also with a deterioration in the condition. There are cases when non-compliance with the treatment regimen and violation of the dosage ended in the progression of the disease and even complete paralysis.

To treat neuropathy, an ointment based on plant components and propolis extract is used. To prepare, take propolis and a small amount of water, melt in a water bath, add half a teaspoon of flax seed, as well as a quarter spoon of dried cloves, boil for 3-4 minutes. After that, add a few drops of freshly squeezed aloe juice, mix thoroughly. The ointment is used in the form of applications to the damaged area of the body, compresses, as rubbing and as a means for massage.

Also, in order to prevent the progression of the disease and restore the affected area, it is recommended to do warming with bone meal. Take a linen bag, pour a small amount of bone meal into it, tie it tightly. Heat it in a hot frying pan or in the oven, apply it to the place where the pain is felt most strongly. First, wrap the bag in several layers of fabric until it reaches a comfortable temperature. Then, as it cools, remove part of the fabric and place it back on the body.

Oil for rubbing and lubricating the sore area also works well. Any base oil is used for its preparation. It is better to take oil from the seeds of fruit trees, for example, apricot, peach kernel, almond oil. Add 2-3 drops of spruce oil and the same amount of eucalyptus, mix thoroughly, and apply externally.

For warming, resorption of inflammatory processes, it is recommended to use pepper oil. To prepare it, take any oil, for example, olive oil. Add a teaspoon of ground pepper (preferably red), mix thoroughly, let it brew for an hour, rub the affected area.

Surgical treatment of trigeminal neuropathy

Surgical methods are used only after conservative treatment has shown ineffectiveness. The indication for this is progressive muscle weakness, severe pain along the nerve. Often the cause is a narrowing of the canal through which the nerve passes.

During the operation, all areas that put pressure on the damaged nerve are cut and removed, or the nerve is moved to another area where there will be no pressure on it.
