Treatment of periodontal disease at home is quite simple, but requires consistency.
Human teeth are very strong structures made of hard tissues that are located in the mouth and serve as a tool for grinding food. In adults, the normal number of teeth is from 28 to 32. Rarely, but still, people have additional teeth, the so-called supernumerary ones.
During a person's life, 2 sets of teeth grow - baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth begin to appear in children from 3 months and are replaced by permanent teeth between 6 and 12 years of age.
The nature of a person's life, and especially nutrition, greatly influence the teeth, destroying them and changing the color of the enamel. Also, a considerable influence is exerted on the gums in which the teeth are located. The gums are a mucous membrane that covers the upper and lower jaw and encircles the necks of the teeth.
Let us take a closer look at a disease of the oral cavity called periodontosis.
Periodontosis is a permanent lesion of the periodontal tissue, which leads to the exposure of the necks of the teeth. Often, both in everyday use of the term, as well as in medical practice, there is a substitution of the meaning of this concept. Periodontosis is a disease in which teeth become loose, gum pockets appear, and purulent fluid is released from the gums. However, this is not periodontosis, but periodontitis.
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease, and periodontosis is most likely a hereditary disease or a reaction of the body to disorders of the endocrine glands and diseases of the internal organs.
However, both diseases are dangerous because ultimately, without proper treatment, the patient may be left without teeth and with painful sensations in the mouth.
We consider the treatment of periodontal disease in the context of periodontitis, since most people do not distinguish between these concepts.
Treatment of periodontal disease
So what should a person who has periodontosis (periodontitis) do? This disease is treated at home using medications and traditional medicine.
First of all, it is worth noting that the first step in treating periodontal disease at home should be daily thorough oral care. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day for 2-5 minutes, and it is also advisable to use mouthwashes, dental floss and other products available on the shelves of pharmacies and specialized stores for oral hygiene.
As advised by the candidate of medical sciences Grudyanov A. I., for the most thorough and safe cleaning of the oral cavity it is necessary to use a toothbrush no more than 2-2.5 centimeters long and less than a centimeter wide, with three rows of synthetic bristles of medium hardness, movable in the head area. The scientist also advises to wash the brush with hot water and soap before and after use to destroy the microbes remaining on the brush after brushing your teeth. It is also important to remember how to brush your teeth correctly so as not to aggravate the disease - in order to avoid pressing food debris into the interdental spaces, the upper teeth should be brushed from top to bottom, and the lower teeth - from bottom to top, then go over with circular and horizontal movements. Do not forget to also brush the back of the tongue, which often collects most of the bacteria and keeps them in the oral cavity. After brushing, rinse your mouth with two glasses of warm water.
Such hygiene will help to avoid significant layers of tartar, which leads to the appearance of periodontosis. Tartar is dangerous because it contains bacteria that destroy bone tissue.
Also, an integral part of the prevention of periodontosis should be the use of hard vegetables and fruits, with the help of which gums are massaged when biting. Regularly monitor your teeth, visit the dentist once or twice a year, if necessary, replace affected teeth with dentures to relieve excessive stress on the remaining healthy teeth.
Toothpaste for periodontal disease
Touching upon the issue of oral hygiene again, it is necessary to pay special attention to toothpastes for periodontal disease.
Nowadays, there are all sorts of pastes on store shelves that supposedly can help cure, whiten teeth, strengthen gums, etc. However, you shouldn't trust everything that's written on the packaging.
Toothpaste for periodontal disease is not able to overcome the disease on its own, however, especially at the first stage of the disease, the paste can help eliminate bad breath and reduce bleeding from the gums.
Toothpaste for periodontosis, which can really help in the treatment of this disease, should contain natural components in the form of medicinal herbs - chamomile, mint, nettle, sage, St. John's wort and others. Since time immemorial, these plants have been famous for their healing, hemostatic, anti-inflammatory effects. In addition to natural components, toothpastes for periodontosis should include the following medications:
- Potassium tetrapyrophosphate, which helps fight tartar;
- Potassium Nitrate and Sodium Citrate, which are necessary to reduce tooth sensitivity;
- Strontium chloride, which also reduces tooth sensitivity.
However, the effect may be unnoticeable and insignificant if you rely solely on the properties of the paste. For the treatment of periodontosis at home, it is also necessary to use other medical or other drugs.
Treatment of periodontal disease with hydrogen peroxide
People often resort to "grandmother's" recipes in the treatment of diseases that they think they can cure and diagnose on their own. Especially if a person has not seen the desired result due to the use of medications prescribed by qualified medical professionals.
Thus, one of the most effective recipes for treating periodontosis at home is the use of hydrogen peroxide. If you follow basic rules of caution in such self-treatment, this method of combating periodontosis is very effective and does not cause any side effects or other complications.
There are many ways to treat periodontal disease with hydrogen peroxide - the drug is used internally, as a means for rubbing gums, as a liquid for rinsing the mouth cavity and as an auxiliary substance that is added to toothpaste before brushing teeth.
When hydrogen peroxide enters the blood, the drug breaks down into oxygen and water, which has a beneficial effect on the body. Oxygen saturates the cells and helps stimulate the functioning of various body systems, and water is simply released from the body.
Let us describe various ways of using this miraculous remedy.
Taking hydrogen peroxide internally
In order to treat periodontosis with hydrogen peroxide by oral administration, it is necessary to add 1 drop of a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to 50 ml of clean drinking water. It is necessary to take this mixture one hour before meals or two hours after meals, on an empty stomach. At first, mild nausea or stomach upset may be observed, a slight rash on the skin may appear, which should pass in 2-3 days. If they are observed longer, it is necessary to stop the course of treatment. The usual course of treatment is 10 days, then a break for 3 days, then repeat the course. A safe dosage is no more than 30 drops of hydrogen peroxide per day. Never take hydrogen peroxide in its pure form!

Wiping gums with hydrogen peroxide
The gums can be wiped with a cotton swab soaked in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. This procedure strengthens the gums and reduces their bleeding. Garlic can also be used to wipe the gums along with hydrogen peroxide - they are very similar in their effects on the body. Garlic and hydrogen peroxide will help improve blood circulation in the gums and neutralize foci of infection in the mouth.
Rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide
In order to clean the oral cavity, and especially the gums, from infections, you need to take 100 ml of water and completely dissolve 2 hydroperite tablets in them. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with this solution 3-4 times a day.

Cleaning teeth with hydrogen peroxide
In order to enhance the effect of the special paste used for periodontosis, mix the paste with a few drops of a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide. Brush your teeth with this mixture up to 4 times a day. It is especially good if your toothbrush is also equipped with special rubber inserts for massaging the gums.
However, you can also make your own toothpaste. Take half a teaspoon of baking soda, add freshly squeezed lemon juice (10 drops), stir well and add 20 drops of hydrogen peroxide. Brush your teeth thoroughly with this homemade paste and leave it in your mouth for 10-15 minutes. Do not rinse your mouth after brushing. It is also not recommended to eat or drink for 15-20 minutes.
Ointment and gel for periodontal disease
Ointments and gels based on medicinal plants are also effective in the fight against periodontosis.
One of the most well-known drugs is heparin ointment for periodontosis. It has an anti-inflammatory effect and acts with the help of the active substance - heparin - on the exudative inflammatory phase. Heparin also stops bleeding gums. This ointment helps improve blood circulation in the gums and stops tissue destruction processes.
- Gel "Cholisal" is one of the most effective drugs for combating inflammatory processes in gum tissue. In addition, the gel from periodontosis "Cholisal" destroys microbes, reduces swelling of the gums, eliminates bleeding and anesthetizes the affected areas of the oral cavity.
- Gel "Metrogyl Denta" is a medicinal product based on the antibiotic Metronidazole and the antiseptic Chlorhexidine, which acts only on the surface of the gums. It is inferior to the previous drug in terms of the nature of action and effectiveness.
- Kamistad gel - contains chamomile extract and the pain-relieving component Lidocaine hydrochloride. It relieves pain, but has a rather weak anti-inflammatory effect. The course of treatment with the gel is 7-10 days. During the treatment, numbness of the gums and tongue may be observed.
- Gel "Asepta" - gel for periodontosis based on propolis. Not a therapeutic agent of anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial action.
Balsam "Asepta" - a medicine for periodontosis based on the antibiotic Metronidazole and the antiseptic Chlorhexidine. It can have an antimicrobial and antiseptic effect. When the balsam gets on the oral mucosa, it takes the form of a gel. The composition of the gel "Metrogil Denta" is the same as its components.
Rinsing for periodontal disease
The simplest way to treat periodontosis at home is to use special infusions of medicinal plants as mouth rinses. However, in order to achieve the expected effect, you need to brush your teeth before rinsing and perform the procedure every 3-4 hours.
Most often, infusions and decoctions of medicinal plants such as lingonberry leaves, calendula flowers, wild pansies, and agrimony are used to treat periodontosis at home. Oak bark also has a very noticeable effect on periodontosis. These plants help relieve inflammation and reduce pain.
An infusion of walnut leaves can help if your gum structure has changed and they have become loose. To prepare a rinse, you will need 2 teaspoons of crushed leaves, pour 250 ml of boiling water and let it brew for 1 hour. This infusion should be used to rinse the mouth 6 times a day.
To strengthen teeth, you need to prepare a tincture of 4 tablespoons of erect cinquefoil, 2 tablespoons of horse sorrel and 300 ml of brine strained from sauerkraut. This infusion should be infused for 24 hours. Use for rinsing at least 6 times a day.
Hot infusions of burnet leaves, blackberries, sand sedge, St. John's wort and blood-red geranium will help fight bleeding gums. An infusion of a handful of any of the above herbs per liter of boiling water can also be prepared in a thermos. Let it brew for 2 hours and then rinse your mouth frequently throughout the day.
Also, a decoction of golden mustache helps with periodontosis, especially with the addition of chamomile and half a teaspoon of salt per glass of mixture. This remedy will not only prevent exacerbation of the disease, but also remove bleeding gums and purulent formations in the gum pockets.
Treatment of periodontal disease with propolis
If the pain in the teeth and gums is very strong, propolis and calamus can help you. These infusions will help relieve inflammation and also relieve pain in the oral cavity. Infusions are prepared separately. Half a glass of calamus root should be poured with 0.5 liters of vodka. Pour 20 g of propolis into another jar and also pour 0.5 liters of vodka. The solutions should be infused for 10 days, shaking the infusions periodically. After the infusion period has expired, mix 1 tablespoon of calamus tincture with 1 teaspoon of propolis tincture for one rinse and rinse your mouth for 2 minutes. The treatment period is a month, rinsing is best done at night.
Homeopathy for periodontal disease
Homeopathic remedies for the treatment of periodontitis at home should be selected individually for each person. However, there are a number of names that are sold without a prescription and can be used for self-treatment.
- Acidum nitricum 6 – taken in case of loose teeth, loose gums, bleeding gums, excessive salivation, and also with an unpleasant rotten smell from the mouth. Take 7 granules two or three times a day.
- Phosphorus 6 – is taken in case of predominant periodontal disease affecting the upper jaw. Dose: 5 drops twice or three times a day.
- Iodium 6 - is taken in case of predominant periodontal disease affecting the lower jaw. It is necessary to take 5 drops twice a day.
- Alternately, sodium carbonicum 6 and silicea 6 are taken for periodontosis caused by diabetes. The daily dose is 7 drops of each preparation.
However, it is worth remembering that homeopathy is not a panacea for periodontosis. Treatment of periodontosis at home with homeopathic remedies should also be supported by medical drugs and daily oral hygiene.
Treatment of periodontal disease with salt
One of the simplest and least expensive means for treating periodontitis is rinsing the mouth with a saline solution. You can also use regular table salt to dilute the solution, but sea salt has the best effect. It contains a valuable element - iodine, which helps in healing and strengthening the gums.
To treat periodontal disease at home using salt, add 1 teaspoon of salt to a glass of water and stir thoroughly until completely dissolved. After each meal, dip your toothbrush into the solution and brush your teeth and gums. This procedure will help kill harmful bacteria that destroy gum tissue, stop bleeding, and relieve gum inflammation.
It is also necessary to rub sea salt into your gums with your finger several times a day. This procedure will also strengthen your gums.
Vitamins for periodontal disease
In addition to various medicinal plants and medical preparations, along with homeopathic remedies, vitamins are also necessary for treating periodontosis at home. Vitamins for periodontosis have the most noticeable effect on the course of the disease at its initial stage.
The following vitamins are most often used for periodontal disease:
- Vitamin B1 – will help if periodontosis is based on the development of other diseases (diabetes mellitus, Botkin's disease, pathologies of the nervous system, gastric ulcer and others). Improves metabolism and trophism of the periodontium. Taken for 30-40 days, 2-3 times a day, 0.005-0.01 g.
- Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) will help with bleeding gums. Take after meals two or three times a day.
- Vitamins B6 and B12 in the form of injections are prescribed to patients who have developed periodontal disease due to diabetes, neurasthenia or pathological development of the digestive system.
- Vitamin A is prescribed to restore gum tissue. The course of treatment is 3 weeks, the dosage is 40 drops or 1 capsule daily.
- Vitamin E helps to normalize oxidative processes in the body. Treatment involves taking 50-100 ml of 306 oil solution daily.
- Folic acid improves metabolic processes in the body.
- Beta-carotene has immunostimulating and antioxidant effects.
- Quercetin eliminates bleeding gums and also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
- Zinc renews various tissues of the body, and also relieves inflammation, restores immunity and has an antioxidant effect.
- Calcium saturates the tissues of bones and teeth.
- Selenium also reduces inflammation and acts as an immunomodulator and antioxidant.
Diet for periodontal disease
It's time to pay attention to nutrition in case of periodontosis. When the oral cavity is affected and painful, a person simply has to watch what he eats and in what form the products get into his mouth.
For example, with periodontosis, it is necessary to exclude from the daily diet the consumption of coffee, black tea and any other drinks containing gases and dyes. It is important to give up sweets, which contribute to the destruction of teeth, the formation of plaque and the accumulation of bacteria in the oral cavity. Also give up chips and cookies.
The patient must follow certain nutritional rules for periodontosis. Thus, it is necessary to eat more solid food, which helps strengthen and massage the gums. Food must be chewed thoroughly. Include as many fresh vegetables and fruits as possible in your daily diet.
Also, do not forget about dairy products, which must be present in food - cottage cheese, sour cream, milk, kefir, sourdough, cheese and others. Such products are full of calcium, which helps strengthen teeth and bones.
In most cases of periodontosis, a balanced diet leads to a speedy recovery. A diet for periodontosis should be followed for at least 6 months until the patient has fully recovered.
We present to your attention an approximate menu of a diet for periodontosis:
- Breakfast – cottage cheese casserole, green tea, carrots or apple.
- Second breakfast (lunch) – cabbage and carrot salad dressed with olive oil, an orange or a few apricots, rosehip infusion.
- Lunch – pea soup, stewed beef with buckwheat, cabbage, tomato and bell pepper salad, juice.
- Afternoon snack – dried fruits, yogurt, fresh vegetables or fruits.
- Dinner: liver cutlets with stewed carrots, cauliflower salad, fermented baked milk.
Drink kefir before going to bed.
Conspiracies against periodontal disease
If you decide to resort to completely unconventional medicine, there are known spells against periodontal disease. So, to stop bleeding gums, wake up at dawn and read:
I, God's servant (name), cast a spell on
my gums and teeth,
So that my gums do not hurt, my teeth do not grieve,
Mother Earth is supported by the sky,
And gums, hold your teeth.
Adam's children's teeth did not hurt,
Eve's children's gums did not grieve,
So my
teeth (name) did not hurt, my gums did not grieve.
The key to my words, the lock to my deeds.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.
A spell to prevent gum pain is read on a new moon over a glass of water. Bring the glass as close to your lips as possible so that your breath is reflected on the surface of the water. After reading the spell, drink half of the water and pour the other half out the window:
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. I walk backwards, not through the forest, not through the garden, Not along the street, not through the alleys, Not through the deserted back streets. I walk, the young moon catches up with me, It asks me, the servant of God (name):
Do your teeth hurt?
They don't!
Do your teeth grieve?
They don't!
God knows my words,
the Angel repeats my words.
My gums do not swell, do not bleed,
They heal from my spell.
God knows my words,
the Angel repeats my words.
As no one from heaven
will get the young moon,
So forever and ever
the disease will not stick to my teeth.
Reverend Antipius, dental healer, Strengthen my words, bless my work. Key, lock, tongue.
