Bilateral dangling foot: causes, symptoms, diagnosis

In contrast to unilateral foot drop, which can be of central or peripheral origin, bilateral foot drop always indicates a lesion of the peripheral nerves or muscles. The onset of the disease can be slow, so that the patient gradually gets used to the change in gait, or acute.

Gait disturbance (dysphasia)

In humans, ordinary "bipedal" walking is the most complexly organized motor act, which, along with speech ability, distinguishes humans from their predecessors. Walking is optimally realized only under the condition of normal functioning of a large number of physiological systems.

Unilateral localized weakness of leg muscles

Unilateral local weakness of the leg muscles is often the initial stage of a lesion that later becomes generalized. This is especially true for, for example, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which often debuts with unilateral distal or proximal weakness; spinal muscular atrophy (rare), polymyositis, and myasthenia.

Symmetrical predominantly proximal weakness in the legs

Symmetrical predominantly proximal weakness in the legs is known as a variant of lower proximal paraparesis (with total paralysis - paraplegia).

Spastic (flaccid paresis) of the lower limbs: causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment

This is a special category of patients with distal weakness in the legs. As a rule, such diseases lead to dysbasia. It is always useful to remember that among the causes of distal lower paraparesis, not only polyneuropathy is known, but also processes at the muscular, spinal and even cerebral levels.

Treatment of walking impairment

In the treatment of walking disorders, measures aimed at treating the underlying disease are of crucial importance. It is important to identify and correct all additional factors that may affect walking, including orthopedic disorders, chronic pain syndromes, and affective disorders.

Walking disorders

Gait impairment is one of the most common and severe manifestations of neurological diseases, which often causes disability and loss of independence in everyday life. Despite its clinical significance and widespread prevalence, gait impairment has not been the subject of special study until recently.

Swollen and hot joints

The term "arthritis" means an inflammatory lesion of one or more joints. Signs of inflammation are pain, swelling, redness of the skin over the inflamed joint, its stiffness; the inflamed joint is hot to the touch (+ general increase in body temperature).

Swollen knee joints (swollen knee)

Swelling of the knee joints may be a manifestation of arthritis. Osteoarthritis tends to affect the posterior aspect of the patella and the medial aspect of the knee, often resulting in varus deformity, and is usually managed with NSAIDs and weight loss measures; sometimes local steroid injections.
