The anatomical and physiological characteristics of the sclera are reflected in pathology.
Exudative and proliferative reactions to harmful effects occur sluggishly and slowly. Inflammatory processes are usually localized in the anterior part of the sclera, between the equator of the eye and the edge of the cornea. Due to the low blood supply, inflammatory processes in the sclera occur sluggishly, and sclera diseases have few symptoms.
In 1962, Dymshits proposed a classification of sclera diseases.
- Congenital anomalies of sclera development.
- Inflammatory diseases of the sclera:
- purulent;
- non-purulent
- Ectasia and staphyloma.
- Degeneration of the sclera.
- Acquired cysts and tumors of the sclera.
