We all want to have healthy and beautiful teeth. And we all sincerely believe that we are making every effort to ensure that our smile shines with health and whiteness. But, as practice showed during the survey and preventive examination, 80% of people do not properly or insufficiently care for the oral cavity. In this regard, 50% of the respondents identified tartar deposits. After processing the results of completing the questionnaire of people with the presence of hardened deposits, it was found out that only 20% of patients are ready to go to the dental clinic for professional teeth cleaning. The remaining 80% preferred to leave everything as is or to fight with the cured coating itself. The Internet is full of recipes for removing tartar by alternative means. And now we will consider the effectiveness of each of them.
Toothpaste as an alternative to tartar
In the line of each brand of oral care products, there is certainly a toothpaste, which, according to the manufacturer, will help not only to whiten your teeth, but also to get rid of such an unpleasant phenomenon as tartar. Is this information true? And what do these toothpastes consist of? To answer these questions, you first need to understand what the origin of the hard plaque is. Dental stone is a natural process of hardening of soft plaque. It consists of mineral substances, fastened as glue by food residues and bacteria. To form a hard coating with soft it takes only two weeks. Therefore, it is very important to maintain oral hygiene. Most often, toothpaste pastes contain a large amount of abrasive substances, which "rip off" the plaque from the teeth. But the problem is that together with the coating these pastes remove the protective layer from the tooth enamel, so dentists strongly do not recommend using this kind of pasta for more than a month. Abrasiveness is indicated by special symbols, namely RDA. Toothpastes with an RDA of less than 100 are common toothpastes for daily use. If the RDA is above 100, then this paste can be called bleaching and helping to prevent tartar. Can a toothpaste with high RDA rid itself of tartar? Concerning yes. For example, pasta with abrasiveness above 200 units with constant use can remove small hard deposits, but only supragingival. Subgingival stones can be removed only with professional teeth cleaning in the dental office. In addition, if you have a large amount of tartar, then even the most highly abrasive toothpaste will be powerless. Similarly, toothpaste to control tartar can contain enzymes, pyrophosphates, splitting dental plaque and elements of active oxygen.
How to choose toothpaste to fight tartar?
When choosing a toothpaste to fight a hardened plaque, you need to pay attention to:
- the level of RDA - the higher it is, the larger the abrasive substances and the quantity correspondingly larger. To effectively remove hard plaque, you need an RDA of more than 100 units, but it should be noted that for sensitive teeth, this figure should not exceed 25 units;
- the presence of fluoride or fluorides - although it is useful substances, but in large doses they act toxic. The indicator of these substances in toothpastes should not exceed 0.1-06%;
- SLS - sodium lauryl sulfate is a foaming agent that adversely affects the body. Ideally, it should be absent;
- the presence of triclosan is an antibiotic, which in theory should kill pathogenic flora, but along with pathogenic it kills also useful "inhabitants" of our mouth, which negatively affects the acid-base balance in the mouth;
- calcium carbonate - used as an abrasive substance, but if it is in the composition next to fluorine or fluoride, then calcium carbonate neutralizes its effect (in fact, such toothpaste is useless).
The bottom line: toothpastes as an alternative to anti-tartar removal work very, very weakly. With the help of them you can remove only a small amount of hard plaque, but it is quite easy to harm the enamel.
Decoctions and infusions as an alternative against tartar
Our alternative medicine can always offer a lot of options for treating all sorts of problems. Cured soft plaque is no exception. After reviewing the literature, we select and analyze several examples of alternative anti-tartar measures.
- Purity, as an alternative against tartar. Sources of alternative medicine say that in order to get rid of tartar, you need to rinse the mouth twice a day with a decoction of celandine. Let's figure it out. The celandine contains organic acids that prevent the deposition of tartar, but their concentration in the broth is so small that it is unlikely to be able to dissolve the already existing hardened plaque. In addition, the celandine is very toxic to the body, it causes inhibition of the central nervous system, so it should be used with great care.
- Burdock root and bean leaf, as an alternative against tartar. Another method of combating hardened plaque, which must be taken internally. The burdock root contains palmic and stearic acid, as well as substances that regulate metabolism. The bean leaves contain allantoic acid, rich in vitamins and trace elements. This alternative means is based on the normalization of the mineral metabolism, so it will not be able to remove the existing tartar.
- Decoction of walnut (its bark), according to alternative medicine, can also cope with the deposition of tartar. For a successful effect, it is advised to make a strong broth and dip a toothbrush into it and brush your teeth for at least five minutes. Perhaps this method would help to cope with the bloom in those times when there were no toothpastes, but now, with the discovery of innovative technologies, this method is ineffective. In addition, the bark of the walnut has a dark color and can be stained with porous enamel.
- Decoction of field horsetail, as an alternative against tartar. According to the opinion of alternative healers, the horsetail field normalizes the mineral metabolism and contributes to a smaller increase in the hard plaque, so it should be taken internally. But in practice, its application, in addition to the diuretic effect, does not produce any other effect. By the way, field horsetail can not be used for people with acute and chronic kidney disease.
- Decoction of linden flowers with baskets of sunflower. Lime blossom is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and sunflower baskets are rich in organic acids. It is because of these properties that such a decoction recommends rinsing the oral cavity at least twice a day. This alternative anti-tartar is not able to remove existing hard deposits, but will prevent the build-up of a new plaque.
Other alternative agents against tartar
In addition to the decoctions and infusions of herbs, alternative medicine suggests using other methods of combating hardened deposits, namely:
- A mixture of lemon juice with a radish. In the opinion of alternative healers, such an "elixir" will quickly remove the hardened plaque. Yes, it contains aggressive acids, so it will actively participate in the removal of tartar, but it will also harm the tooth enamel, removing its protective layer. All dentists unanimously repeat that it is strictly forbidden to brush your teeth after eating fruit, since the enamel becomes loose and very sensitive after the action of fruit acids.
- Application of honey as an alternative against tartar. Honey is very rich in useful substances, has a bactericidal and antioxidant effect. Sources of alternative medicine recommend rinsing the oral cavity with a solution of honey in water (one tablespoon per glass of water). Our view is that eating honey inside will give much more benefit to the teeth and the whole body than such a dubious "product transfer".
- Application of birch sap as an alternative means for removing tartar. Alternative medicine says that in order for a hard coating to disappear, you need to drink half a glass of birch juice at least twice a day. Birch juice is a powerful antioxidant, and it also excellently stimulates metabolism. Apparently this also spodviglo healers to make this product in the means against the struggle with solid sediments. But, unfortunately, as practice showed, birch sap is not able to remove the existing tartar.
Conclusions, on the use of alternative agents against tartar
After analyzing the composition of plants and thoroughly studying their properties, we came to the conclusion that none of the proposed methods for removing tartar with alternative means can not cope as a dentist does with a professional equipment. And sometimes they can even lead to negative consequences in the form of sensitivity of enamel. Therefore, do not waste your nerves and time on such questionable methods, but rather make an appointment at the dental office, where you quickly, qualitatively and absolutely painlessly help get rid of the cured plaque.
