What causes nose pain?
There are many factors that can cause painful sensations in the nose. Among them are the following:
- Nasal trauma;
- Furunculosis;
- Fungal infection;
- Sinusitis;
- Rhinitis;
- Allergic reaction;
- Ganglionitis.
All these causes have different symptoms and ways of manifestation, their treatment also requires the use of various methods. Therefore, let's consider in more detail each prerequisite for "problems" in the nose.
Diseases that cause pain in the nose

Nasal trauma
They say that no one is immune from blows and falls. And it is very easy to get a nose injury, especially often children get them when falling during active games. The nature of the violations can be different:
- Injury;
- Burn;
- Mechanical types;
- Household etc.
When receiving any kind of injury, you will experience difficulty breathing, bleeding, and pain. In order to determine the nature of the injury and prescribe the necessary treatment, the ENT doctor directly examines the injured part of the body, noting changes in the shape and appearance of the nose, possible bleeding. Diagnostics are also possible by prescribing an X-ray if there is a risk of a fracture.
The help prescribed for nasal injuries depends on their nature. In case of a bruise, something cold should be applied to the damaged area. In case of bleeding, a tampon soaked in hydrogen peroxide can be pressed to the nose. However, if it is possible that the nose is broken, contact a specialist immediately!
Furunculosis of the nose
In this case, the skin near the nose will swell, turn red, and after the boil matures, pus begins to flow from it. The pain in the nose is quite strong, it can extend to the temple or forehead. At the same time, the redness and swelling of the skin can spread to the cheeks and lips.
Treatment of the disease consists of applying bandages lubricated with antibacterial ointments, antibiotics, vitamins. However, in no case should you "prescribe" them to yourself. Moreover, squeezing out a ripe furuncle causes even more harmful consequences, because after this, infected blood can get into the brain!
Fungal infection
They most often signal a weak immune system of patients. As a rule, pain in the nose is caused by the following types of diseases:
- Aspergillosis;
- Blastomycosis;
- Histoplasmosis;
- Candidosis;
- Mucormycosis.
All these diseases are caused by certain types of mold fungi. Infections often cause runny nose, changes in voice. In any case, treatment involves the use of amphotericin B, a well-known antifungal antibiotic. Surgical sanitation is also used. It should be noted that, fortunately, histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, rhinoplasmosis are not found in Europe.
Sinusitis
This disease occurs when the paranasal sinuses are inflamed. This includes the well-known sinusitis. With it, the nasal cavity narrows, which makes it impossible for discharge to escape. The pain is then quite intense, it is concentrated in the forehead or mouth.
With chronic sinusitis and sinusitis, the pain in the nose may not be as intense, but it will be accompanied by a headache and, as a result, a decrease in work capacity and productivity. Complaints of a sore throat and pain in the throat may also be expressed.
An ENT doctor diagnoses sinusitis using X-rays or CT scans. After the disease is diagnosed, it is treated with drops that relieve swelling of the sinuses, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial agents. In the most advanced cases, antibiotics and punctures can be used (only for sinusitis).
Rhinitis
This is the scientific name for a runny nose. This disease is quite common, but this does not make it more pleasant. Constant nasal discharge is annoying, appetite is significantly reduced, and constant use of handkerchiefs irritates the skin. Chronic runny nose can lead to more serious diseases, so you should not let things slide. Rhinitis can be treated with special drops, sprays, and foot baths. It is important to drink a lot of tea, warm milk, and watch your diet.
Allergic reaction
Allergies can occur after the substance that causes them gets on the mucous membrane of the nose. They can be accompanied by conjunctivitis, asthma and other diseases. Symptoms in this case will be sneezing, "red eyes", heavy breathing, pain in the nose. Unpleasant sensations can be seasonal, however, sometimes they appear outside of any season.
The doctor diagnoses allergic rhinitis by studying the patient's medical history, collecting information about his condition and environment, since it is very important to remove the allergen in this disease. Treatment, as a rule, involves the use of special drugs - H1 blockers.

Ganglionitis
This disease is a lesion of the nerve nodes. It is accompanied by symptoms such as pain all over the face: in the eyes, teeth, jaw, pain in the nose. They are especially aggravated at night. Treatment includes the use of antibiotics, vitamins, desensitizing drugs. Electrophoresis, massages, diadynamic currents are also sometimes necessary.
What to do if you have a pain in your nose?
Nose pain will definitely be on the list of the most common complaints, however, this does not mean that you should strive to improve this statistic by healing yourself. Contact an ENT doctor who will immediately begin diagnosis and treatment. Be healthy!
