The neck plays so many useful roles in the body that when it hurts, we feel completely helpless. Today - more about neck pain.
[ 1 ]
Why is neck pain so severe?
The neck is a fairly flexible, but very fragile organ that is very tense throughout the working day and even at night when the body is in an uncomfortable position. Therefore, the neck is very vulnerable. There are a lot of nerve endings in it. That is why the neck reacts so sharply to irritants and begins to hurt.
How and why does neck pain develop?
Doctors have dubbed this pain cervicalgia. And a shooting pain in the neck is called something similar – cervicago. When the neck hurts, the pain can radiate to the arm, chest and even the head – that’s how strong it can be.
A shooting pain in the neck (a strong, sharp pain in the form of a shot) can occur and gain strength when the nerve receptors are irritated. The cause of their irritation can be hypothermia in a draft, an awkward turn, overstraining of muscles and vertebrae when staying in one position for a long time.
- This pain overtakes a person quickly, even when he does not expect it.
- Then every movement causes even more severe pain, the person freezes in one position, and the muscles seem to “harden”.
- The most difficult movements for neck pain are in the upper body (especially the chest), and also in the shoulder.
- Even if the pain is relieved with painkillers, the neck may bother you for another 10 days. Then the pain will begin to subside even without simple treatment.
But be prepared for the fact that the average period of relief of neck pain is from one to two weeks. Less often, there is a situation when neck pain may not go away for up to two months. This is already a serious symptom that requires a serious approach to treatment.
What is pain anyway?
This is your body's reaction to irritation of nerve endings contained in tissues and organs. This reaction is a signal of protection against stress, organ failures, chronic diseases, inflammation.
Neck structure and pain in it
The cervical vertebrae are located on the spinal cord. There are seven of them. Between these vertebrae are discs, and next to them are the cervical nerves. They can become inflamed and painful.
There are many different structures in the neck: arteries, muscles, lymph nodes, veins, thyroid gland, trachea, larynx, esophagus. All these organs and systems are interconnected and vital. A malfunction in one of them or inflammation can cause neck pain.
What does neck pain tell you?
That there are big problems in your cervical spine. You need to urgently contact a doctor for an examination as soon as the exacerbation passes. It is unlikely that neck pain indicates other diseases, except for diseases of the spine.
First of all, you need to pay attention to the health of your back and neck.
