The problem of enlarged bones on the feet has been troubling more than one generation. This disease is called hallux valgus, and bones on the feet are its most indicative symptom. Deformation of the big toe dates back to ancient times, and all this time people have been looking for a way to cure it. When the first mentions of this disease appeared and how it can be treated with alternative methods, let's try to find out...
History of the study of bones on the feet
Bunions are considered to be manifestations of a very ancient disease.
The first mention of this symptom dates back to the third century BC. It belongs to Hippocrates, who described the symptoms of this disease with the help of aphorisms: "A eunuch will never have enlarged bones on his legs, nor will he ever go bald. In men, they can appear only upon reaching puberty. In women, such a disease can occur during menopause." Hippocrates also established that heredity greatly affects the appearance of the disease in future generations.
During the reign of Marcus Aurelius, his personal physician discovered enlarged bones on his emperor's legs. Claudius Galen identified the patterns of the disease and called them "licentiousness, intemperance, and heredity." At the end of his life, the famous doctor treated Lucius Septimius Severus himself with a special diet, while forcing him to do special exercises to develop his joints.
He raised many great people "on their feet"! Even washing the bones of the feet with radon waters was used, which was an innovation in medicine at that time. Galen considered a healthy lifestyle, moderate loads on the feet and a properly selected diet to be the main method of preventing and treating enlarged bones on the feet.
Long military campaigns without breaks put enormous strain on the soldiers' legs, but, unfortunately, not every soldier had the opportunity to seek medical help.
To this day, no method of combating bunions has been invented that would give a 100% result. The only thing that can be advised to prevent this joint deformation is not to wear tight shoes, not to get carried away with high-heeled shoes, and to eat right!
Hallux valgus in animals
Did you know that animals also suffer from hallux valgus? However, it manifests itself not only in enlarged bones on their paws, but also in the entire foot deformity. Animals' feet can turn inward or outward, which causes them pain and deprives them of the ability to walk and run normally, and therefore, hunt. Hallux valgus in animals is called clubfoot.
Among domestic animals, such a disease can appear in dogs, cats, cattle and especially in horses. Due to heavy loads during racing, horses greatly deform their feet, which can cause cracks in the hooves, and this is very painful. Deformation of the foot in horses at a young age can greatly change the structure of the joints. Such a horse will not be able to run and walk normally, and we know very well how the owners "dispose" of sick horses!
In cats and dogs, valgus foot deformity can occur due to a lack of vitamin D, that is, due to the development of rickets. Even if you try to correct this with surgery, the animal will never be able to move fully.
Do celebrities suffer from bunions?
When we sit at home in our favorite slippers and watch TV shows about famous people, we always pay attention to the celebrity's hairstyle, makeup, outfit, jewelry, and shoes. We can discuss whether this or that thing suits a person, how many plastic surgeries, in our opinion, he or she has had, and give our assessment of beauty. But hardly anyone has paid attention to the feet of music and movie stars under their shoes. And we are not talking about depilation or pedicure, we are talking about the enlarged bones on the feet of celebrities.
The recognized style icon, the wife of a famous football player and simply a beauty Victoria Beckham has the same problems with her feet as millions of ordinary women. Her bunions are already clearly visible, and no shoes can hide them! Perhaps the reason is the high heels that Vicky loves so much, or maybe it's heredity. Of course, Victoria herself knows better, and we can only think about what she will do with her bunions?
Another famous person is actress Reese Witherspoon, known to us from the film "Legally Blonde", also has problems with her feet. The enlargement of the bones on her feet is still at an early stage, but gradually becomes more obvious and noticeable. Reese's shoes now have a small heel, perhaps she came to her senses and will now take care of her feet.
Famous model Naomi Campbell has broken all records in her bad attitude towards her own feet! A long modeling career, "life on her feet" have borne fruit - Naomi's foot bones are simply huge! They do not fit into shoes, and if they do, they stick out of the shoes. Many paparazzi earn huge money for such photos, and Naomi's rating as the most sought-after model is falling!
Enlarged bones on the legs are a problem for women of any age. It is still unknown how to solve this problem once and for all. Let's put our hopes in modern doctors and be patient!
