Urologists note that frequent urination in men is considered a very common symptom. A normal adult male excretes about 1500 ml of urinary fluid per day, and with this volume, the frequency of urination should be six to ten times. Of course, these data are individual, and are largely dependent on the nature of human nutrition, on the drinking regime, as well as on the overall health status.
With such a complaint as frequent urination, men are not too rushed to the doctor. And completely in vain: in the early stages, most of the diseases that cause such a symptom are quite successful in treatment.
Causes of the frequent urination in men
A number of factors that affect the frequency of urinary urges in male patients are divided into two groups:
- physiological causes associated with the characteristics of food and drink - for example, the total daily volume of urine may increase due to increased amounts of plant foods, tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages (especially beer);
- pathological causes that are caused by the disease and are usually accompanied by other uncomfortable symptoms (pains, cuts, secretions, etc.).
Among the diseases that can affect the frequency of urine output in men, we can name the following:
- Prostatitis is an inflammatory reaction in the tissues of the prostate.
- Adenoma - benign proliferation of prostate tissue.
- Infections that spread sexually (trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, chlamydia).
- Pyelonephritis is an inflammatory reaction in the renal pelvis and ureter.
- Urethritis is an inflammation in the urethra.
- Increased activity (hypertrophied activity) of the bladder.
- Diabetes.
[3]
Risk factors
The risk factors for the increase in urinary output in men can be:
- Age - the risk of frequent urination increases significantly after 50 years of age.
- Family predisposition - in men who have direct relatives with prostate or kidney diseases, there is a high likelihood of getting a similar pathology.
- The region of residence, the unfavorable ecological situation - in areas with increased radioactivity, as well as in large industrial centers, the likelihood of malignant lesions of the urinary system is significantly increased.
- Features of nutrition - the use of mainly meat food increases the risk of developing diseases that lead to increased frequency of urination in men.
Pathogenesis
Every day, the male body normally removes 75% of the used fluid through the urinary device. The rest percent is deduced with kalovymi masses, with sweat, with exhaled air. The number of approaches to urinary excretion in each man may be different, and most of it depends on the amount of liquid used the day before, and also on the abundance of salt in the diet. On average, the daily frequency of urination can vary from 5-6 to 10 times.
Urinary fluid accumulates in the bladder, the capacity of which is normally about 0.3 liters. But this indicator is also unstable: the volume of the bubble can vary, depending on the individual characteristics of the male body.
A healthy man can deliberately restrain urination and control the fullness of the bladder. In emotionally unbalanced people, urination can occur more often, since they have hypertrophied sensitivity of nerve endings localized in the walls of the bladder. In a similar way, the sensitivity of the receptors increases both in the inflammatory process or in supercooling.
In addition, the man next to the urethra is the prostate gland: increasing, it can exert pressure on the urinary organs, causing both increased frequency of urination and difficulty in excreting urine.
Symptoms of the frequent urination in men
If frequent urination is associated with everyday physiological factors - eating habits or drinking fluids - then no additional symptoms are usually observed. With pathologically frequent urination, there may be other complaints:
- soreness, burning when urinating;
- periodic interruption of the jet;
- impossibility to urinate, even if there is a urge;
- additional discharge from the urethra;
- increased body temperature;
- general weakness, fatigue and exhaustion, loss of appetite;
- back pain - bilateral or unilateral.
The first signs in different patients may also manifest themselves in different ways: however, frequent urination usually becomes exactly the symptom with which a man seeks a doctor for help. Nevertheless, there are a number of additional signs and complaints that can bother no less than frequent urination:
- Frequent urination in men without pain is often a sign of a "hyperactive bladder", this condition is usually not accompanied by any additional signs, and is a consequence of brain tumor processes, head trauma, obstruction of the urinary tract, or age-related changes in the bladder.
- Frequent urination in men at night means in many cases an adenoma - a benign tumor in the prostate that presses on the urethra. With this disease, the excretion of urine is weak, sometimes intermittently. In advanced cases, bedwetting is observed.
- Frequent urination in men during the day can be associated with the peculiarities of nutrition and the intake of fluids: thus, the predominance of plant foods in the diet, as well as a saturated drinking regime, always lead to an increase in the urge to urinate. This condition is usually not accompanied by any other pathological symptoms.
- Frequent urination in the morning in men is often considered quite normal if it is not accompanied by other painful symptoms. During the night, a concentrated urinary fluid accumulates in the bladder, and in the morning urge to urinate resumed: the urinary system begins work after an overnight rest.
- Frequent urination in men with pain (in the back, in the groin) is a symptom of urolithiasis. With the progress of urine, stones and sand can also move along the channel, which provokes the appearance of acute pain. In such cases, the urge to urinate is sometimes subjective.
- Frequent urination in men and burning can be signs of urogenital infections or diseases that are transmitted sexually. In addition to burning, there may be resists and pathological discharge from the urethra.
- Frequent profuse urination in men always causes suspicion of diabetes: to make sure of the absence of the disease, you need to pass a blood test for sugar. In addition, you need to keep a record of the fluid being drunk for several days - perhaps the reason is trivial and consists of excessive consumption of various drinks throughout the day.
- Frequent urination with blood in men is a common sign accompanying renal colic, when a stone moving along the urinary tract irritates the mucous membrane, which causes bleeding of the tissues.
- Pain in the lower abdomen in men and frequent urination - in most cases, such symptoms speak of cystitis. The pain is stupid, aching, and only when the process is started - intense and cramping. Also, there may be rubbing, burning, and even incontinence.
- Back pain and frequent urination in men may indicate the development of pyelonephritis. The disease is accompanied by pain in the back, frequent urges, swelling. An important diagnostic value in this situation is blood biochemistry and general urine analysis.
- Pain in the groin and frequent urination in men is observed with prostatic adenoma: the pain in this case is associated with the difficulty of outflow of urine due to compression and curvature of the urethra. Pain is most typical for late stages of adenoma development.
- Frequent urination in men and kidney pain speak of impaired renal function, which can be manifested in the development of pyelonephritis or glomerulonephritis, or in the formation of stones. Kidney pain can be permanent or intermittent, one or two-sided, blunt or paroxysmal.
- The temperature and frequent urination in men are observed with inflammation of the kidneys - for example, with pyelonephritis or glomerulonephritis. The condition is often accompanied by pain in the lower back, fever, increased sweating.
- Frequent urination in elderly men is a fairly common phenomenon, the reasons for which can be many. Age changes can affect both the urinary and sexual systems. Thus, in the elderly, chronic pyelonephritis, prostatitis, prostate adenoma, metabolic disturbances and diabetes are often diagnosed. It is because of this in the elderly that it is recommended that men regularly visit doctors for preventive examination.
- Itching and frequent urination in men can be associated with urethritis - the most common disease of the male genitourinary sphere. Itching usually appears in the early stages of the disease, and at later stages, there are discharge from the urethra and edema. Also, itching can be associated with sexual infections.
- Urine with blood and frequent urination in men are more often associated with prostatitis or other pathologies of the prostate. However, this symptom is considered too serious to presume one or another diagnosis: if urine is detected with blood on the background of frequent urination, it is recommended to carry out diagnostics as early as possible and begin treatment of the initial disease.
- Frequent urination in men after sex happens after prolonged abstinence from sexual intercourse. In such a situation, stagnation of the seed in the tubules can lead to an inflammatory process. As a result, both the prostate and the bladder become inflamed, which leads to increased frequency of urination after each subsequent intercourse.
- Frequent urination in men after semination is also a consequence of hormonal failure. So, the deficiency of individual hormones can lead to thinning of the mucous tissues of the genitourinary apparatus, which, in turn, makes them vulnerable and susceptible to various infections. As a result, the patient "receives" chronic cystitis and other infectious diseases of the genitourinary system.
- Frequent urination in men with diabetes is associated not only with a constant thirst and consumption of a large amount of fluid, but also with the increase in the work of the kidneys, which tend to remove as much glucose as possible from the body.
- Thirst and frequent urination in men are the true symptoms of diabetes: an increased level of sugar in the blood leads to excessive removal of water from the tissues (in this way the body strives to remove excess sugar). The condition can be accompanied by sweating, hair loss, dizziness, a violation of appetite.
- Frequent urination in men with incontinence can be a consequence of prostate cancer. Urinary discharge disorders occur against the background of proliferation of gland tissues. In addition, obstructions, disturbances in the outflow of urinary fluid are detected. Pain, as a rule, is absent.
- Weak frequent urination in men is a common symptom of prostatitis. Because of the swelling of the prostate, the normal outflow of urine is disturbed, so often a man is forced to spend a long time in the restroom to empty a full bladder. In addition, the disease can be accompanied by pain in the groin, a violation of the erection.
- Frequent urination in men after hypothermia in almost all cases is associated with cystitis - inflammation of the bladder. As additional symptoms may act: a slight increase in temperature, the discharge of blood at the end of urination, a rash in the groin area.
- Frequent urination in men and burning in the urethra is the result of penetration into the organs of infection - whether it be an urogenital infection, or a sexually transmitted disease. If the human immunity is weakened, then the risk of developing such a disease increases many times. Especially weakens the immunity of prolonged antibiotic therapy, therefore, with prolonged treatment with antibiotics, it makes sense to take care of an additional intake of funds that maintain a normal microflora in the body.
- Frequent urination on nervous soil in men is called a stressful form of polyuria. Nervous shocks provoke hypertension of urinary organs: smooth muscles contract, pressure on the bladder increases, which is the reason for the urge to urinate. Frequent urination in men with stress can occur after exposure to other provoking factors, such as sneezing, coughing, changing the position of the body, etc.
- Diarrhea and frequent urination in men is an occasion to appoint a number of additional examinations to the patient, as there can be many reasons for this phenomenon: from heart diseases and the endocrine system to digestive tract diseases and chronic intoxications. Sometimes a similar symptom occurs with helminthiasis, with prolonged intake of certain medicines, with the use of poor-quality food.
- Frequent urination in men after alcohol can be caused by several reasons. First, almost all alcohol-containing drinks have a diuretic effect, so frequent trips to the toilet after their use is considered the norm. Secondly, frequent and regular intake of alcohol leads to functional disorders of the urinary organs: for example, chronic alcoholics often have uncontrolled and involuntary urination associated with malfunctioning of the smooth muscles of the urinary system.
Complications and consequences
Frequent urination, first of all, causes discomfort to the man: you always need to keep "closer" to the toilet, including at work, and away, and in public places. And at night, a large number of approaches to the toilet can cause insomnia, fatigue, irritability in the morning, as well as reduced efficiency.
In addition, the lack of treatment in pathologically frequent urination can lead to aggravation of the underlying diseases:
- cystitis can develop into pyelonephritis;
- prostate adenoma - into a cancerous tumor;
- urolithiasis - in an attack of renal colic.
Precisely in order to prevent the development of complications, it is necessary to examine the doctor at the first sign of frequent urination and take the necessary tests.
Diagnostics of the frequent urination in men
Diagnosis always begins with a survey and examination of the patient: the doctor specifies when there were unpleasant symptoms, what preceded them, how they eat and what the patient drinks during the day. Also, questions about the intimate life can be touched upon: the number of partners, the frequency of sexual contacts, the possibility of casual connections, etc.
In addition, other types of research are being appointed:
- Analyzes in the laboratory:
- a blood test that indicates the presence of inflammation, dehydration and anemia;
- blood biochemistry will help to detect kidney problems (the level of creatinine, urea and uric acid is determined);
- urine analysis will determine the presence of protein, blood, mucus in it, and also assess the pH of urine.
- Instrumental diagnostics:
- ultrasound examination of kidneys and pelvic organs;
- ultrasound examination of the prostate;
- bacterial culture of the smear from the urethra;
- computer tomography of the kidneys (usually carried out in cases where a stone crushing procedure or surgery is planned).
Differential diagnosis
Differential diagnosis is performed between diseases of the prostate gland, kidneys, urinary canals, as well as with contagious pathologies that are transmitted sexually (eg, gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia).
In order to distinguish the pathology from the physiological frequent urination, the doctor conducts a urine test for Zimnitsky, which is an assessment of the entire amount of urine in a patient per day. All the received portions of urine are tested for their specific gravity. To determine the exact cause of the pathologically frequent urination, the patient is deprived of the liquid - for a period of 4 to 18 hours, depending on the situation. Hourly take urine for testing, determining its osmolality. This allows, for example, to distinguish polyuria, provoked by diabetes insipidus, from frequent urination, which developed as a result of nervous stress or other causes.
Treatment of the frequent urination in men
Treatment is prescribed according to the discovered cause of frequent urination. If such a cause is not found, then they are limited to general recommendations:
- changes in diet and drinking regimen;
- refusal of alcohol;
- abandonment of individual medicines.
Starting to treat the pathological frequency of urination in men, consider the use of such groups of medicines:
- drugs that affect the pH of the urinary fluid (purify the urinary tract from sand and crystallized salts);
- urological antiseptics (destroy microbes living in the urinary system);
- antibacterial agents (used for infectious diseases and sexually transmitted diseases);
- antiprotozoal drugs (used for chlamydia or ureaplasma);
- antiviral agents (used for viral lesions - for example, with herpes or papillomas);
- drugs-blockers of α-adrenoreceptors (used in prostatitis or prostate adenoma).
If drug therapy does not bring the expected results, surgical treatment may be required. These can be injections of sclerosing agents, medical-diagnostic laparoscopy, sling operations.

Antibiotics for frequent urination in men
Antibiotics for diseases that lead to frequent urination in men are prescribed if there is an infection. These can be preparations of a wide spectrum of activity, or medicines that affect a particular pathogen. Most often prescribed drugs fluoroquinolone series, cephalosporins and penicillins.
The duration of the course of antibiotic therapy can be different: it depends on the form of the disease, its stage, complications, as well as on the overall health and age of the patient.
After the period of exacerbation of the infection subsides, the patient can be transferred to antifungal therapy with nitrofuran series (one of the most common representatives of this group is nitrofurantoin).
Against the background of antibiotic therapy, it is mandatory to treat other drugs, to eliminate spasms, to improve the outflow of urine, to relieve pain. Well-established drug such as Kanefron - it has all the necessary properties to alleviate the condition of the patient with diseases of the urinary tract.

Vitamins
Vitamins are very important for the treatment of diseases of the urinary system in men, because they affect the body in a complex way:
- inhibit the development of inflammation;
- improve kidney function, restoring their function;
- contribute to the rapid removal of toxic substances from the body;
- improve blood circulation;
- strengthen immunity.
Particular attention should be paid to vitamins such as carotene, vitamin E, ascorbic acid, B vitamins, as well as pectins and omega-3 fatty acids.
If you adhere to a diet with the content of these substances, then the positive dynamics will be more clearly traced, and the body will recover faster. Improvement will be felt even by those patients who have serious diseases of the urinary system.
Physiotherapeutic treatment
Physiotherapeutic procedures are included in the scheme of therapy for acute or chronic damage to the organs of urination. The influence of physical factors allows to stop the reaction of inflammation, to weaken spasms, to restore the excretion of urine.
Physiotherapy is not shown to everyone. For example, such treatment is not recommended:
- with exacerbation of pyelonephritis;
- in the terminal phase of chronic pyelonephritis;
- with decompensated hydronephrosis;
- at a polycystosis;
- with malignant tumors.
Complex treatment with physiotherapy can include several options for therapy:
- hydrotherapy, medicinal baths;
- balneotherapy;
- Microwave therapy (not prescribed for kidney stones);
- UHF therapy;
- amplipulse therapy;
- magnetic therapy;
- ultrasound;
- laser therapy;
- electrophoresis with antibacterial drugs.
Most patients are recommended to sanatorium-resort treatment with the use of mineral waters.
Treatment at home for frequent urination in men
If frequent urination in men is found in the early stages of urinary tract disease, then the condition can be corrected at home, simply by observing the correct diet.
The patient needs to limit the use of salt to the maximum in order to reduce the burden on the kidneys. However, it is also not worth completely refusing to use it: sodium chloride is necessary for the body to maintain the water-electrolyte balance.
In addition to limiting salt (up to about 2 grams), there are a number of additional remarks:
- you can not overeat;
- drink about one and a half liters of clean water a day;
- you need to refrain from sharp spices, products with chemical additives (for example, sausages, chips, sweet soda, etc.), from semi-finished products and fast food, from smoked products;
- preference should be given to plant foods, cereals, seafood;
- You can not take alcohol, smoke, take medicines without doctor's appointment.
If you follow all the recommendations, you can cope with such a problem as frequent urination. If the doctor does not mind, then simultaneously you can connect and recipes of alternative medicine.
Alternative treatment
- Take 50 ml of pure alcohol, mix with a raw chicken egg, mix until a homogeneous consistency. Immediately drink 15 ml of the resulting medicine, and after about an hour - as much again. Treatment is not carried out on an empty stomach, so as not to injure the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. Duration of treatment - 3 days.
- On an empty stomach in the morning, drink 15 ml of high-quality olive oil, 25 minutes before the first meal. This is done every morning for 1-1,5 months. During the whole period of treatment it is not recommended to use melons and grapes and apples.
- Take a turn of white cabbage, separate from it a couple of dense leaves. Apply the leaves to the site of the projection of the bladder and fix it with a bandage or plaster. This procedure should preferably be done at night. The leaves are thrown out the next morning. It is recommended to conduct such procedures daily, for five to seven days.
- Some patients take the previous recipe as the basis, however, fresh grated potatoes are added to the cabbage leaf. This compress should be kept on the body for at least five hours. Treatment continues for ten days.
Herbal Treatment
- Take 5 grams of St. John's wort and a thousand-centner, brew in a glass of boiling water. Insist 10 minutes, then filter and drink instead of tea. In the same way arrive three times a day, for a week.
- Brew 50 g of field horsetail in a glass of boiling water, insist for one hour and filter. The resulting medicine is used for sitting warm baths, which are taken daily for 10 days.
- Grate one fresh onion. The resulting gruel is spread on a piece of cloth, covered with gauze on top. Such a compress is applied to the lower segment of the abdomen and fixed, leave for about two hours. Next, the compress is removed, and the skin is thoroughly washed with warm running water.
In addition, it is recommended to drink a decoction of parsley, chamomile tea, sage during the day.
If frequent urination is accompanied by pain and other unpleasant symptoms, independent treatment will not lead to recovery, or, moreover, may cause complications. Therefore, before starting treatment with alternative methods, you need to undergo a full set of examinations with a doctor.
Homeopathy
Frequent urination can occur in connection with various diseases, so in many cases doctors advise the use of complex homeopathic remedies, the spectrum of which is quite wide. Such means are most popular:
- Renel is an excellent remedy for cystitis, pyelitis, increased stone formation in the kidneys, prostatitis. The drug has the form of granules, the frequency of reception and the number of which is assigned individually.
- Berberis gommakord is a drug for eliminating spasms and an inflammatory reaction in the urinary system. The agent is often prescribed for cystitis, pyelitis, colic. Berberis gommakord can be used in the form of drops or injections.
- Populus compositum - eliminates intoxication, improves the function of renal filtration, relieves spasms. The drug is available in the form of drops.
- Solidify compositum - is successfully used for cystitis, nephritis, kidney stones. Relieves pain and spasms, stops inflammation, corrects the process of urination. Solidify compositum is injected.
- Nephronal Edas 128 is a drug in the form of drops, which is used to treat cystitis, nephritis, kidney stones. Nephronal can be used both for the treatment of exacerbations, and for chronic forms of diseases.
Before taking the above funds, you need to consult the doctor in advance, since many drugs are prescribed in individually selected dosages. Contraindications to the use of homeopathic remedies are practically absent: the exception is only an allergy to any of the components of the drug.
Prevention
Preventive measures are relevant only in relation to the pathological frequent urination in men. If frequent urination is associated with the use of a large amount of fluid, then in this case you just need to adjust the drinking regime.
To prevent the occurrence of rapid urination in connection with urological pathologies, doctors advise to pay attention to such rules:
- Do not forget about barrier protection during casual sexual contacts - this will avoid urogenital infectious diseases and diseases that are sexually transmitted;
- you need to adhere to the rules of healthy nutrition - in this way you can prevent the appearance of kidney stones;
- it is important not to abuse alcohol and not to smoke;
- it is recommended to regularly check your body - to take tests, to undergo ultrasound, to consult a doctor about suspicious symptoms.
Forecast
Further prognosis depends on the initial factor, which led to frequent urination in men. Modern methods of treatment can cure even very serious cases of diseases, but, nevertheless, there is no guarantee that after a certain number of years, frequent urination will not resume. Therefore, maximum attention should be paid to preventive measures.
