There is probably no person who has not experienced forehead pain at least once in their life. There are many reasons that create this painful sensation and here are some of the main ones:

Vascular diseases of the brain. Those suffering from, for example, venous arteritis, migraine or ischemic vascular disease experience aching or pulsating pain in the forehead. It often appears together with nausea, vomiting attacks, and loss of coordination. The person becomes temporarily incapacitated, as it is almost impossible to concentrate on anything, talking and moving are very difficult. Symptoms characteristic of intracranial pressure often appear.

Severe pain in the forehead can also manifest itself as a symptom of a bacterial or viral disease. It is observed in the patient along with high temperature and chills during colds, and nausea is added with meningitis. Diseases such as frontal sinusitis and sinusitis always cause pain in the forehead. Sinusitis also causes discomfort to the patient because it affects the sinuses, makes breathing through the nose difficult, smells are poorly felt, and there is an elevated temperature. Pain in the frontal part of the head with frontal sinusitis is especially strong in the morning. It is accompanied by painful sensations in the eyes and fear of light.

When the muscles of the neck and head are tense for a long time, a person strains his eyes and frowns, and he experiences pain in the forehead. People who spend a lot of time sitting at the computer or driving a car for a long time are especially susceptible to such pain.

Forehead pain, stress and nervous tension are closely related. Moreover, the pain is localized throughout the head, lasts a long time and is painful, accompanied by a sharp pulsating pain in the temples. It is sometimes difficult to move the head, since when trying to move, the pain in the forehead only intensifies.

Various head injuries also cause pain:

  • if there is a bruise of the forehead area, when soft tissues are damaged, pain in the forehead appears immediately after the injury, and if there is no suppuration of the subcutaneous hematoma, it disappears after a few days. Otherwise, it intensifies, the forehead is painful to touch, and the body temperature rises.
  • Quite strong pain sensations are formed in the forehead area with a fracture of the frontal bone. In addition, deformation of the forehead is noticeable, attacks of dizziness and vomiting appear, mainly visual impairments occur, sometimes blood comes from the ears.
  • Brain injuries such as a concussion or contusion are accompanied by loss of consciousness (sometimes for a long time), visual impairment, vomiting, weakness of the body and, of course, pain in the frontal area.

Osteochondrosis in the cervical spine often manifests itself in the form of pain in the occipital region, but sometimes pain is felt in the frontal zone (pulling, pressing, shooting or aching). With this disease, pain in the forehead can be provoked by heavy physical exertion, cold, a long unchanged position of the head (therefore, in the morning, painful sensations are felt more strongly).

Painful sensations in the forehead area often appear with diseases of the visual organ: tumor of the eyeball, uveitis, astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, eye injuries.

Often accompanied by pain in the forehead are tumors of the frontal bone; pituitary gland; paranasal sinuses; vascular tumors or those located in the orbital cavity.

What to do if you have pain in your forehead?

Pain in the forehead has many causes. Sometimes it is a consequence of overwork, and sometimes it is a harbinger of pathology. If the pain sensations appeared briefly and once, most likely, tension headaches have manifested themselves and you should just rest. But if the disturbing painful sensations are quite strong and often recur, you should visit a doctor.

Treatment for forehead pain

Pain in the forehead, the treatment of which should be applied immediately, can be a consequence of head injuries, infectious diseases, diseases of the cervical spine, etc. Therefore, in order to prescribe treatment, the doctor must talk to the patient to find out the nature of the pain, its frequency of occurrence, degree of intensity, etc.

If the pain in the frontal part is a consequence of infectious diseases, then the patient is prescribed a course of antibacterial therapy with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. It is not recommended to prescribe drugs to yourself in order to avoid complications that can lead to a worsening of the situation.

If the pain in the forehead is a consequence of stress, depression, nervous exhaustion, then in this case the patient should calm down by taking medicinal herbal tea, drinking tincture of valerian or motherwort, lying down quietly for at least half an hour. Usually the pain quickly subsides.

Pain in the forehead is often a sign of sinusitis or pharyngitis. To eliminate the pain syndrome, you need to see a doctor who will prescribe an opening of the frontal or maxillary sinuses to remove purulent contents.

Hirudotherapy has also proven to be effective in treating this type of pain. Several leeches are placed on the forehead and after some time they are removed. The patient undergoes several such sessions until he feels that the discomfort has ceased to bother him.

Osteopathy is another way to eliminate forehead pain. Only a doctor who has completed special preparatory courses can conduct treatment. Otherwise, you should not risk your health. Usually, 4-8 sessions are required for complete recovery.

Head massage is very helpful in treating forehead pain. The scalp, due to increased blood circulation, begins to receive more oxygen and nutrients, and the pain gradually subsides.

Manual therapy can also help to cope with frontal pain. Treatment sessions should be conducted by a professional doctor who has undergone special training.

Massage of the cervical spine or warming it up will help relieve pain in the forehead caused by osteochondrosis.

If the frontal pain is severe, you can take a painkiller pill as a first aid. However, you should not abuse painkillers - this can only worsen the situation and harm your body.
