Goals of treatment for a deviated nasal septum
Restoration of nasal breathing
Indications for hospitalization
Surgical correction of curvatures is usually performed in a hospital.
Drug treatment for a deviated nasal septum
Non-surgical and drug treatments are usually ineffective and may only provide short-term relief if there is concomitant allergic or vasomotor rhinitis.
Surgical treatment of deviated nasal septum
Depending on the identified type of deformation, an appropriate method of surgical correction is selected (for example, for a C-shaped deformation - laser septum septum or septoplasty using the principles of biomechanics; for isolated ridges/spikes in the posterior lower sections - endoscopic submucosal resection).
Further management
In case of nasal septum surgery, the average hospital stay is 5 days. In the postoperative period, regular nasal cavity toilet is indicated, which is performed either by a doctor (removal of crusts, mucus after anemia using suction), or by nasal showers, which are performed by the patient himself.
Forecast
As a rule, favorable. Technically correctly performed septoplasty leads to restoration of nasal breathing, elimination of other symptoms and cure of concomitant diseases caused by curvature of the nasal septum.
The approximate period of incapacity for work is 12-14 days.
Prevention of nasal septum deviation
There are practically no preventive measures to prevent the development of nasal septum deformities. A potential method for preventing the formation of deformities may be immediate repositioning of displaced fragments of the nasal septum as a result of birth trauma, however, according to the results of the studies, due to the lack of an evidence base, the method has not found application in clinical practice. Wearing special protective masks can be considered a prevention of traumatic injuries to the nose and septum in athletes.
