The cross-linked N-telopeptide of type I bone collagen serves as a marker of osteoclast activity and is used in clinical practice to assess the level of bone resorption, as well as the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment. It is formed by collagenase cleavage of the organic matrix of bone, enters the blood and is excreted in the urine. The content of cross-linked N-telopeptide bone type I collagen in urine is a specific marker of bone resorption. Urine for research is collected 2 hours after 8 hours of fasting.
The N-telopeptide content in the urine rises with osteoporosis, Paget's disease, and hyperparathyroidism.
