Prealbumin is a very sensitive negative acute phase protein - in inflammatory processes its concentration can decrease to less than 20% of the norm. The content of prealbumin also decreases with malnutrition (proteins and calories), cirrhosis, liver failure and chronic liver diseases. With the combination of the inflammatory process and malnutrition, the concentration of prealbumin in the blood serum decreases rapidly and significantly.
