Diseases and conditions in which the concentration of prolactin in the blood serum changes

Prolactin is elevated in:

  • Prolactin-producing pituitary tumors
  • Idiopathic hyperlactinemia (in women - menstrual irregularities and infertility; in men - impotence)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Renal failure
  • Chest injury
  • Trauma, surgery
  • Shingles
  • Use of phenothiazine derivatives, haloperidol, imipramine, methyldopa, high doses of estrogens, oral contraceptives, arginine, opiates, post-insulin hypoglycemia

Prolactin is reduced with:

  • Surgical removal of the pituitary gland
  • X-ray therapy
  • Treatment with bromocriptine
  • Application of T 4
  • Factors causing hyperglycemia
