Diseases and conditions in which the concentration of prolactin in the blood serum changes
Prolactin is elevated in:
- Prolactin-producing pituitary tumors
- Idiopathic hyperlactinemia (in women - menstrual irregularities and infertility; in men - impotence)
- Hypothyroidism
- Renal failure
- Chest injury
- Trauma, surgery
- Shingles
- Use of phenothiazine derivatives, haloperidol, imipramine, methyldopa, high doses of estrogens, oral contraceptives, arginine, opiates, post-insulin hypoglycemia
Prolactin is reduced with:
- Surgical removal of the pituitary gland
- X-ray therapy
- Treatment with bromocriptine
- Application of T 4
- Factors causing hyperglycemia
