Brachimetacarpia is a congenital defect caused by a violation of the differentiation of the osteoarticular apparatus of the hand and is expressed in the shortening of metacarpal bones.
ICD-10 code
Q74.0 Brachymetacarp.
Symptoms of brachymetacarpia
Clinically in children older than 8 years, lag in the growth of metacarpal bones (usually III, IV, V) is observed because of early closure of metaepiphyseal growth zones, determined by X-ray. The brush functions do not suffer, and the main complaint of patients consists in an aesthetic defect in the deformation of the heads of deformed metacarpal bones, which determines the shortening of the corresponding ray as a whole.
Treatment of brachymetacarpia
There are two ways of treatment. First, the defect can be eliminated by lengthening the affected metacarpal bones using a distraction apparatus. The second option is the one-stage osseous plastic of truncated metacarpal bones with a spongy-cortical bone graft from the iliac wing.
