Camptodactyly is a congenital defect caused by a violation of the differentiation of the tendon-muscle apparatus of the hand.
ICD-10 code
Q74.0 Camptodactyly.
Symptoms of Camptodactyly
Either isolated flexion contracture of the fifth finger is observed (in 96% of cases) or combined with flexion contracture of the second-fourth fingers at the level of the proximal interphalangeal joint (in 4% of cases). A small range of motion (30-40°) is preserved due to the imbalance of the flexor and extensor tendons and underdevelopment of the interosseous muscles. When attempting passive correction of the deformity, the flexion contracture of the proximal interphalangeal joint is not eliminated, while hyperextension is observed in the distal interphalangeal joint. The skin pattern on the dorsal surface of the interphalangeal joints is smoothed.
Treatment of camptodactyly
The treatment is surgical and consists of eliminating the flexion contracture of the fifth finger after cutting off the legs of the superficial flexor tendon. If necessary, corrective osteotomy of the main phalanx is also performed.
