Aortitis is an inflammation of the aorta, sometimes leading to the development of an aneurysm or occlusion.
Aortitis occurs in some connective tissue diseases (eg, Takayasu arteritis, giant cell arteritis, ankylosing spondylitis, relapsing polychondritis) and infections (eg, infective endocarditis, syphilis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, fungal infections). Aortitis is a component of Cogan syndrome (inflammatory keratitis, vestibular and auditory dysfunction, and aortitis). Inflammation usually involves all layers of the aorta (inner, middle, and outer) and may lead to occlusion of the aorta or its branches and weakening of the arterial wall, which facilitates the development of aneurysm.
The pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of aortitis depend on the etiology.
