The reference values of the activity of glutathione peroxidase (HP) in erythrocytes are 29.6-82.9 U / g hemoglobin.

Glutathione peroxidase is one of the most important elements of the body's antioxidant system. It turns hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides into harmless molecules before they form free radicals. It is a selenium-dependent enzyme. Changes in selenium concentration in the blood correlate well with the level of glutathione peroxidase activity.

The activity of glutathione peroxidase is determined in the following cases.

  • In patients with diseases associated with glutathione deficiency of peroxidase and selenium.
  • In people with an increased risk of selenium deficiency: in old age, with poor nutrition, smoking, alcoholism, stress, kidney failure, Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, autoimmune diseases, chemotherapy.
  • To determine the antioxidant potential and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
