Urea excretion in urine is proportional to the protein content in the diet, as well as the metabolic rate of endogenous proteins. Urea excreted in urine is approximately 90% of excreted nitrogen metabolites from the body. In adults in a state of nitrogen equilibrium, the release of 500 mmol of urea (or 14 g of urea nitrogen) per day corresponds to the consumption of 100 g of protein.
