Reference values (norm) of activity of creatine kinase in serum: men - 52-200 IU / l, women - 35-165 IU / liter.
Creatine kinase reversibly catalyzes the phosphorylation of creatine. The most rich in creatine kinase is skeletal musculature, the heart muscle, less in the brain, thyroid gland, uterus, lungs. The following diagnostic isoenzymes of creatine kinase are of greatest diagnostic importance: KK-MM (muscle), KK-MB (cardiac), KK-BB (cerebral). Increase in the activity of creatine kinase in the serum is due to the release of the enzyme from the cells when they are damaged.
With myocardial infarction, the flow of creatine kinase from the cardiac muscle to the serum leads to other enzymes, so the definition of creatine kinase has found the widest application for early diagnosis. Increase in activity of creatine kinase is revealed in 95-99% of patients with myocardial infarction. Creatine kinase rises already in 2-4 hours after the onset of the disease, reaching a maximum after 24-36 hours (5-20 times higher than normal). It should be emphasized that the activity of creatine kinase comparatively quickly returns to normal (on the 3rd-6th day).
