The immune system of an adult does not often react violently to substances found in mosquito saliva. But many systems of a child's body are still in the formation stage during the first years of a child's life. One of these systems is the immune system, so doctors are not surprised that the allergic reaction of the body to mosquito bites in children is usually more pronounced than in adults.
It should be said that in childhood, the risk of infection in the wound when scratching the bite site is higher. This is due to the fact that babies are not yet characterized by caution, there are no stable skills for hand and nail hygiene, and the child is not yet able to tolerate itching. Not to mention infants, who can easily turn a microscopic bite site into a large wound, because the words of parents that scratching the skin is not allowed and dangerous mean little to such babies.
While an adult can somehow endure the itch from an insect bite, it will be very difficult for a child to do so, especially given the more pronounced allergic reaction in childhood. The task of parents is to alleviate the painful symptoms of a bite as much as possible. And for this, special means will be needed: pharmaceutical drugs or folk recipes, which many rightly consider safer than medicines.
But how to relieve itching after a mosquito bite in a child without harming the little person? After all, not all medications and recipes that an adult can use for themselves are suitable for children. For example, hormonal drugs should be treated with caution and used only as a last resort, if the inflammatory reaction and itching in the child do not go away after using safer means. In addition, all hormonal drugs have age restrictions. For example, Advantan can be used from 4 months, Akriderm - from 1 year, and most other steroid drugs - only from 2 years, which makes the use of such drugs for newborns unacceptable.
Non-hormonal drugs also have limitations. For example, the relatively safe Fenistil, which doctors recommend for treating mosquito bites in children, is not recommended for newborns in the first month of life. Ketocin ointment is approved in pediatrics only from the age of 1. Other drugs should be used in childhood with caution, carefully monitoring the child's body's reaction to a specific drug.
Parents themselves decide what creams, ointments, gels for itching from mosquito bites to use for their child, but the child's safety should always come first. And in this regard, products intended for use in childhood, i.e. specialized children's products, win.
Children's remedies for insect bites are often produced in the form of balm-pencils. One such is the pencil for itching caused by mosquito bites, with the beautiful name "My Sunshine", which can be used from the very birth of the child. This remedy is recommended by pediatricians for newborns.
After using the balm, the itching disappears within the first 5-10 minutes and does not recur for several hours. If necessary, the product can be safely reused.
Along with the itching, redness and swelling disappear, plantain and chamomile extracts protect and heal the baby's delicate skin from irritation, and mint has a calming effect and cools the skin at the site of inflammation.
According to reviews, baby balm is great for combating the effects of mosquito bites in adults as well. It remains safe even after several applications, which is very important for expectant mothers and people with sensitive skin.
The children's product line also includes the product "Gardex Baby", produced in the form of a pencil or a plaster. It can be used after mosquito bites, jellyfish stings, contact with nettles or to treat sunburn.
The balm contains extracts of chamomile, mint and string, which have a beneficial effect on the baby's skin, help relieve itching, redness and swelling after insect bites, and care for delicate baby skin.
The pencil is used to lubricate the bite site, and the patches are glued to the skin, thereby protecting it from scratching and infection.
The balm for insect bites "Deta" with allantoin, menthol and plantain extract is also available in pencil form and can be used at any age. This hypoallergenic product is well tolerated by most people, which largely explains its popularity and good reviews.
To combat the effects of mosquito bites in children and pregnant women, you can also use the safe herbal preparation "Fladex", which is produced in the form of an ointment. It is not used only in case of increased sensitivity to the components of the product.
Use Fladex 2-4 times a day, applying a thin layer to the bite site and gently rubbing into the skin.
Some people experience a burning sensation when using the product. But this symptom passes quickly and without consequences.
The shelf life of the pharmacy ointment is 2 years, but it must be stored in a cool place at a temperature of 2-8 degrees.
The Moskitol brand produces a spray balm with silver ions or chamomile extract, which can be used after mosquito bites by both adults and children. The Picnic brand also has similar products (the Picnic Baby gel balm with chamomile extract, which can be used for children over 1 year old). And for children aged 2 and over, bite sites can be lubricated with the OFF gel, which contains chamomile and aloe vera extracts and is designed to combat the effects of insect bites.
The product "Vitaon baby" has been specially developed for infants; it cares for the delicate skin of newborns and can be used to eliminate unpleasant symptoms after insect bites.
Of course, the choice of bite remedies for children is less rich than for adults. The same can be said about products that should protect a person from insect attacks (repellents, bracelets, stickers). But the good news is that such products are becoming more and more numerous every year, and products for the little ones are appearing on the shelves.
