Periostalnyi chondroma (synonym: juxtacortical chondroma) is a benign tumor consisting of mature cartilaginous structures and located in the cortical layer of the bone under the period.
The tumor is only 0.66% of the neoplasm of the skeleton and is found in patients of different age groups.
Symptoms of the periosteal chondroma correspond to those of the enchondromas. Difference of a large growth of a neoplasm is visually and palpable determined swelling in the area of the affected limb segment. Typical localization - diaphysis and metadiaphysis of long tubular bones. X-ray and CT determine an eccentrically located (most often subperiosteally in the thickness of the cortical layer) foci of destruction with its surrounding zone of osteosclerosis. Reaction of the periosteum is not typical. Scintigraphy data are similar to those of the enchondromas. Differential diagnosis is performed with a metaphyseal fibrosis defect and a primary chronic form of osteomyelitis.
Treatment of periostal chondroma surgical - marginal resection. With a large tumor size, the resection is supplemented with bone defect plasty.
