Pain in the thigh muscles can appear both as a result of heavy physical overloads and independently of them. The main symptoms are painful sensations (both constant and periodic, often in the morning), which can be accompanied by limited mobility, radiating to the groin area, to the legs. Also, pain in the thigh muscles is often the result of irradiation of pain from the lumbar region in the presence of spinal pathologies.

What can cause thigh muscle pain?

Coxarthrosis of the hip joint

The older a person gets, the more the articular cartilage wears out, as a result of which natural cushioning worsens and severe pain appears. Primary and secondary forms of the disease are distinguished. If the examination did not reveal the cause of this pathology, then, most likely, we are talking about the primary form of the disease. If the cause of the disease is trauma or any pathology, coxarthrosis is considered secondary.

Coxarthrosis develops gradually, at the initial stage there is slight pain in the groin area, as well as aching pain that occurs during walking. As the pathology develops, there is an increasing limitation of mobility in the hip area, and the condition may worsen as a result of physical overload, awkward or abrupt movement. The patient is unable to turn the leg to the side or press it to the stomach, begins to limp, and a crunch appears in the joint. The severity of pain is affected by a sharp change in weather (temperature, air humidity, atmospheric pressure).

Osteochondrosis of the spine

Pathologies of the sacral and lumbar spine quite often cause pain in the back of the thigh, radiating to the buttock.

Myositis

Myositis is an inflammation of muscles that occurs as a result of hypothermia, trauma, muscle cramps, overexertion, manifested in the form of pain and weakness in the muscles. The disease has an acute, subacute and chronic form. In some cases, swelling, compaction, hyperemia of the skin are observed.

This disease is the result of infectious diseases, and also develops in the presence of such pathologies as tuberculosis, diabetes, alcoholism, syphilis, etc. Myositis also appears as a result of being in an uncomfortable position for a long time, for example, when working at a monitor, when driving a car, etc.

Myalgia

The main symptoms of the disease are pain and a feeling of heaviness in the legs, which occurs mainly with inflammation of the arteries. In these cases, pain in the thigh muscles appears, accompanied by pulling or cutting sensations, as well as twitching. Migraine, fever, nausea, and a feeling of stiffness in the joints may occur. The pain syndrome often increases during movement, as well as when trying to press on the muscles, but can also be at rest.

Reasons:

  • Muscle tissue congestion
  • Muscle hypertonicity
  • Injuries, muscle strains, bruises
  • Acute respiratory viral infections, flu, osteochondrosis, arthritis.
  • Emotional stress
  • Hypothermia

Polymyalgia rheumatica

Pain in the thigh muscles is combined with tension, pain in the cervical region, in the shoulder area, pelvis and legs. A clear sign is limited muscle mobility in the morning. It occurs more often in elderly people, but sometimes appears at a young age, for example, as a result of infectious pathologies.

Fibromyalgia

With this disease, pain is felt in the muscles of the thigh and in other parts of the body. Of all the types of myalgia, this is the most common. It often occurs from prolonged hypothermia, emotional and physical overload, injuries, rheumatic pathologies of the body.

For the treatment of any form of myalgia, complex methods of physiotherapy and reflexology, as well as herbal preparations are used. Cupping therapy (vacuum therapy), lymphatic drainage, and acupuncture are practiced.
