Topics of intimate relationships, questions and problems of a sexual nature are no longer taboo and "shameful". In modern society, health is becoming a kind of convertible resource, and normal, harmonious sexual contacts only complement and strengthen this natural capital. Pain during sexual interaction is not just an irritating, uncomfortable factor, it can become a signal of a serious inflammatory process, pathology of the organs of the male or female reproductive system, in addition, pain after sex is one of the reasons for disharmony in a couple's relationship. The English writer, one of those who preferred to write family sagas, John Galsworthy, said about it this way: "If in a family, in a marriage there is no physical attraction in one of the parties, or there are problems in this area, neither pity, nor a sense of duty, nor reason will win, I will not overcome the disgust for intercourse, embedded in man by nature itself."

Causes of pain after sex
In medicine, there is no single nosological definition of pain after sex, it can be called "dyspareunia", "dysgamia", "genitalgia". Doctors use these terms to designate a fairly large list of problems, disorders, reactions associated with the intimate sphere and with various causes.
Both women and men sometimes experience pain after intimate contact, such pain is usually called genitalgia (genitalis - sexual, algia - pain) or postcoital pain. Such pains are multivariant and are a symptom complex, that is, they do not have specific specific signs.
The causes of pain after sex, factors that provoke genitalgia, are systematized into the following categories:
- Somatogenic (organic) postcoital pain, the cause of which may be traumatic, postoperative factors, adhesions, inflammations and other pathologies of the reproductive organs in women and men.
- Psychogenic genitalgia is pain after sex that is not associated with organic pathology. Psychogenic pain can be caused by mental trauma, emotional stress, exhaustion, disharmonious relationships in a couple. Very rarely, the causes of pain after sex are explained by a hidden, unconscious reaction to homosexual inclinations. Also, rarely, a factor provoking a pain symptom after coitus is a mental illness.

- Ovarian cyst.
- Paresthesia associated with the climacteric period - psychogenic genitalgia.
- Psychogenia associated with violence, traumatic defloration, phobias.
- Rarely - anatomical incompatibility, when size still matters.
The causes of pain after sex need to be clarified and diagnosed; to identify and eliminate them, you need to promptly contact a gynecologist, urologist, or sexologist.
What if there is pain and blood after sex?
The reasons why sexual intercourse is accompanied by pain and bleeding may be associated with physiological factors (defloration, mechanical damage) or with pathology of the internal organs of the genital area.
- In women, pain and blood after sex are most often associated with the first sexual relations, defloration and subsequent sexual acts. These are purely physiological reasons, in which the hymen and, possibly, part of the vaginal mucosa ruptures.
- Rough sexual contact is also a mechanical factor of damage to the vaginal walls, often the cervix. If a woman suffers from cervical erosion, intense sexual intercourse may be accompanied by minor bleeding, but there will be no pain, the cervix is simply not able to signal a painful sensation.
- The cause of pain and bloody discharge may be inflammatory processes in the uterus or ovaries, appendages. Cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix), inflammatory process in the vagina - vaginitis, adnexitis, salpingo-oophoritis and other pathologies are accompanied by postcoital pain and discharge containing blood.
- Pain and blood after sex can be associated with dysplasia and even uterine cancer, which develop asymptomatically at the initial stage. The pain symptom is one of the indicators of the neglect of the process.
- Postcoital bleeding and pain can be caused by STDs - sexually transmitted diseases, acute infections of the pelvic organs
- Cervical polyps also often cause pain and bleeding after sex.
- Bloody discharge and some pain can be explained by taking certain medications - acetylsalicylic acid, oral contraceptives
- The cause of pain and blood after intercourse may be hypoplasia of the uterine mucosa associated with a drug factor or inflammatory disease.
- One of the health-threatening causes may be ovarian apoplexy, rupture of the ovarian cyst capsule, which clinically manifests itself in the form of pain, bleeding, tachycardia, a drop in blood pressure and pulse
Pain after first sex
Most often, pain after the first sex is experienced by women, men by this time already have experience of real sexual contacts and do not feel serious discomfort. Statistics say that the ratio of virginity by gender in equal age categories looks like this:
- Women – about 65-70%.
- Men – about 30-35%.
Many doctors and other specialists believe that the main cause of pain during and after defloration is elementary fear and tension. The muscles of the entire body are tense, this prevents the stretching of the rather elastic tissue of the hymen, which is abundantly supplied with blood vessels and nerve endings.
In addition, the following factors are reasons why a woman may experience pain after sex:
- An uncomfortable position in which the rupture of the hymen occurs unphysiologically, painfully. During the first sexual contact, a horizontal position is recommended.
- A gross form of deprivation of virginity is rape, when the mucous membrane of the vulva is torn along with the hymen, and there is a risk of rupture and injury to nearby internal organs.
- The presence of chronic inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs in a woman. Such pathologies provoke painful sensations after the first sex.
- Individual features of the structure of the hymen - density, low level of elasticity.
- Accidental or deliberate insertion of a foreign object into the vagina, i.e. an unnatural form of rupture of the hymen.
- Unprofessional medical procedures.
- Mechanical damage, rupture of the hymen due to pelvic trauma.
It should be noted that not all women experience painful symptoms during and after defloration. This is due to the correct psychological attitude and mutual understanding between partners, individual psychophysiological properties of the woman, a comfortable environment, readiness for the act, a sense of confidence and safety (sex protected by a condom or other means).
Pain can be caused by the following complications that develop in women and men after the first unprotected sex:
- STDs are sexually transmitted diseases.
- Unwanted pregnancy and all associated problems.
- Inflammation of the vagina in women (colpitis).
- Urethritis.
- Cystitis.
Stomach pain after sex
If a woman or a man experiences abdominal pain after sex, it is necessary to try to accurately determine the location of the painful sensations and their nature. The speed and certainty of diagnosis and appropriate treatment depend on this.
Women suffer from postcoital pain more often than men, according to statistics, about 60% of the fair half of humanity experience discomfort after sex to one degree or another. Therefore, the following list of possible causes of pain concerns primarily women:
- Abdominal pain after sex, localized in the lower abdominal part, may indicate an ovarian cyst, especially if the sensations accumulate below, in the side. A cyst is most often a benign formation of the pelvic organs, but it is potentially dangerous due to rupture of the capsule and outpouring of contents into the abdominal cavity (peritonitis). In addition, a functional ovarian cyst is prone to twisting of the stalk, which is also a serious gynecological complication. A diagnosed cyst is not a contraindication to sexual relations, they should simply be limited and a comfortable, non-traumatic position should be chosen. At the first alarming symptoms - sharp pain in the abdomen, tachycardia, a drop in pulse, an ambulance should be called.
- Abdominal pain accompanied by itching and burning is most likely a signal of infectious inflammation, possibly an STD - a sexually transmitted disease. Such a symptom should not be ignored or treated independently, you need to see a doctor, undergo a comprehensive examination, identify a specific microbial pathogen and begin treatment. Moreover, therapeutic recommendations will also apply to the partner, since inflammations of an infectious nature, as a rule, tend to affect both women and men. In addition, a disease treated unilaterally, only in one partner, will recur and neutralize the effectiveness of therapy.
- Abdominal pain after sex, transient, dull, aching pain may indicate a pathological process in the cervix, in the uterus itself, for example, a fibroid.
It should be noted that the list of possible causes of postcoital pain in the lower abdomen is very large; the origin of the pain symptom, the etiology of the underlying disease is a task that needs to be addressed by a doctor.
Pain in the lower abdomen after sex
Painful postcoital pain in the lower abdomen indicates possible diseases of the organs located in this area. Less often, pain is associated with psychogenic factors, which are more likely to manifest as vegetative symptoms.
Pain in the lower abdomen after sex can be caused by the following reasons:
- Adhesions, scars. Adhesions in the intestines can be a consequence of a full-fledged abdominal operation, for example, with inflammation of the appendix. Also, abdominal volumetric surgery can be performed on the occasion of serious gynecological, urological diseases. The tissue of scars and adhesions is inelastic, so sexual intercourse is accompanied by painful sensations in the lower abdomen. The problem can be solved without the use of surgical methods, in the modern pharmaceutical arsenal there are all sorts of drugs with a good resorption effect. Softening of adhesions, physiotherapy, massage, therapeutic exercises and diet therapy give a lasting result.
- Trauma of the sacrococcygeal spine, inflammation of the pelvic tendons. In both men and women, damage to the coccyx, problems with the spine in the lower section can cause pain in the lower abdomen after sex. This is due to tension in the pelvic muscles and increased pinching of the nerve endings.
- In women, the inflammatory process in the pelvic organs is adnexitis, salpingitis, and also the proliferation of the endometrium (endometriosis). In men, diseases associated with the prostate gland. The rush of blood to the lower abdomen is a completely natural phenomenon of sexual interaction, but such an intensive blood supply encounters a pathological obstacle in the form of inflammation of the genital organs, and as a result - pain.
- Violation of venous outflow, venous congestion, which is associated with prolonged abstinence, anorgasmia. Blood flows to the organs during sexual intercourse, but there is no proper adequate outflow (reaction, discharge).
- In men, aching, dull pain in the lower abdomen may indicate pathological inflammation or even a prostate tumor. As a rule, such pain is accompanied by a violation of urination, false urges to urinate and a painful process of urination.
- Painful sensations in the lower abdomen, in the groin in men can signal varicocele. Usually, such pain subsides with movement and intensifies in a static position.
Pain after sex in a girl
Many gynecologists believe that pain after sex in a girl is a completely normal phenomenon associated with defloration, rupture of the hymen. Indeed, according to statistics, only about 30% of virgins do not experience discomfort after their first sexual intercourse, the remaining 70% experience some pain symptoms of varying intensity. Such signs are acceptable for 2 weeks, rarely a month, then they serve as a signal of serious problems in the pelvic organs.
The reason for pain after sex in a girl:
- The hymen does not have a large opening adequate for the penis, and during sexual intercourse it ruptures, which can quite naturally be accompanied by postcoital pain.
- A possible cause of pain may be too active sex for the first time, when not only the hymen is torn, but also the vaginal mucosa is damaged. As a rule, after defloration, it is recommended to take a break for several days.
- Excessive tension, spasm of the pelvic and vaginal muscles, this spastic tension is caused by fears, anxiety and insufficient psycho-emotional readiness of the girl for sex.
- Postcoital cystitis, which is often a complication of defloration. This phenomenon is caused by failure to observe personal hygiene of the partners, as well as the fact that protective means - a condom, vaginal means - were not used during the act. The penetration of microbes into the urethra opened during defloration provokes painful urination, pain and burning.
- Possible presence of cystic neoplasms in a girl; during the first sexual intercourse, pressure is exerted on a previously unmanifested cyst, it either increases or shifts and also presses on nearby organs.
Any pain symptom after the first sexual contacts should not be ignored. It is recommended to visit a gynecologist, undergo a comprehensive examination to prevent possible complications in the form of inflammatory processes, STDs and more dangerous pathologies.
Pain after sex in women
Pain after sex in women, especially those who have given birth, is a serious signal that indicates possible inflammations and other pathologies of the pelvic organs. If in young girls pain after defloration is considered conditionally acceptable, associated with a psycho-emotional factor and the adaptation process, then pain symptoms in older women with experience of sexual life indicate hidden diseases.
The most common causes of pain after sex in women:
- Pelvic pain due to adhesions. Adhesions are pathological connections of tissues of nearby organs, most often caused by surgical intervention (90-95%). In essence, adhesions are dense scar tissue that does not have the necessary elasticity and stretchability. In women, the adhesion process is associated with cesarean section, which is used in cases where natural childbirth is contraindicated or impossible. Over time, almost all adhesions heal and dissolve, if this does not happen, adhesive disease develops, accompanied by many symptoms and pain after sex, including.
- Endometriosis is a common cause of pain after sex in women. The pain is quite severe because the cells of the uterine mucosa (endometrium) grow and penetrate into areas that are not typical for them - the fallopian tubes, ligaments, ovaries, abdominal organs, and bladder.
- Myoma, fibromyoma can also provoke painful sensations after sexual intercourse. Often, a myomatous node develops asymptomatically and only postcoital pain can give reason for examination and its detection.
- Violation of venous outflow, congestion associated with the absence of orgasm. As a rule, with timely treatment of a sexologist, gynecologist, anorgasmia is successfully treated and ceases to be a cause of pain.
- PID – inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs. This is acute salpingo-oophoritis (endosalpingitis, pyosalpingitis) – a pathological process leading to inflammation of the ovaries – oophoritis. Endometritis – inflammation of the basal layer of the endometrium. Pelvi-peritonitis – secondary infection of the abdominal cavity due to penetration of pathogenic agents located in the uterus, as well as due to gonorrhea. Gonorrheal tubo-ovarian formations – pyovarium (ovaries), tubo-ovarian tumor, pyosalpinx (fallopian tubes).
- An ovarian cyst is a benign neoplasm that can grow, become complicated by torsion of the pedicle, rupture of the capsule, and cause severe pain after sexual intercourse.
Pain in the uterus after sex
Since the uterus is the organ that "receives" the penis, many sensations during and after sex depend on its health and elasticity. Almost all postcoital pain in this organ is associated with pathological processes in the uterus, inflammatory diseases or oncology.
Possible factors that provoke pain in the uterus after sex:
Endometrial tumor, also called fibromyoma, leiomyoma, myoma. This is a benign tumor, initially without clinical manifestations. Symptoms may increase after active sex and manifest themselves in the following signs:
- Bloody discharge, bleeding and pain.
- Aching pelvic pain for 1-2 weeks.
- Pain in the lower abdomen, cramping, transient.
- Necrosis of the node, infarction, tissue atrophy causes the typical picture of "acute abdomen".
- The pain intensifies after sex, when the uterus and node are displaced, and the condition is accompanied by painful urination.
- Pain in the uterus and constipation for a week after sex.
- Infectious inflammation of the uterus after medical procedures (cauterization of erosion, abortion, etc.).
- Endometriosis.
- Terminal stage cervical cancer.
- Hypertonicity of the uterus if a woman has sexual intercourse while pregnant.
- Uterine displacement, all types of uterine inversion.
- Polyps that may bleed after sex.
- Hyperplasia of the uterine lining.
- Inflammation of the endometrium – endometritis. The pain is acute and may be accompanied by an increase in body temperature.
Ovarian pain after sex
What can cause pain in the ovaries after sex?
- Inflammation of the appendages and ovaries - adnexitis. Postcoital pain symptom is especially characteristic in acute adnexitis. The pain spreads along the lower abdomen, radiates to the lower back, can be quite long and cause serious discomfort.
- Inflammation of the appendages - oophoritis. Pain in the ovaries after sex, caused by oophoritis, is short-term but very sharp, and can cause a transient feverish state, subfebrile body temperature.
- Cysts of various types. As a rule, a small cyst does not interfere with sex, but if its size exceeds 4-5 centimeters, it provokes postcoital pain.
- Torsion of the ovarian cyst stalk. Follicular and luteal cysts (functional cysts) are especially dangerous in this regard, since these formations have long, rather thin and vulnerable stalks, prone to torsion. The ovary may hurt for a long time after sex, during which time tissue necrosis and atrophy develop.
- Apoplexy, rupture of the ovary with hemorrhage into the peritoneum. This condition is provoked by rough, intense sex, as well as inflammation of the ovarian cyst, which can burst during any sexual intercourse, even short-term.
- A large tumor located on the right or left ovary.
It should be noted that a cyst of the right ovary can manifest itself with postcoital pains similar to the clinical picture of appendicitis. That is why, if repeated pain symptoms appear, a woman should immediately seek medical help.
Headache after sex
Postcoital headache (after sex) is worthy of a description in a separate article, as its manifestations are so diverse, its etiology and mechanisms of development, pathogenesis are interesting.
There is a legend that the first known person to suffer from a headache after sexual intercourse was the great Renaissance artist Raphael. He satisfied his needs too actively, and his next stormy adventures ended in a vascular catastrophe, which led to death. The cause was apparently intense arousal and excessive stress on the cardiovascular system. In addition to excesses, headaches after sex can also occur due to dissatisfaction. Postcoital cephalgia has the following symptoms:
- It has a squeezing, rarely pulsating character.
- Most often it is localized in the forehead or back of the head.
- Sudden development, not associated with other etiological causes.
- The typical route of spread is from the back of the head to all other areas of the head (crown, forehead, temples).
- Absence of irritating reactions to sounds, light, smells as with migraine.
The pain is caused by vascular dystonia or vertebrobasilar insufficiency, a sharp jump in blood pressure, a hormonal "explosion". Another factor that provokes cephalalgia is the biochemical process that occurs during the act. Orgasm or its absence is accompanied by intense, active activity of the sympathetic nervous system, when the heart rate reaches 180 beats per minute, breathing quickens, systolic blood pressure increases, all skeletal muscles tense up. Such a "shake-up" can be incompatible with the resource state of the man's body and lead to a headache.
Pain in the side after sex
Localization of postcoital pain in the side in women is a typical symptom of an ovarian cyst. Also, the reason for which pain in the side develops after sex can be inflammation of the appendix, then the pain is localized on the right.
As for cystic formations, the most common types of cysts are asymptomatic, since 60% of them are physiological - corpus luteum cyst, follicular cyst. Many people know that physiological cysts are safe and can resolve on their own. However, sexual intercourse can disrupt this process and provoke either an increase in the cyst, or a twisting of its stalk (this is especially typical for a follicular cyst), or a rupture of the capsule, ovarian apoplexy. All complications associated with a cyst are a serious threat not only to a woman's health, but sometimes to her life.
Also, pain in the side can be caused by an inflammatory process in the pelvic organs, most often adnexitis.
Severe pain in the side after sexual intercourse may be associated with the anatomical specifics of the uterus - a bend, such pain is especially characteristic of lateroflexion of the uterus, when it is displaced to the side due to the adhesion process in the peritoneum.
In men, postcoital pain in the side is most often caused by stones in the ureter, which may not bother or manifest in the absence of sex. Muscle tension in the pelvic organs causes shifts of sand and small stones, they can block the narrowed urethra and provoke pain in the side.
The factors that cause pain in the side after sex are varied and require careful diagnosis by a doctor. You cannot tolerate the pain symptom, as this can lead to threatening consequences - peritonitis (ruptured cyst, appendicitis), chronic inflammation and even oncology.
Pain in the groin after sex
Inguinal postcoital pain is most often associated with chronic or acute inflammatory processes in the genital organs. Sexual contact causes a rush of blood to the pelvic organs in women and the genitals in men; if pathology develops in them, the blood flow is disrupted and additional blood supply only increases the symptoms.
Pain in the groin after sex in women:
- Almost all inflammations of the pelvic organs - uterus, appendages, ovaries. This may be adnexitis (appendages and ovaries), salpingo-oophoritis, parametritis. Pain after sex is usually acute, sharp, but quickly passing, possibly an increase in body temperature, abdominal pain upon palpation.
- A ruptured ovarian cyst is also accompanied by pain in the side, lower abdomen, and groin area.
- Inflammation of the appendix is a typical clinical picture of "acute abdomen".
- An ectopic pregnancy, which is accompanied by severe pain in the groin, radiating to the rectum. Rupture of the fallopian tube is a threatening complication, the pain becomes unbearable, up to loss of consciousness.
- Colpitis.
- Endometritis.
- Cystitis.
- Varicose veins of the pubic symphysis area.
Pain in the groin after sex in men:
- Vesiculitis is an inflammation of the seminal vesicles of infectious etiology.
- Excessive sexual activity, which disrupts the rhythm of blood circulation (more often a rush of blood than an outflow).
- Long-term sexual abstinence, which is also the cause of circulatory disorders in the organs (no influx, stagnation of outflow).
- Infectious inflammation of the urethra - colliculitis, especially in combination with venous congestion.
- Urethritis.
- Herpes virus.
- Prostatitis.
- Epididymitis is an inflammatory process in the epididymis.
Pain in the groin after sex should be differentiated by clear localization and character. In men, signs of specific diseases may be the following descriptions:
- Pain radiating to the groin is an infectious inflammation of the ureter.
- Pain in the suprapubic area radiating to the groin – inflammation of the bladder.
- Bilateral pain in the perineum, radiating to the scrotum - inflammation of the prostate gland, inflammation of the seminal vesicles.
Back pain after sex
Back pain after sex is most often caused by underlying diseases of the spinal column, that is, back pain after sex is just another symptom of an old disease. It is possible that sexual intercourse provokes an increase in symptoms, this is explained by the natural tension of the back muscles, especially in the lumbosacral spine.
In addition, back pain after sex can be caused by the following reasons:
- MBS – myogenic pain syndrome. Disruption of neural connections with skeletal-muscular tissues due to frequent forced static position (sitting at a table, driving, etc.) provokes degeneration, atrophy of many muscles, intervertebral discs, etc. Pinched nerve endings, possible intervertebral disorders (hernias, protrusions) are the causes of back pain. Sexual contact only intensifies the pain, which can be the first sign of serious complications.
- Osteochondrosis is a problem of civilization and one of the causes of pain after sexual intercourse, and the symptoms can appear in both women and men.
- In men, a factor that provokes back pain after sexual intercourse may be a latent course of prostatitis. The prostate gland itself does not hurt, but the intense load on the spine, muscle tension causes severe pain that radiates to the back.
- Hidden kidney pathologies. Often, the latent course of the disease does not manifest itself clinically, but an active sexual life can cause a more intense course of the disease and provoke its exacerbation.
- In women, back pain after sex can be caused by almost any inflammation of the pelvic organs. It is believed that inflammation of the uterus, cervix, tubes is vocalized in the lower abdomen, but often the pain radiates to the sacrum and back.
- Back pain in women can be caused by adhesions. The pain symptom is usually localized in the lower abdomen and radiates to the lower back.
To ensure that back pain after sexual intercourse does not become an obstacle to continuing intimate relationships, you just need to prevent it:
- Choose the most comfortable position. If a person spends most of the time sitting on a chair at an office desk and this body position is “familiar” for the spine, then sexual intercourse will not cause discomfort if it takes place in a similar position.
- Positions that may cause your back to bend should be avoided.
- You shouldn't have sex lying on your stomach. This puts extra strain on your back muscles.
- Sex with straight-legged bends can cause excessive tension and stretching of the sciatic nerve.
- Use your hands to support yourself during sex, this will relieve excess strain on your back and help avoid postcoital pain.
- The partner who does not suffer from back pain should be more active during sex, this should be agreed upon in advance.
- Active sex with abrupt body movements is not recommended. Orgasm can be achieved at a slow pace, and this will also help neutralize the pain after the act.
Lower back pain after sex
Back pain after sex is a complaint of many people who have reached a certain age and have problems with the musculoskeletal system. To prevent osteochondrosis, radiculopathy, intercostal neuralgia from becoming a reason for refusing intimate relations, it is necessary not only to treat the underlying disease in time, but also to agree with the partner in advance on a comfortable position.
Doctors advise to limit or eliminate sex during periods of exacerbation of musculoskeletal diseases until remission. There are also several tips that help eliminate lower back pain after sex:
- If a woman has lower back pain, her position during intercourse can be any, except horizontal, when additional stress on the sacrum is caused by both the partner’s weight and the rhythmic movements of his body.
- The most acceptable position for back pain is the knee-elbow position. This position helps to minimize the painful postcoital symptom in the lower back in both women and men.
- If the pain in the lower back after intercourse is dull, aching, and lasts for a long period, it may indicate chronic pyelonephritis, urolithiasis, and other kidney diseases. Seeing a doctor will help reduce the likelihood of serious exacerbations and worsening of symptoms.
- Postcoital pain radiating to the lower back in women may indicate a chronic or acute inflammatory process in the appendages, or endometriosis.
- Postcoital lower back pain in men can be caused by developing prostatitis, when the pain is not obvious, but tends to radiate to the lumbar spine.
- Despite all the joys, sex can actually contribute to the exacerbation of many chronic, latent organic processes localized in the lumbosacral region.
Tailbone pain after sex
Pain in the coccyx is called coccygodynia, it has its own etiological grounds, not directly related to sexual intercourse. However, pain in the coccyx after sex is often found among the subjective complaints of patients in the sexologist's office, especially women. Coccygodynia is considered more of a female symptom complex than a male one. This is due to the specific mobility of the coccyx and the anatomical features of the female body. The condition of the coccyx is important in the normal physiological state of a woman, during childbirth the coccyx can become a kind of "accelerator" for the exit of the raft, during sexual intercourse the coccyx supports the cervix (sacral-uterine ligament).
The pain is paroxysmal, radiates to the rectum, increases with movement, and can manifest itself as a separate symptom when trauma or damage to the coccyx occurred long before the pain appeared. The pelvic tissue, the rectum, which can be inflamed, and the pelvic muscles begin to hurt due to any sexual intercourse, both short, classic, and intense, sometimes rough. Thus, sex is a kind of trigger that starts the pain mechanism in the coccyx.
In addition to hidden, long-standing trauma to the coccyx, postcoital pain in this area can be caused by the following reasons:
- Anal abscess, rectal abscess. Its symptoms may not appear for a long time and manifest after sex. Signs that may indicate a rectal abscess:
- Pain in the tailbone after sexual intercourse, the pain is aching and pulling in nature.
- A slight swelling in the anal area, in the coccyx area.
- Painful bowel movements after sex.
- Increased body temperature.
- Retrocervical endometriosis, when the endometrium grows into the rectal area.
- Rough anal sex, which causes tissue and pelvic floor muscles to become injured and inflamed.
- Dermoid cyst of the coccyx. This cause is rare, as dermoid in the lumbosacral region is usually diagnosed in infancy or early childhood.
- Pathological childbirth, after which the muscles and pelvic bones have not yet recovered, and the coccyx, as the most mobile lower part of the spine, has suffered the most. Any premature sex, started in violation of the recommendations for a two-three week abstinence, can provoke pain in the coccyx after sex
Chest pain after sex
Breast pain after sex, postcoital mastalgia, is often taken by women as a sign of pregnancy. This is, of course, a myth, unless the pain appears several weeks after intercourse, which is extremely rare and is unlikely to have a causal relationship with sex.
Here is a list of possible causes that can cause chest pain after sex:
- Tingling, pain in the chest, its enlargement can be directly related to the rhythm of the menstrual cycle. At the very beginning, such symptoms are quite normal, caused by some fluid retention in the body, changes in hormonal levels, and most often have little to do with sexual contact.
- Breast pain after sex may be a sign of developing mastopathy. Small diffuse compactions may not cause symptoms, but during active, passionate sexual intercourse, when the mammary glands are exposed to natural mechanical action (partner's hands), the nodules may hurt. Diffuse, nodular mastopathy is a serious disease in terms of malignancy. Simple postcoital pain should not be ignored, even if it subsides over time.
- Pain during and after sex may be caused by infections that cause mastitis.
- Hormonal "storms" associated with orgasm are the most common cause of chest pain after sex.
- Trauma to the chest during rough sex, blow, bruise.
- Breast cyst, cystic mastopathy.
- An oncological process in the breast that usually does not manifest itself symptomatically and causes pain during or after sexual intercourse only in the later stages.
- Inflammation and enlargement of the lymph nodes of infectious etiology.
- Insufficient sexual maturity. Such pain in the chest after sexual intercourse is associated with the ongoing maturation process of a young woman and hormonal instability. Sexual contact activates hormonal surges and provokes a rush of blood and lymph to the genitals and chest.
Vaginal pain after sex
Vulvovaginal pain (vulvar pain) or vulvodynia is a symptom complex that has multiple causes, including tumors, injuries, sexually transmitted diseases, and inflammation.
Pain in the vagina after sex most often develops rapidly, as it is caused by the process of sexual intercourse itself, the pressure of the penis on the uterus, ovaries, and nearby organs. There are also delayed types of pain that are associated with chronic pathologies, neglected latent processes.
The causes of vaginal pain symptoms that develop after sex can be various diseases of the pelvic organs, among which the following are common:
- Endometriosis.
- Pain in the vagina after sex during menopause, caused by dryness - atrophic vaginitis. Dryness provokes pain both during and after intercourse, often the pain symptom is accompanied by severe burning and itching.
- Non-specific colpitis is an inflammatory process of infectious etiology, expressed in itching, discharge (leucorrhoea), painful sensations during and after sex, dysuria, and swelling of the vaginal walls.
- Bartholinitis - pyobartholinitis, that is, a purulent inflammatory process in the Bartholin gland. Most often, this is an inflammation associated with gonococcus, staphylococcus, trichomonas. Blockage of the gland duct provokes an abscess and pain with any contact with the genitals, including during sex. After sexual intercourse, there may be acute, quickly passing pain, which indicates mechanical opening of the abscess.
- Adhesive process, postcoital pain with adhesions is typical if the partners used positions with maximum deep penetration.
- Postcoital pain of an acute nature, with a feeling of strong pressure in the rectum, fever, and a drop in pulse may be a symptom of a ruptured ovarian cyst capsule.
- Vaginismus is a pathological muscle spasm that interferes with a woman during and after sexual intercourse, causing pain associated with:
- Candidiasis (thrush), when pain after sexual intercourse is accompanied by itching and burning in the vagina.
- Ureaplasma infection.
- Leukoplakia is an atrophy of epithelial cells, kraurosis is a rough keratinization of the mucous membrane of the vulva. This is a serious disease prone to malignancy. Sexual intercourse provokes severe itching and pain.
- Psychogeny. The psychoemotional factor, which women are so susceptible to, can cause pain in any location. This is due to fear of sexual intercourse or rejection of the partner, with traumatic sexual experience (violence) and other reasons. Often, vaginal pain after sex is caused by a phobic expectation of pain, and not by real factors.
Symptoms of pain after sex
To clarify the symptoms of genitalgia and dyspareunia, it is necessary to specify the following signs:
- Where are the symptoms of pain after sex localized - abdominal area, lower back, genitals directly, other.
- Manifestation symptoms, beginning.
- Differentiation between actual pain and itching, burning, and other sensations.
- Pain characteristics: sharp, dull, aching, stabbing, cramping.
- The prevalence of symptoms, whether there is one painful area or the pain is diffuse.
- Association of pain with specific circumstances, person, environment, situational pain or generalized symptoms.
- The connection between pain and the position of sexual intercourse.
It should be noted that the symptoms of pain after sex are similar to the clinical picture of the underlying, provoking disease, pathology and can be as follows:
Floor | Symptoms | Possible reasons |
Women | Mild, transient pain in the lower abdomen | Ovulation, pain is typical for the middle of the cycle, the period of the release of the egg from the follicle |
Pain and bleeding | Cervical pathologies
Transient aching pain, acute pain radiating to the lower back, to the abdominal area. The pain is associated with a certain position during sex | Adhesions
Pain radiating to the sacrum, to the back (right, left) | Inflammatory process in the appendages
Diffuse pain in the lower abdomen, pain with blood | Inflammation of the endometrium
Pain and itching after sex, accompanied by white discharge (leucorrhoea) | Infectious process in the vagina
Acute pain, drop in blood pressure, cyanosis, acute abdomen clinical picture | Rupture of ovarian cyst capsule, torsion of cyst stalk, ovarian apoplexy
Acute, spasmodic pain that quickly passes, but then recurs in the form of aching sensations, the abdomen increasing in size after sex (muscle tension) | Myoma, fibromyoma
Itching, burning, pain, cheesy discharge | Candidiasis
Pain in the lower abdomen accompanied by painful urination | Postcoital cystitis |
In addition to somatic pain, women most often experience pain of a psychogenic nature (psychogenic dyspareunia). Patients quite vividly describe the nature of the pain symptoms - cutting, sharp, dagger-like pain, a feeling of unbearable burning, itching, crawling of small ants, nausea and spasms of the larynx, up to vomiting.
The symptoms of pain after sex are extremely important in the diagnostic sense, the symptoms of postcoital genitalgia should be differentiated from psychogenic factors (hysterical neurosis, hypochondriacal syndrome). In addition, pain symptoms after sex may not be associated with pathology of the genitals, but are caused by diseases of the genitosegmental apparatus (nearby organs and systems)
Sharp pain after sex
Sharp pain after sex indicates, first of all, an injury to an organ, tissue, or an exacerbation of a disease of the internal organs. Any acute symptom requires immediate medical attention, such a phenomenon as a ruptured cyst, ovarian apoplexy, renal colic can not only threaten health consequences, but also lead to death. Sharp pain after sex is a signal of the following diseases and conditions:
- Ovarian apoplexy.
- Pelvic neuralgia.
- Herniated disc.
- Rupture of the ovarian cyst capsule.
- Torsion of the ovarian cyst pedicle.
- Ectopic pregnancy.
- Gonorrhea.
- Vaginitis.
- Internal bleeding.
- Rupture of the vaginal wall.
- Postcoital acute cystitis.
- Coital headache, with potential risk of aneurysm rupture.
- Obstruction of the excretory ducts.
- Renal colic.
Sharp, persistent pain after sex is a direct indication to call an ambulance; sometimes the underlying causes of the pain symptom can be so serious that every minute counts.
Severe pain after sex
Pain after intercourse can vary in intensity. Severe pain after sex is most often associated with the following reasons:
- Men
- Intense sexual intercourse can lead to a tear of the frenulum of the penis.
- Severe pain often accompanies exacerbations of STDs – sexually transmitted diseases, including gonorrhea.
- Sex can provoke an exacerbation of infectious inflammation of the prostate gland.
- Inflammation of the seminal vesicles.
- Inflammation of the bladder of infectious etiology (purulent).
- Postcoital pain syndrome associated with urethritis, balanitis.
- Women:
- Postcoital cystitis.
- Defloration (rupture of the hymen).
- Postpartum trauma, where tears and scar tissue can cause severe pain.
- Fibromyoma.
- Ovarian cyst.
- Endometriosis (spotting).
- Adhesive process.
- Vulvodynia.
- Ectopic pregnancy.
Severe pain after sex can be transient, short-term, then it is clearly associated with a situational factor - an uncomfortable position or too active sexual contact. If the pain does not go away within a few hours, you should consult a doctor, since such a symptom may indicate a serious pathology, condition.
Nagging pain after sex
The pulling nature of pain in a woman after sex is clearly due to the condition of the uterus and its cervix. Pulling pain after sex can be associated with stimulation of the uterine muscles and its atypical contraction. Thus, temporary pain sensations are not pathological, they can be considered a direct consequence of the process of sexual contact, the depth of penis penetration, the rhythm and tempo of the act, as well as anatomical parameters - compatibility of the genitals.
In addition, nagging pain after sex is associated with the following reasons:
- Insufficient discharge, reaction or absence of orgasm. During intercourse, blood flows to the vagina, lower abdomen, but there is no adequate outflow.
- The cause of pulling pain may also be venous congestion in the pelvic organs, which causes endometriosis, fibroids, and ovarian dysfunction.
- A nagging postcoital pain may be a consequence of the adhesion process in the pelvic organs. In turn, adhesions are caused either by an inflammatory process or are a complication after surgery.
- Endometriosis, which is especially evident before the onset of the menstrual cycle. If sexual intercourse occurred during this period, then nagging pain is a characteristic sign of endometrial proliferation.
It is believed that nagging pain is a sign of chronic pathology, thus, sex can be a provoking factor that increases the manifestation of the symptoms of the disease. If nagging pain is repeated, it is necessary to undergo a comprehensive examination in order to detect the disease in time and begin its treatment.
Sharp pain after sex
Reasons that provoke acute pain symptoms after sexual intercourse:
- Hemorrhage, ovarian apoplexy. Rupture of the cyst often occurs after intense physical exertion or active sex. Apoplexy is characterized by severe, sharp pain radiating down into the rectum, dizziness, nausea, a drop in blood pressure and pulse. Such acute pain after sex requires urgent medical attention.
- An ectopic pregnancy with contractions, usually preceded by a delay in menstrual flow. The condition also requires calling an ambulance.
- Acute pain after sex, radiating to the groin area, vagina, lower back often indicates a rupture of the cyst capsule. The pain may be cramping.
- Interstitial cystitis is a "honeymoon" disease, when a woman's vagina is very vulnerable to various microbial infections that enter the urethra.
- Severe contraction of the uterus due to disruption of the hormonal system.
- Clitoral adhesions.
- Uterine retroversion.
- Postcoital headache associated with a sharp rise in blood pressure.
- Inflammation of the cervix - cervicitis. Causes of cervicitis can be traumatic, inflammatory, or STDs
In men, severe postcoital pain is most often associated with an inflammatory process in the genitals or prostate gland.
Pain after sex during pregnancy
Pain in a pregnant woman having sex is often associated with completely natural causes - changes in hormonal levels, restructuring of the entire body, including the pelvic organs, or a psychogenic factor when the expectant mother fears for the health of the fetus.
In addition, pain after sex in pregnant women is explained in this way:
- During the first two trimesters, the uterus of a pregnant woman contracts continuously. During sexual intercourse, it contracts most intensely, much more actively than in a non-pregnant woman. Contractions can cause transient pain.
- In a pregnant woman, the outflow of blood after orgasm occurs at a slow rate, which can provoke stagnation, muscle tension and pain.
- A pregnant woman, especially in the first trimester, is characterized by increased anxiety and unstable emotional state. Fears and worries about the baby's health can cause postcoital psychogenic pain.
- If a woman suffers from toxicosis, is weakened, tired, but still agrees to sexual intercourse without desire, then it is quite natural that she will not achieve discharge, orgasm. Pain can be a consequence of such a condition.
- Venous congestion, which often accompanies pregnancy, swelling of the entire lower body, can be the cause of pain after sex during pregnancy.
When a pregnant woman should not have sex:
- If the partner is a carrier of an STD.
- Threats of miscarriage.
- History of previous miscarriages and premature births.
- Discharge of amniotic fluid (leakage).
- Low placenta previa. Sex can cause placenta abruption.
- Bleeding, bloody discharge.
As a rule, in the last trimester, pain associated with sexual intercourse disappears, the woman becomes more active, her sexual desire is restored, and correct, adequate intimate relations bring only pleasure, not pain.
Pain during sex after childbirth
After the happy moments of the baby's birth, after a period of adaptation to life as a threesome - mother, father and child, parents again strive for intimate relationships, often forgetting about caution. Pain after sex after childbirth can be provoked by the following reasons:
- Painful scar seals after ruptures. Such sutures heal no earlier than 4-6 months, during which time sexual intercourse may be accompanied by pain to varying degrees. The pain can be relieved with the help of special medicinal ointments that dissolve the scar, as well as with the help of adequate sexual positions that do not injure the vagina.
- Lack of vaginal lubrication, dryness. This condition is transient and is considered relatively physiological, since the woman's body has not yet "woke up" in the hormonal sense. Dryness can last until the normal menstrual cycle is restored. The problem is solved simply - lubricating substances, lubricants.
- Pain can be caused by too early sexual intercourse, before lochia discharge has ceased. Lochia can be discharged for 3-4 weeks, sometimes longer. During this time, it is necessary to abstain from intimate relations to avoid infection, inflammation, endometritis. In the old days, submissive women unquestioningly obeyed the desire of a man and had sexual intercourse literally a few days after childbirth. This led to a high mortality rate from the so-called "childbirth fever".
- Pain after sex after childbirth may be associated with the natural process of contraction of the uterus, which seeks to return to its previous size.
- Pain can also be caused by postpartum salpingo-oophoritis or adnexitis.
Statistics show that about 50% of women in labor experience pain during or after sex for 3-4 months, and another 20% of women experience pain symptoms for a year. Most often, pain is provoked by difficult childbirth, when an episiotomy is performed on the perineum, stitches are applied, that is, there is an obstacle in the form of scar tissue. In addition, the vagina itself changes its configuration after the stitches, the mucous membranes become vulnerable and sensitive. This is why it is important for partners not to rush and begin sexual relations only after the woman's body has fully recovered.
Pain during sex after cesarean section
Pain during sex after a cesarean section is quite understandable, because the woman has undergone, in fact, a difficult abdominal surgery, accompanied by the imposition of extensive, deep stitches. The recovery process after a cesarean section takes at least a year, but this does not mean a year of abstinence from sex. Partners just need to be extremely careful, choose comfortable positions that are low-trauma for the peritoneum and scar tissue in particular. The uterus of a woman who has undergone such an operation contracts longer than after a normal birth. Therefore, pain during sex after a cesarean section can accompany a woman for up to six months. The pain is cramping in nature, but it is most often transient. Also, a lack of estrogen, which is a typical syndrome after childbirth, affects a woman's fertility. Women in labor do not feel the desire to enter into intimate relationships for a long time, and if they agree to them, then without due inspiration. In such cases, a psychogenic factor can be the cause of pain. The famous postpartum depression is a condition common among women who have had a cesarean section. Accordingly, the depressive state, as well as possible vaginal dryness, often vaginismus, are an obstacle to getting true pleasure from sex.
However, the most typical reason for pain during sex after a cesarean section is considered to be the adhesion process. The operation inevitably leads to adhesions of varying degrees of prevalence.
Pain after sex in men
Genitalgia, dyspareunia are typical symptom complexes characteristic of women. However, pain after sex in men is also quite common, perhaps the low statistical percentage is due to the reluctance, shyness of men who consider it awkward and even unacceptable to present complaints of such an intimate nature.
Pain after sex in men is commonly called postcoital genitalgia. It can be a direct indication of an inflammatory process in the genitourinary system, but can also be caused by psychogenic factors.
- STDs are sexually transmitted diseases. In this sense, gonorrhea is the most typical, which often provokes painful symptoms both during and after sex.
- Inflammatory process in the prostate gland.
- Prostate tumor.
- Urethritis.
- Urolithiasis.
- Vesiculitis.
- Varicocele.
- Hydrocele.
- Anatomical pathologies of the penis structure.
- Torn frenulum of the penis.
- Postcoital cystitis.
- Postcoital headache (orgasmic headache).
- Genitalia frustrana – pain associated with the end of coitus (with anorgasmia in women).
- Genital herpes.
- Epididymitis.
- Cryptorchidism.
- Diseases of the spine (lumbosacral region).
- Interrupted sexual intercourse, interrupted ejaculation.
Pain in penis after sex
A typical cause that provokes pain in the penis after sex is a pathology of the prostate gland. In addition, the pain symptom may be associated with the condition of the partner, for example, if the woman does not have the proper amount of lubrication, the penis will be injured. This is completely unnoticeable during the act, but after it the man feels itching, burning and pain. An uncircumcised penis is subject to mechanical trauma, the foreskin is stretched, it can tear and become inflamed.
Reasons that provoke pain in the penis after sex:
- Inflammation of the head, foreskin - balanitis, posthitis (balanoposthitis). Pain, hyperemia of the head, swelling, discharge with pus, burning - this is far from a complete list of sensations that accompany this disease.
- Diabetes mellitus, which may be accompanied by circulatory disorders and tissue necrosis of the head of the penis.
- STDs, condylomas, gonorrhea, other venereal diseases.
- Inguinal lymphogranuloma, accompanied by pain in the penis, lymphadenopathy, dysuria.
- Peyronie's disease, penile curvature. Induration of the penis is accompanied by the formation of a painless fibrous node, during sexual intercourse the pain symptom can manifest and appear only during or after sex.
- Cavernitis is an inflammation of the cavernous body of the penis. Most often, cavernitis is one of the complications of urethritis. In addition to pain, cavernitis is manifested by high body temperature, chills, headache, and often an abscess at the site of the infiltrate.
- Urethritis.
- Urolithiasis, when sand or small stones pass through the urethra.
- Prostatitis.
- Inflammation of the seminal tubercle - colliculitis.
- Contusion of the penis, its dislocation, fracture.
- Pinching of the penis as a result of sexual games.
- Priapism is an erection lasting more than 5-6 hours.
Pain in the penis both during and after sex requires timely examination, diagnosis and adequate therapy. If you start treatment in time, you can avoid not only serious pathologies, but also the main "trouble" and fear of many men - impotence and infertility.
Headache after sex
Pain in the head of the penis is a clear symptom of inflammation, most often of infectious etiology. The manifestation of such pathology can be moderate, but pain in the head after sex is just a manifestation of the disease. It can be said that sexual intercourse serves as a kind of trigger, allowing the disease to manifest itself clinically.
In addition to inflammation, pain in the head after sex can be caused by the following factors:
- STDs.
- Mechanical trauma.
- Thermal damage.
- Vascular pathologies.
- Urolithiasis.
- Anatomical destructive pathologies.
- The most common cause of pain in the head is considered to be balanoposthitis. Inflammation of the head and foreskin is often associated with infectious diseases, hypothermia, but mainly it is a failure to comply with basic hygiene rules. The pain is acute, accompanied by hyperemia, swelling of the head, itching and burning, hyperthermia. Often with balanoposthitis, you can notice a significant increase in the lymph nodes in the groin. Untreated balanoposthitis develops into erosions, purulent ulcers and even gangrene of the foreskin. Any intensity of sexual intercourse only irritates and aggravates the course of the disease, its signs are especially clearly felt after sex.
- Also, pain in the head after sex can be associated with STDs, venereal diseases, herpes. This is caused by excessive passion for changing partners, uncontrolled unprotected sex.
- Cavernitis is another reason for the appearance of pain symptoms after sexual intercourse. Inflammation of the cavernous bodies can develop due to trauma or infection of the urethra. At the site of inflammation, an abscess develops, which is injured, damaged and often breaks through during sex.
- Inflammatory process in the urethra can provoke postcoital pain. Urethritis has a bacterial root cause and often develops as a consequence of STDs.
- Phimosis or paraphimosis. Narrowing of the foreskin leads to mechanical pressure and pain. In addition, phimosis is often complicated by balanoposthitis, which only increases the pain symptom.
- Rupture of the frenulum, most often due to traumatic injury (aggressive, active sex).
- Tumor of the head of the penis (with papillomavirus).
- Priapism.
Painful symptoms in the head of the penis can be treated quite successfully if you contact a urologist or venereologist in a timely manner.
Pain in testicles after sex
Pain in the testicles after sex is a specific sign of an inflammatory process in them or in the prostate. What else can provoke postcoital pain in the testicles?
- Orchitis.
- Epididymitis is an inflammatory process in the epididymis.
- Chlamydia, mycoplasmosis, ureaplasmosis and other STDs.
- Chronic prostatitis.
- Trauma – bruise, blow.
- Inguinal hernia.
- Tumor.
- Urolithiasis.
- Testicular torsion.
- Sexual arousal without ejaculation.
- Hydrocele, varicocele, spermatocele.
Many pathologies of the testicles may not manifest themselves in a clinical sense, an active sexual life often contributes to the manifestation of symptoms. Pain in the testicles after coitus is especially typical, since the completion of sexual intercourse is accompanied by a powerful rush of blood flow to the genitals. In the presence of diseases, dysfunctions, the blood flow encounters obstacles, pain develops.
Almost all diseases associated with the testicles in men are successfully treated, perhaps this is explained by the fact that the signs of the disease are visible (the testicles are outside, not inside). The only difficulty in timely diagnosis of pathologies can be considered false modesty and fears of the stronger sex, these factors prevent men from seeking help from a doctor in time.
Prostate pain after sex
Sexual intercourse in both women and men is impossible without intensive blood circulation, which is significantly accelerated and intensified by interaction with the corresponding hormones. If there are congestions, stagnation in the organs to which the blood rushes, vascular disorders occur accordingly, in addition, the transmission of nerve impulses is disrupted, pain develops. The prostate plays an important role in the male body, it controls the process of readiness, maturation of sperm, the condition of spermatozoa. In addition, the prostate is connected by nerve pathways to almost all pelvic organs, which explains the pain.
Prostate pain after sex is a typical symptom of chronic prostatitis, inflammation of the prostate gland. The pain may vary in location, severity and intensity. Most often, prostatitis is accompanied by painful urination, burning during and after sexual intercourse.
Prostate pain after sex, localization:
- Prevalence in all genital organs.
- Pubic bone.
- Scrotum.
- Lower abdomen, less often on the side.
- Lumbar region and sacrum.
- Rectum.
- Irradiation to the femoral part.
What makes prostate pain worse after sex?
- Hypothermia.
- Aggressive sexual contact.
- Physical exhaustion before sex.
- Alcohol.
- Monotonous positions during sex.
Chronic prostatitis is a disease of civilization, which is becoming “younger” with each passing year. According to statistics, 65% of sexual dysfunctions in men are associated with inflammation of the prostate gland, which includes impotence and infertility.
Scrotum pain after sex
If a man develops pain in the scrotum after sex, this may be evidence of an exacerbation of the inflammatory process in the prostate gland. Acute prostatitis is a reason to immediately contact a urologist, undergo examinations and urgently begin treatment.
Symptoms of exacerbation of prostatitis may be as follows:
- Heaviness in the lower abdomen.
- Pain during sex, increased pain after intercourse.
- Pain when urinating.
- Pain during physical activity in the scrotum area.
In addition to prostatitis, pain in the scrotum after sex can be caused by the following diseases:
- Varicocele is a pathological dilation of the spermatic cord (varicose veins). Both the testicles and scrotum hurt, and if varicocele is not treated, a man may develop persistent infertility.
- Hydrocele is an accumulation of excess fluid in the scrotum, causing it to swell.
- An inguinal hernia, which can worsen symptoms after sex and manifest as pain in the scrotum.
- Testicular torsion. In adult men, this pathology is quite rare, but with active sexual contacts, often promiscuous, postcoital torsion occurs in 15-17%.
Scrotal pain is rarely acute, more often it is dull and aching. However, such pains also require timely diagnosis and treatment.
Pain after anal sex
The modern world is changing so quickly that the previously taboo topic of anal sex is now considered almost the most fashionable, and homosexual relations have become a completely normal phenomenon almost all over the world.
I will not go into details of the moral side of this issue; it is more appropriate to discuss the physiological part, including pain after anal sex.
To avoid painful sensations during such an exotic type of sexual relations, you need to adhere to the basic “golden” rule of any sex:
Sexual contact should bring pleasure, not discomfort. If pain occurs after anal sex, then one of the rules has been violated. What is a contraindication to anal contact? Conditions, diseases that can provoke a pain symptom after anal intercourse:
- Anal fissures.
- Hemorrhoids in any of their manifestations, both chronic, especially in the acute stage.
- Submucous rectal abscess.
- Coccygeal cyst.
- Intervertebral hernia of the lumbosacral spine.
- Rectal polyps.
- Appendicitis, both chronic and in the acute stage.
- Rectal prolapse.
- Prostatitis, both chronic and acute.
- Rectal tumor.
- Ovarian cyst (during anal intercourse with a woman).
- Worm infestations.
- Venereal diseases, STDs.
- Pathological inflammations of the pelvic organs in women – adnexitis, colpitis, endometriosis, cysts, and so on.
- Paraproctitis.
- Colitis.
- HIV, AIDS.
- Pregnancy.
To prevent pain during or after anal sex, firstly, knowledge about the process, preparation for it, psycho-emotional readiness of partners, and the absence of the above-mentioned diseases will help
Pain in the anus after sex
In principle, the vagina is adapted for sex, or rather for penis penetration, not the rectum. However, there are lovers of sharp, extravagant ways to satisfy sexual needs, who are not at all afraid of possible pain in the anus after sex. When the penis penetrates the anus, it can stretch so actively that it provokes a painful symptom, often very acute.
If you know why and for what reasons this pain can develop, it is possible to prevent it.
Pain in the anus after sex can be caused by the following diseases and conditions:
- Too fast penetration into the anus.
- Intestinal trauma due to incompatibility of the sizes of the penis and anus (the vagina is more elastic, which is why a woman is able to give birth to a child).
- A rupture of the rectal mucosa, often accompanied by bleeding.
- Haemorrhoids.
- Muscle spasm.
- Anal fissure.
- Paraproctitis.
- Rectal abscess.
- Rectal tumor.
- Lack of lubrication, dryness (unlike the anus, the vagina is capable of producing lubrication on its own).
- Spastic constipation.
In general, whether to have anal sex, whether to tolerate pain in the anus after sex, or to give it up in favor of traditional (heterogeneous) sexual contacts is the choice and responsibility of both partners. Judging by the increasing number of lovers of anal acts, they are not fatal, and pain can be avoided with proper preparation.
Pain in the urethra after sex
Sex, especially unprotected, is dangerous because of its consequences. Pain in the urethra after sex is one of the typical signs of not only cystitis, but also STDs – sexually transmitted diseases. Of course, if you see a doctor in a timely manner, they can be treated, but it is still better to avoid such troubles.
Pain in the urethra after sex is characterized by burning, sharp sensations, the pain intensifies during urination (dysuria), and can recur for a long time even with antibacterial therapy. Pain in the urethra can occur in both women and men and is associated with the following reasons:
- Postcoital cystitis in women. This is a typical symptom, which is also called the "honeymoon" syndrome. During defloration, not only the hymen is damaged, but also the urethra is injured, especially if sex was unprotected. Microbial infection of the urethra, and possibly failure to observe personal hygiene rules can provoke cystitis and, as a result, pain in the urethra after sex.
- Inflammation of the urethra in both women and men can be explained by hypothermia or pyelonephritis. Sex provokes increased pain and worsens the course of the disease.
- Pain in the urethra after sex in men can be associated with prostatitis, periurethral abscess, urolithiasis, and also a sexually transmitted disease (gonorrhea).
- Sexually transmitted diseases. They affect women and men who do not care about their sexual health. The first thing that gets infected with STDs is the urethral canal as the most vulnerable organ for the penetration of pathogenic agents.
Pain when urinating after sex
A typical symptom of prostatitis is pain when urinating after sex. In women, this symptom may indicate cystitis, including postcoital cystitis. Also, any disease from a large list of STDs may be a factor that increases pain when urinating:
- Venereal diseases.
- Pathologies transmitted sexually to other organs.
Most often, pain when urinating after sex, especially unprotected, is caused by:
- Ureaplasmosis.
- Chlamydia.
- Gonorrhea.
- Mycoplasmosis.
- Herpes virus.
- Candidiasis.
- Trichomoniasis.
Also, impaired urination after sexual intercourse is typical for the following pathologies:
- Neurogenic bladder.
- Bladder tumor.
- Prostatic hyperplasia in men.
- Pressure on the bladder and urethra from nearby inflamed organs.
- Narrowing of the lumen of the urethra.
- Urolithiasis.
- Atrophy of the urinary bladder sphincter muscles.
- Atrophic vaginitis.
- Prolapse of the uterus and vagina.
- Diabetes.
Treatment for pain after sex
Treatment and therapeutic complex of measures for postcoital pain should obviously correspond to the therapy of the underlying disease. Pain after sex is not a disease, but a symptom, often nonspecific.
The main rule in determining the treatment tactics for neutralizing genitalgia is to eliminate the etiological factor; often, such a solution requires long-term, extensive diagnostics, including all methods available to modern medicine.
If dyspareunia is associated with psychogenic causes, treatment of pain after sex consists of a course of psychotherapeutic sessions, as well as the prescription of adequate muscle relaxants and sedatives.
If genitalgia is associated with an infectious etiology, after identifying the causative agent of the disease, intensive antibacterial therapy is carried out.
Treatment for pain after sex should be done for both the woman and the man, that is, both partners are treated to avoid relapses and new infections.
If you consult a gynecologist, urologist, sexologist, or neurologist in a timely manner, pain after sex can not only be cured, but also prevented from occurring in the future.
Treatment of postcoital pain caused by STDs and venereal diseases deserves a separate topic and discussion. Such pathologies are not only dangerous in terms of complications, they carry an epidemiological threat, which is why regular urological and gynecological examinations are so important.
Preventing pain after sex
Preventive measures to prevent pain after sex consist of a conscious, competent attitude to sexual contacts in principle. Prevention of pain after sex is, first of all, protected sexual intercourse, be it with a condom or vaginal preparations, means. In this way, it is possible to avoid, prevent infection with STDs, venereal diseases, herpes viruses, hepatitis, HIV. In addition, prevention of pain after sex is systematic visits to the attending urologist, gynecologist, examinations and tests. In this way, it is possible to prevent the development of many inflammatory processes, to identify them at early stages.
It is also important to observe basic rules of personal hygiene, but perhaps the most important thing is to treat your partner with care and reverence, then sex will bring only mutual pleasure, and not pain.
