Myelogram is the percentage ratio of cellular elements in smears prepared from red bone marrow punctures. Bone marrow contains two groups of cells: reticular stromal cells (fibroblasts, osteoblasts, fat and endothelial cells), which constitute an absolute minority in number, and hematopoietic tissue cells (parenchyma).

Currently, bone marrow biopsy is a mandatory diagnostic method in hematology, as it allows for the assessment of tissue relationships in the bone marrow.

Red bone marrow examination is performed to confirm or establish a diagnosis of various forms of hemoblastoses and anemias. The myelogram must be assessed by comparing it with the peripheral blood picture. Bone marrow examination is of diagnostic value when affected by lymphogranulomatosis, tuberculosis, Gaucher disease, Niemann-Pick disease, tumor metastases, visceral leishmaniasis. This study is widely used in dynamics to assess the effectiveness of the therapy.
