Changes in scrapings from the nasal mucosa and a presumptive diagnosis
Symptom
|
Presumptive diagnosis
|
Increase in the number of eosinophils |
Allergic rhinitis, eosinophilic non-allergic rhinitis, rhinitis with intolerance to acetylsalicylic acid, Cherdja Strauss syndrome, nasal polyps |
Increase in the number of basophils and mast cells |
The same (in the presence of eosinophils) and systemic mastocytosis |
An increase in the number of neutrophils: |
|
With phagocytosed bacteria |
Infectious rhinitis or nasopharyngitis |
Without bacteria |
Acute respiratory diseases, vasomotor rhinitis, rhinitis and sinusitis caused by irritants, allergic rhinitis (the latter is accompanied by eosinophilia) |
Cages of ciliated epithelium with condensed chromatin |
Acute respiratory diseases |
Increase in the number of goblet cells |
Allergic or infectious rhinitis (less often - vasomotor rhinitis) |
Similarly, the results of scrapings from the conjunctiva in allergic eye diseases are examined and evaluated. An increase in the number of eosinophils, basophils and mast cells is evidence in favor of allergic conjunctivitis; prevalence of neutrophils - about bacterial conjunctivitis, conjunctivitis caused by irritants (in combination with an increase in the content of eosinophils - allergic conjunctivitis); lymphocytes - about viral conjunctivitis.
