Bifidumbacterin for newborns can become one of the drugs of choice for many problems. This drug is a probiotic agent that is used very widely today. The effectiveness of probiotics is proven not only in the treatment of problems with the digestive system, but also in the prevention of some viral and bacterial infections of other organs.

How Probiotics Work

The term probiotics refers to a group of bacteria that occur naturally in the human body, but are also found in some foods like yogurt, as well as many supplements. Often referred to as “friendly” bacteria, probiotics can help control harmful bacteria in the body, especially in the digestive tract, which can aid in digestion and potentially prevent gas and bloating – especially for those with digestive issues.

Probiotics are live and active microorganisms, mostly bacteria, that are similar to those found in the human and infant digestive tracts. However, a baby is not born with a pre-existing composition of flora in the digestive system, and all the beneficial and necessary bacteria eventually enter the infant's intestines after birth.

Probiotics are defined as non-pathogenic strains of the organism that are included in the diet to alter the microbial ecology of the gut, resulting in beneficial structural and functional changes in the gut. Some probiotics may act as a barrier to colonizing pathogens to prevent disease and enhance the immune system. In addition, some may perform metabolic functions, such as assisting in the fermentation of indigestible fibers and storing energy in the form of short-chain fatty acids. Of all the species of gut microbiota, Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli are considered the two most important bacteria beneficial to human health, while Staphylococcus and Clostridia are considered pathogenic to human health.

And if the mother had problems with normal flora during pregnancy or after childbirth, the child cannot get the beneficial bacteria that he needs. Therefore, the issue of using probiotics is especially relevant for newborns.

Indications Bifidumbacterin for an infant

Indications for the use of the drug Bifidumbacterin are very wide. This is explained by the fact that the drug contains Bifidobacterii, which is an integral part of the normal flora in infants. Therefore, the drug is primarily used for various disorders of the intestinal microflora. In newborns, this can manifest itself in functional constipation, diarrhea, colic, as well as impaired intestinal motility. Bifidumbacterin for newborns with constipation, diarrhea, colic acts primarily by replenishing the number of bacteria that have an inhibitory effect on pathological bacteria. Gas in the intestinal tract is a common cause of bloating in newborns. This is often associated with specific bacteria, so taking probiotics can help eliminate problem bacteria.

Another indication for the use of Bifidumbacterin may be the restoration of flora in a child after antibiotics and thus the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. One of the proposed mechanisms of protection of probiotics from the action of antibiotics is the regulation of the composition of organisms in the intestine. Studies related to Bifidobacterium indicate that these microbes inhibit the growth of facultative anaerobic bacteria, which are usually enhanced by antibiotic treatment. As a result, it is clear that probiotics can change and prevent changes in the intestinal microflora caused by antibiotics.

Bifidumbacterin for the prevention of complications after antibiotic treatment can be used after the course of treatment, as well as in parallel during the course of treatment.

Bifidumbacterin can also be used to restore flora after a child has had an acute intestinal infection, or, more often in newborns, after an intrauterine infection and long-term treatment of this pathology.

Release form

The form of the drug allows it to be used in different cases - this is bifidumbacterin dry powder in ampoules, vials and sachets, as well as bifidumbacterin liquid in ampoules, vials and drops. There are also suppositories for local use, but this form is rarely used in newborns. Bifidumbacterin forte, unlike other forms, contains not only pure bacteria free from the environment, but bacteria are mobilized on particles of activated carbon, which allows bacteria to be locally fixed and perform their function better. Bifidumbacterin with carbon is not used for newborns.

Pharmacodynamics

The pharmacodynamics of the drug are not completely clear, but two mechanisms are currently proposed. The first mechanism suggests that Bifidobacterium increases the development of intestinal mucins (glycosylated proteins), which therefore protect the body from intestinal infections.
