Pregnancy is one of the happiest periods in a woman's life. However, even this happy time can be marred by minor ailments that manifest themselves in the form of painful sensations. Headache, toothache, stomachache - all these conditions cause considerable discomfort to a woman. In addition, it is known that taking pain pills during pregnancy is highly undesirable. So what to do? How to rid yourself of any manifestations of pain? Let's talk about this in more detail.
Indications for the use of pain pills during pregnancy
It is not recommended to take medications during pregnancy, this can be done only in extreme cases. If the pain is minor and can go away on its own, try not to take medications. In more complex situations, consult a doctor, especially in the first and last trimester of pregnancy:
- constant and significant headaches that gradually intensify and increase;
- the headache does not subside even after rest and sleep;
- the pain is not diffuse, but localized, on the right or left, in the front or back of the head;
- In addition to headaches, there are other symptoms - deterioration of vision, shooting and pain in the ears, speech and movement disorders;
- changes in blood pressure, feverish conditions.
Toothache, regardless of its intensity, always requires a mandatory visit to the dentist, because the mother’s sore teeth and gums also negatively affect the baby.
Of course, the best option is when the teeth were treated during the period of planning a child. However, situations are different, and visiting the dentist during pregnancy does not pose any danger to the fetus. It is only recommended to refuse anesthesia if possible.
Pharmacodynamics
Almost all tablets have a different mechanism of action on the body. For example, drugs of different spectrum of action can be used against pain: narcotic and non-narcotic analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antispasmodics, tranquilizers, distracting agents, nervous system stimulants.
In particular, one of the most common drugs – paracetamol – acts to reduce the bioelectrical activity of the brain, relieves pain, and calms the excited state of the nervous system.
No-shpa belongs to the group of antispasmodics, this drug has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of the cerebral vessels, relieves spasms caused by nervous tension, fear, and changes in atmospheric pressure.
The action of ibuprofen is due to its analgesic, antiproliferative and decongestant properties.
Analgin and similar drugs (pentalgin, tempalgin, baralgin, kofalgin) have a pronounced analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect.
Citramon and Askofen tablets are a combination of the well-known aspirin and caffeine, which complement each other favorably, especially if the pain is associated with a decrease in blood pressure.
Tablets for pain during pregnancy based on nimesulide (alit, aponil, mesulide, nise, nimesil, nimesic, nimid, pansulide, etc.) are quite effective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of the methanesulfonanilide group.
Pharmacokinetics
The form of release of an analgesic drug largely determines its pharmacokinetics. For oral use, drugs can be used in the form of tablets and powders: tablets are preferable in this case, since they enter the upper sections of the small intestine almost unchanged, where the drug is absorbed into the blood. The degree of absorption when taken orally is quite high. The presence of food in the stomach slows down absorption, but does not affect its degree. Once in the bloodstream, the active components of drugs are capable of acting for 6-8 hours, after which they are excreted from the body. The maximum concentration of the active substance in the plasma is achieved within 0.5-1.5 hours.
Analgesics are metabolized mainly in the liver and kidneys. About 50% are excreted from the body with urine, up to 30% with feces. Only up to 3% of drugs can be excreted unchanged. None of the presented modifications of the drugs are capable of accumulating in the body.
Method of administration and dosage
In case of headaches or toothaches during pregnancy, due to the undesirable intake of medications, in extreme situations, some medications may be prescribed by a specialist.
Taking pain pills during pregnancy is carried out starting with the minimum permissible dosage (1/2 tablet per single dose), after meals, with a sufficient amount of liquid. The maximum permissible single dose is one tablet, no more. Further intake and choice of drug must be agreed upon with the doctor.
Headache pills during pregnancy
Before taking a headache pill, be sure to consult with your doctor. Taking any medications during pregnancy is highly undesirable, especially during the first trimester, when the embryo does not yet have its own protection. All medications and chemicals taken during this period will definitely reach your future child.
First, try to soothe your headache without taking medication. For example, you can just take a walk in the fresh air or ventilate the room. You can ask your husband to give you a head and neck massage.
If you suspect that your blood pressure has increased, you can drink weak tea with mint. Low blood pressure will stabilize after a cup of coffee or strong tea.
Applying a fresh cabbage leaf or just a towel soaked in cold water to the forehead produces good results.
If the pain stubbornly does not go away, and folk remedies do not help, in extreme cases, you have to take a pill, because tolerating pain is also not recommended.
Among the means of relative safety for a pregnant woman and child are paracetamol and no-shpa. However, the advice of a doctor will not be superfluous.
Tablets for toothache during pregnancy
Unbearable toothache is a difficult test for any person. During pregnancy, the occurrence of such pain may be associated with a deficiency of calcium or other minerals in the body.
If you experience toothache, you should see a dentist, because if there is pain, then there is a problem: caries, gum inflammation, pulpitis, periodontitis, gumboil.
However, if you go to the doctor tomorrow, and today the pain just won’t let you rest, you can try the following remedies:
- rinse your teeth with a warm soda solution;
- rinse the sore tooth with an infusion of sage or oak bark;
- You can soak a cotton swab in mint tincture and bite it onto the sore tooth.
In the first months of pregnancy, it is better to refuse taking any pills. In extreme cases, after consulting with a doctor, you can take one of the painkillers. These are ibuprofen, nimesulide, paracetamol, analgin, spazmalgin, no-shpa. Taking pills secretly from the doctor is not recommended, this can only worsen the prognosis of the situation.
Contraindications to the use of pain pills during pregnancy
The use of pain pills during pregnancy is in itself a relative contraindication requiring a doctor's consultation. Any analgesics are not recommended for use during pregnancy, especially during the first and last trimesters.
Also, possible contraindications for taking pain pills include:
- hypersensitivity (allergy) to any of the components of the drug;
- previous hepatotoxic events after taking medications;
- gastric ulcer or gastroduodenitis in the acute stage, ulcer relapses and signs of internal bleeding;
- severe forms of cardiac, hepatic and renal failure;
- third trimester, prenatal and lactation periods;
- cold and flu symptoms.
Salicylic acid derivatives should not be taken if you have a tendency to bleeding or reduced blood clotting (hemophilia).
Caffeine-containing drugs are not prescribed for those with a tendency to hypertension.
Women with low blood pressure should be careful when using antispasmodic drugs.
Side effects
The side effects of pain pills during pregnancy are due to their mechanism of action:
- antispasmodics can cause weakness, a feeling of dryness in the nasopharynx, gastrointestinal disorders;
- Salicylic acid analogues can cause nausea, tinnitus, deterioration of hearing and vision, diplopia, increased sweating, weakness, anxiety, allergic and anaphylactic reactions;
- drugs containing analgin most often provoke changes in the blood picture - this is the appearance of agranulocytosis, leukopenia. In rare cases, dizziness, a feeling of chills, feverish conditions are possible;
- Paracetamol is characterized by side effects in the form of anemia, hemoglobinemia, drowsiness, weakening of the pulse, allergic skin manifestations, psychomotor agitation, convulsions;
- Nimesulide may cause dizziness, hypertension, shortness of breath, flatulence, skin manifestations. Laboratory tests may show an increase in liver enzymes.
However, we would like to remind you that these side effects of analgesic drugs can only develop under conditions of constant and uncontrolled use, which is absolutely unacceptable during pregnancy.
Overdose
Analgesic overdose during pregnancy can only occur with the unauthorized, uncontrolled intake of medications by a woman without consultation and prescription from a doctor. Such a situation is considered unacceptable and can have unpredictable consequences for the growing fetus, up to and including termination of pregnancy or the development of defects and anomalies in the future child.
Any medication intake during pregnancy should be under the supervision and with the approval of a doctor; any other situation can be regarded as a crime against your future child.
Interactions with other drugs
It is not recommended to take acetylsalicylic acid with antiplatelet drugs: this can provoke bleeding, including internal bleeding. If the simultaneous use of such drugs cannot be canceled, then their combined use should be carried out under careful monitoring of blood clotting parameters.
Storage conditions
There are no special storage conditions for analgesics. The only requirement that applies to all medications is that pain pills during pregnancy should be kept out of the reach of children.
Best before date
The shelf life of the drugs can be up to three years under proper storage conditions. Do not use tablets and other dosage forms if the expiration date indicated on the packaging has already expired.
Pain relief pills during pregnancy are only applicable in situations where the pain becomes unbearable and visiting a doctor is not possible at the moment.
In any other case, try to use safe folk remedies, do not get nervous, do not give in to stressful situations, eat well and get enough sleep.
