Furadonin is a commonly used drug that removes infectious diseases of the urinary tract. Some experts allow to take Furadonin during pregnancy with short medical courses, although the instructions to the drug says that during this period it is forbidden to use it.
Can Furadonin be used during pregnancy?
Furadonin is included in the category of nitrofurans. It has antimicrobial properties, exerting a depressing effect on bacteria that provoke inflammation of the urinary tract. Nowadays, there are more effective antibacterial medicines, but Furadonin is still prescribed in some cases. Usually this happens when it turns out that the microflora, which triggered the onset of inflammation, is insensitive to other drugs. To Furadonin, bacteria usually get used slowly enough. But, since this medicine is able to pass through the placenta and affect the fetus, it is often forbidden to use it during the period of gestation.
But Furadonin is not an extremely toxic drug - it is classified as a B in terms of the impact on the child. This letter is labeled with medicines that, when tested on animals, showed a risk for the baby, but clinical studies did not show it or the effect was poorly understood.
The drug type B is allowed to use in pregnancy, although the instructions to the medicine indicate that during gestation it can not be used, since the risk of a negative effect on the fetus still exists. In practice, it is used, but only after the preliminary microbiological analysis (bacussis) of urine is done - this helps to identify the cause of the infection, as well as the sensitivity of these microorganisms in relation to antibacterial drugs.
Indications of the furadonine in pregnancy
In pregnancy, urinary tracts often become inflamed, because during this period of time immunity decreases, and also because the urinary tract circulation system is located next to the intestines, so that pathogens can enter the urinary system together with blood. In addition, the growing uterus presses on the organs of the urinary system. As a result of all this, pregnant women often suffer from pyelonephritis and cystitis.
Furadonin is indicated for the treatment of inflammation and infectious diseases of the urinary tract in pregnant women, but only when it turns out that the bacteria that triggered the inflammation are not amenable to treatment with less toxic drugs.

Release form
The drug is available in the form of tablets with a volume of 50 or 100 mg. On the blister 10 tab. There are 2 blisters in the package.
Pharmacodynamics
Antibacterial drug from the group of nitrofurans, which destroys the membrane of bacterial cells, and also prevents protein synthesis in them, thus providing bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects. Actively affects gram positive Gram-negative bacteria (streptococci and staphylococcus, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella enterica with Salmonella schottmuelleri, and in addition Escherichia coli and Proteus, as well as enterobacter and Shigella sonnei).
Dosing and administration
The medicine is taken orally by washing with water. Dosage for an adult is 0.1-0.15 g 3-4 r. / Day. The maximum one-time dose is 0.3 g, and for a day it is allowed to take no more than 0.6 g. The treatment course lasts 7-10 days if the patient has a urologic infection in acute form.
Furadonin in the first weeks and early pregnancy
Furadonin should not be used in the first 12 weeks. More precisely - in the period from the 2nd to the 12th week inclusive. It is in this gap that the fetus is most vulnerable to the influence of various drugs, because at that time the basic tissues with organs are formed.
Furadonin in late pregnancy
Use of Furadonin after the 12th week is allowed only with the appointment of a doctor. The specialist should assess the risk of using the drug and compare with how critical for the body develops inflammation of the urinary ducts and kidneys.
Side effects of the furadonine in pregnancy
The use of furadonin can cause in pregnant women such adverse reactions:
- Respiratory system: the appearance of a cough, pain in the sternum, shortness of breath, and swelling of the lung tissue; there may be an increase in seizures in patients with bronchial asthma;
- Gastrointestinal tract: lack of appetite, vomiting with nausea, pain and discomfort at the top of the abdomen, as well as diarrhea; sometimes there is toxic damage to the liver, due to which hepatitis develops;
- CNS and peripheral NA: dizziness along with headaches, neuritis, and general lethargy;
- Circulatory system: decreased immunity due to a decrease in the number of leukocytes, increased bleeding due to a decrease in the number of platelets, as well as a variety of types of anemia;
- Allergies: rashes on the skin (for example, urticaria), angioedema;
- Skin: toxic reaction under the guise of a rash;
- Others: an increase in temperature with joint pain (a feeling similar to influenza), and the occurrence of a secondary infection.
Interactions with other drugs
The combination with antacids (which contain E553a), as well as nalidixic acid, can reduce the antibacterial properties of Furadonin.
In addition, the drug is not allowed to combine with fluoroquinolones. LS, which inhibit the process of tubular secretion (reducing the uranium saturation of the substance nitrofurantoin), reduce the antimicrobial effect of Furadonin, and also increase its toxicity (as the concentration of the active substance of the drug in the blood increases).
Shelf life
Shelf life of the medicinal product is 4 years.
Furadonin during pregnancy can be used only with the permission of a doctor.
