Conjugated linoleic acid (SLA) is a natural product found mainly in beef, lamb and dairy products. SLA is an isomer of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid with double bonds with 10 and 12 or 9 and 11 carbon atoms. The researchers suggest that since SLA can be included in the cell membrane, it can influence the reactions of cellular hormones that can inhibit hormones with catabolic action and thus maintain anabolism.
Main functions
- Increases the lean mass.
- Reduces fat mass.
- It is a powerful antioxidant.
Research results
Most of the studies using CLA were performed on animals. Miller et al. Were fed to chickens, rats, and mice before administering endotoxin to stimulate weight loss and reduce protein synthesis. After endotoxin administration, the animals that received the CLA maintained body weight or restored it faster than animals that did not receive the CLA. Feeding of SLA also contributed to increased nitrogen consumption and increased albumin levels. SLK promotes the preservation of protein in muscles. There are reports that male bodybuilding newcomers, who took 7.2 grams of CLA per day and exercised for 6 weeks, increased their muscle mass more than bodybuilders who received a placebo. The researchers concluded that the SLA acts as a mild anabolic agent.
Another unpublished study, discussed in "Environmental Nutrition", shows that Norwegian athletes who received 1.8 g of CLA for 3 months had a 20% reduction in body fat as compared to the placebo group.
In mice fed SLA, 57% and 60% decrease in fat accumulation and a 14% increase in lean muscle mass were found in comparison with the control. The researchers concluded that the effect of SLA on body composition is apparently due to a reduction in fat deposits and an increase in lipolysis in adipocytes, possibly associated with increased oxidation of fatty acids. This study explains the likely mechanism of action of SLA on the amount of adipose tissue.
Recommendations
Information about any harmful reactions as a result of the consumption of additives of SLA is absent. However, most of the research was carried out on animals. The use of SLA as an ergogenic drug justifies further well-controlled studies involving humans.
