Children's vitamins are presented in a fairly wide range on the Ukrainian market. They can consist of either one substance or a whole complex. In the first case, we are talking about single-component vitamins, in the second - about multivitamins. In order not to get confused in the huge number of offered multivitamin preparations, it is better to trust the choice of the drug to the pediatrician. Undoubtedly, the best, safest and most effective source of vitamin substances are fresh vegetables and fruits. But if for some reason the consumption of vegetables and fruits is limited (especially this happens in winter), then vitamin and mineral complexes will come to the rescue, all that remains is to make the right choice.
How to choose the right children's vitamins?
When choosing children's vitamins, first of all, you should clearly focus on the age characteristics of the child. Newborn babies, for example, receive all the necessary nutrients with their mother's milk, so they do not need additional vitamin intake. An exception may be vitamin D3, used to prevent rickets. But it is quite advisable for nursing mothers to take vitamin and mineral complexes during lactation.
When giving your child children's vitamins, strictly adhere to the instructions for taking and dosing, as their excess in the body can cause much more dangerous consequences than their deficiency. Individual characteristics of the child's body, for example, a tendency to allergic reactions, suggest the use of vitamins in which vitamin C is made from hypoallergenic substances.
Children's vitamins should be purchased only at a pharmacy, after reading the instructions. Vitamins should be kept out of reach of children, as accidental consumption of a large number of "sweet candies" by a child can have quite negative consequences. When taking vitamins, drink enough liquid to relieve the kidneys.
The forms of vitamin and mineral complexes for children are quite diverse: these are all kinds of syrups, powders, capsules, lollipops and even jelly candies in the form of funny animals. For the youngest children (from one to three years old), vitamin syrups are most suitable, for older children - lollipops and tablets.
How to take children's vitamins correctly?
Children's vitamins are taken in courses, mainly in the autumn-winter period; in the spring-summer period, it is advisable to get the necessary nutrients from vegetables and fruits.
Signs of acute or moderate vitamin deficiency in the body:
- poor appetite
- decreased physical activity
- increased nervous excitability
- deterioration of vision
- rapid fatigue and sleep disturbances
- anemia, slow growth
- increased sweating
- the appearance of convulsions
It is better to take children's vitamins during meals or immediately after them, preferably in the first half of the day, since this is the time when the body is most active and nutrients are best absorbed. At the very beginning of taking them, be sure to pay attention to the following points: if the child's cheeks turn red, symptoms of irritation, diathesis or rash, nausea or vomiting occur, you should immediately stop taking such a drug.
When buying vitamins, be sure to pay attention to their composition. The vitamin and mineral complex must necessarily contain the following elements:
- Vitamin A - promotes normal growth, improved vision, and skin regeneration.
- B vitamins – normalize metabolism, improve blood circulation.
- Vitamin C - improves muscle growth, strengthens tissues and skin.
- Vitamin D – very useful for bones and teeth, has a strengthening effect.
- Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant, important for the formation of the immune system.
- Iron – is important for normalizing muscle growth and prevents anemia.
- Calcium – has a strengthening effect on bone growth.
Additional elements included in various vitamin and mineral complexes are: folic acid, nicotinamide, calcium pantothenate, magnesium, zinc, iodine, biotin, manganese, chromium, selenium, which help the child's body resist the harmful effects of the environment and are necessary for the physical and mental development of the child.
Children's vitamins are divided into groups depending on the age characteristics of the child:
- Alphabet – Our baby, Kindergarten, Schoolchild, Teenager.
- Multi-tabs – Baby, Malyuk, Malyuk maxi, Schoolboy, Junior.
- Vitrum – Baby, Kids, Junior, Teenager.
- Pikovit – 1+, 3+, 4+, 5+, 7+.
- Kiddi Pharmaton, Kinder Biovital - based on age indicators, the required dosage of the drug is selected.
All the listed vitamin and mineral complexes are designed specifically for children, taking into account individual age and physiological needs. Buy children's vitamins in pharmacies, do not use dubious cheap drugs sold in other places, since the production of high-quality vitamins requires certain material costs, and therefore, the price for them cannot be very low. Consume more vitamins and minerals contained in natural foods, and let your baby grow strong and healthy!
