Furagin is a nitrofuran medication that has antibacterial properties in infections of the urinary system and kidneys. It is actively used by women to treat cystitis and urethritis outside of pregnancy. And here furagin at pregnancy experts to accept do not advise. On how the drug affects pregnancy, let's talk in this article.
Indications for use
Furagin is used for the therapy of infectious lesions caused by a number of bacteria:
- gram (+) - streptococcal and staphylococcal strains;
- gram (-) shigella, salmonella, klebsiella, E. Coli.
Indications for the appointment of furagin in pregnancy are acute and chronic variants of urinary tract infections, as well as the prevention of recurrences with inflammation of the bladder, urethra, pyelonephritis, congenital urinary defects, and prolonged use of bladder catheterization.
The drug is prescribed exclusively by the doctor, if there are strict indications.
Dosing and Administration
The standard way of using furagin and the dose of medication is as follows: from 50 to 100 mg 3-4 times a day for one to two weeks. After that, a break takes 10-15 days. If necessary, the therapeutic course is repeated.
During the treatment, a sufficient intake of liquid and protein-enriched products is recommended (to create an acidic environment in the urine). Furagin is advisable to take during or immediately after eating.
Whether it is possible furagin at pregnancy?
Reliable data on how the furagin affects the fetus has not yet been obtained. Perhaps, in part, for this reason, doctors are slow to prescribe this medication to pregnant women, especially since there are a number of such drugs that are allowed to be used during the period of gestation.
However, this is not the only reason that furagin is contraindicated for use by pregnant women. A characteristic feature of furagin is that it is one of the few antibacterial agents that not only does not depress the woman's immunity, but also in some way stimulates it. It would seem that this is bad? After all, everyone knows how important is a strong immune defense during pregnancy.
However, in the early and late stages of pregnancy too strong immunity can serve as a "disservice" to the expectant mother. Thanks to active immunity, a large number of specific blood cells-"killers" are formed, which sometimes perceive the emerging fetus as an alien body, and attack it. This can lead to miscarriages, frozen pregnancy and other troubles.
However, in some cases, furagin still appoint: this occurs when other drugs do not cope with the infection, and without the appointment of furagin can not do. However, from about 35 weeks of pregnancy, taking furagina is really strictly prohibited.
Norwegian scientists carried out experiments according to which it was found that children with jaundice were more often born in women who during the last 30 days of pregnancy received furagin or other nitrofuran medicines.
Whatever it was, but experts hold almost the same opinion that the appointment of a drug such as furagin, should be strictly justified, and the possible risk for a future child should be commensurate with the expected benefits for a pregnant woman.
Application in early pregnancy
Furagin is an antibacterial synthetic preparation. Such a drug in the early stages can cause pregnancy to die or its spontaneous interruption, as well as a violation in the fetus of the formation of organs of the secretion system. For these reasons, the use of furagin in the first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided.
However, do not worry if pregnancy occurred during the period of treatment with furagin. Medicinal products that enter the female body before the delay, as a rule, do not affect the health of the fetus: it is much more dangerous for the pregnant woman to experience unnecessary worries and worries.
Selecting a medication for a pregnant woman, the doctor will not only assess the harmfulness and benefits of the drug, but also pay attention to the duration of pregnancy, concomitant diseases, the necessary duration of treatment and the sensitivity of the bacteria to a particular drug. Most often, furagin is prescribed only when its application becomes inevitable.
Contraindications for use
In the vast majority of cases, furagin during pregnancy is not prescribed. Moreover, the doctor will not consider the use of the drug in the following cases:
- with polyneuropathy;
- with renal insufficiency;
- with a tendency to allergy to nitrofuran drugs;
- after 35 weeks of pregnancy.
Side effects
Furagin during pregnancy can provoke the appearance of such side effects:
- drowsiness, neuropathy, visual impairment, dizziness;
- dyspepsia, attacks of nausea and vomiting, soreness of the abdomen;
- allergic manifestations (rashes, redness on the skin);
- fever, an increase in body temperature, a general weakness.
In order to reduce the possibility of side effects, it is recommended to drink medication with enough liquid (if there is no edema or other signs of fluid retention in the body), and also use multivitamin complexes with B group vitamins for pregnant women. The appearance of any of the side effects during pregnancy is a sufficient signal to cancel the drug.
Overdose
Overdose of furaginom is expressed, first of all, by intensification of side effects. Headaches, depressive and apathetic conditions, irritability, polyneuritis, and liver functioning disorders can be observed. Often there are attacks of vomiting and nausea.
To eliminate the effects of an overdose, gastric lavage and infusion are performed. In severe cases, hemodialysis is indicated.
