Furagin is a nitrofuran drug with antibacterial properties for urinary tract and kidney infections. It is actively used by women to treat cystitis and urethritis outside of pregnancy. But experts do not recommend taking furagin during pregnancy. We will talk about how the drug affects pregnancy in this article.

Indications for use

Furagin is used to treat infectious lesions caused by a number of bacteria:

  • gram (+) – streptococcal and staphylococcal strains;
  • gram (-) – shigella, salmonella, klebsiella, E. coli.

Indications for the use of furagin during pregnancy are considered to be acute and chronic variants of the course of urinary tract infections, as well as the prevention of relapses in inflammation of the bladder, urethra, pyelonephritis, congenital defects of urination, as well as with prolonged use of bladder catheterization.

The drug is prescribed exclusively by a doctor, in the presence of strict indications.

Method of administration and dosage

The standard method of using furagin and the doses of the drug are as follows: from 50 to 100 mg 3-4 times a day for one to two weeks. After that, a break of 10-15 days is taken. If necessary, the therapeutic course is repeated.

During treatment, it is recommended to drink sufficient amounts of liquid and protein-rich foods (to create an acidic environment in the urine). Furagin should preferably be taken during or immediately after eating.

Is it possible to take furagin during pregnancy?

There is still no reliable data on how furagin affects the fetus. Perhaps, partly for this reason, doctors are reluctant to prescribe this medication to pregnant women, especially since there are a number of similar drugs approved for use during pregnancy.

However, this is not the only reason why furagin is contraindicated for use by pregnant women. A characteristic feature of furagin is that it is one of the few antibacterial agents that not only does not suppress a woman's immunity, but also stimulates it in some way. What's wrong with that, you might ask? After all, everyone knows how important strong immune protection is during pregnancy.

However, in early and late pregnancy, too strong immunity can do a "disservice" to the expectant mother. Thanks to active immunity, a large number of specific "killer" blood cells are formed, which sometimes perceive the developing fetus as a foreign body and attack it. This can lead to miscarriages, frozen pregnancy and other troubles.

However, in some cases, furagin is still prescribed: this happens when other drugs fail to cope with the infection, and furagin cannot be avoided. However, starting from about the 35th week of pregnancy, taking furagin is strictly prohibited.

Norwegian scientists conducted experiments, according to which it was discovered that women who took furagin or other nitrofuran medications in the last 30 days of pregnancy were more likely to give birth to children with jaundice.

Be that as it may, experts are of almost unanimous opinion that the prescription of a drug such as furagin should be strictly justified, and the possible risk to the unborn child should be commensurate with the expected benefit to the pregnant woman.

Use in early pregnancy

Furagin is an antibacterial synthetic drug. Such a drug in the early stages can cause pregnancy fading or its spontaneous termination, as well as disruption of the formation of the excretory system organs in the fetus. For these reasons, the use of furagin should be avoided in the first trimester of pregnancy.

However, there is no need to worry if pregnancy occurs during the period of treatment with furagin. Medicines that enter the female body before the delay, as a rule, do not affect the health of the fetus: much more dangerous is the excessive worries and anxiety of the pregnant woman.

When choosing a medication for a pregnant woman, the doctor will not only evaluate the harm and benefit of the drug, but will also pay attention to the gestational age, concomitant diseases, the required duration of treatment, and the sensitivity of bacteria to a specific drug. Furagin is most often prescribed only when its use becomes inevitable.

Contraindications for use

In the vast majority of cases, furagin is not prescribed during pregnancy. Moreover, the doctor will not consider the issue of using the drug in the following cases:

  • with polyneuropathy;
  • in case of renal failure;
  • if you are prone to allergies to nitrofuran drugs;
  • after 35 weeks of pregnancy.

Side effects

Furagin during pregnancy can provoke the appearance of the following side effects:

  • drowsiness, neuropathy, visual impairment, dizziness;
  • dyspepsia, attacks of nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain;
  • allergic reactions (rashes, redness on the skin);
  • fever, increased body temperature, general weakness.

In order to reduce the possibility of side effects, it is recommended to drink a sufficient amount of liquid with the drug (if there is no swelling or other signs of fluid retention in the body), and also to take multivitamin complexes with B vitamins for pregnant women. The appearance of any of the side effects during pregnancy is a sufficient signal to discontinue the drug.

Overdose

Furagin overdose is expressed, first of all, by increased side effects. Headaches, depressive and apathetic states, irritability, polyneuritis, liver disorders may be observed. Vomiting and nausea attacks often occur.

To eliminate the consequences of overdose, gastric lavage and infusions are performed. In severe cases, hemodialysis is indicated.

Reviews

The majority of reviews about furagin during pregnancy indicate that there is no need to take a drug that is not recommended in this situation. During pregnancy, you should be careful when using certain medications, and also remember the responsibility not only for your health, but also for the life and health of the future baby.

During pregnancy, there are many other safe drugs for the treatment of the urinary system, with proven effectiveness and no negative impact on the course of pregnancy and fetal development. Among the proposed antimicrobial drugs, the most common is the use of Canephron (in tablet form). This is a complex drug that does not pose a danger to pregnancy.

Furagin is prescribed during pregnancy with great caution and cannot be the drug of choice for the treatment of infections in pregnant women. Moreover, it cannot be taken independently without a doctor's prescription and consultation.
