Intestinal cramps are a problem faced by almost all newborns. There are many different medicines and folk methods to treat them.
Infant colic is painful but normal, that is, a physiological phenomenon. After birth, all the organs and systems of the child begin to work differently than in the mother's womb. Particularly sensitive and vulnerable because of its immaturity, is the gastrointestinal tract. Digestion of food causes sharp pains in the abdomen, because of which the baby cries a lot.
The main causes of GI spasms:
- Swallowing air during feeding.
- Improper nutrition of a breastfeeding mom.
- Improperly organized feeding of the child.
- Violation of the instructions for preparing infant formula.
- Various diseases: dysbacteriosis, lactose deficiency, intestinal infections, enzyme deficiency.
- Too slow/fast movement of food through the digestive tract.
The painful condition persists for the first 3-4 months of life. As the body develops, colic goes away on its own. At the same time, spasms occur with equal frequency in both breastfed and artificially fed infants. Attacks occur at any time of day, regardless of food intake. How painful the symptoms will be depends on the individual characteristics of the child's GI tract.
For newborns under 3 weeks of age, doctors do not recommend using medicines. Massage, a special cocoon, and tight swaddling can help. For older babies, there are various suspensions both plant-based and with lacto/bifidobacteria. No less effective are infusions, decoctions and teas based on herbs, i.e. Folk remedies for colic.
Indications Colic medicine
Colic in newborns is an accumulation of gases that causes spasms. This condition is one of the stages of adaptation of the baby to the outside world and takes 2-4 months. During this period, the baby cries often and for a long time, pushes up his legs, and there may be bloating and rumbling of the abdomen.
If the colic lasts longer than 3 hours a day, the baby is not gaining or losing weight, he has too liquid stools, you should see a pediatrician. The doctor will examine the child and give recommendations to alleviate discomfort. For treatment prescribe special exercises for babies, medicines and folk remedies.
Consider the main indications for drug therapy:
- Constant spasms with occasional calmness of the child.
- Frequent abdominal bloating.
- Regular and profuse regurgitation.
- Poor weight gain.
- Stool disorder: diarrhea, constipation.
- Preterm labor with complications.
- Late toxicosis during pregnancy.
- Diabetes mellitus or infectious diseases of the mother.
- Inability to breastfeed.
To relieve pain syndrome and normalize the digestive tract, a step-by-step treatment is carried out. At first, herbal remedies of vetrogonic action are prescribed. If they do not help, then apply preparations simethicone and enzyme means. In acute indications, the pediatrician can interrupt lactation and prescribe the baby mixed or fully artificial feeding with special nutritional mixtures.
Pharmacodynamics
The mechanism of action of the drug for colic on the body of a newborn depends entirely on the composition of the drug. Pharmacodynamics of the drugs Infacol, Sab Simplex and Bobotic is represented by the active component - simethicone.
The active ingredient has vetrogonic properties. It reduces the tension of gas bubbles and destroys their walls. This allows the released gas to be easily expelled by intestinal peristalsis, and new bubbles are not formed.
The active component does not penetrate through the intestinal wall into the blood vessels and is not spread by the bloodstream throughout the body. It works in the gastrointestinal tract. It is excreted unchanged with urine and feces. Preparations with simethicone are an effective prevention of flatulence and painful intestinal spasms in children.
Pharmacokinetics
Another effective remedy for treating colic in infants is the drug Papaverine. It contains the active ingredient papaverine hydrochloride. It inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase, increases intracellular accumulation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate, which leads to impaired contractility of smooth muscles and relaxation of spasms.
The drug has a high degree of absorption. Binding to blood plasma proteins is about 90%. Papaverine hydrochloride forms stable complexes with serum albumin and is evenly distributed in body tissues, penetrates through histohematic barriers. The process of metabolism takes place in the liver, the half-life is about 2 hours. Excreted by the kidneys in the form of metabolites.
Dosing and administration
Depending on the form of release of the drug and the age of the baby depends not only on the method of application of the remedy for colic, but also on its dosage. As a rule, the drug is given during each feeding or 2-3 times a day. If it is a dry powder, it is diluted with milk or added to artificial formula. Tablets are thoroughly crushed. Teas, infusions and decoctions can also be mixed with the main food of the newborn or given instead of water. Treatment can last from 1-3 days or until the painful symptoms disappear completely.
Rating of colic medications for newborns
Intestinal cramps in infants are associated with the adaptation of the immature digestive system to the conditions of life outside the mother's womb. This period is characterized by low activity of digestive enzymes, low intestinal motility and instability of intestinal microflora.
Despite the fact that colic is temporary, it causes a lot of inconvenience to both the child and parents. Special drugs are used to alleviate the painful condition, let's consider the top 10 most popular and effective drugs:
- Bifidumbacterin
The drug is based on live bifidobacteria, which are part of the normal intestinal microflora. Exhibits antibacterial activity against a wide range of opportunistic and pathogenic microorganisms. Restores intestinal microflora, normalizes the work of the gastrointestinal tract, has an immunomodulatory effect.
Used for the treatment of intestinal colic in children and adults, infectious diseases of the intestine, dysbacteriosis. Effective in chronic inflammatory lesions of the large and small intestine, organ dysfunction.
- Bobotic

Side effects Colic medicine
In some cases, an incorrectly designed treatment regimen or failure to follow the doctor's recommendations leads to the development of side symptoms.
In infants, it is manifested by allergic reactions, worsening of the general condition, exacerbation of intestinal spasms. To restore normal condition, it is necessary to discontinue therapy and seek medical help.
Overdose
In most cases, drugs for the treatment of newborns do not cause symptoms of overdose, as they are as safe as possible for infants. Most often overdose has similar signs to adverse reactions, for the elimination of which symptomatic therapy is indicated.
If for some reason the dose prescribed by the doctor was significantly exceeded, it is recommended to seek medical help and closely monitor the condition of the child.
Interactions with other drugs
A comprehensive approach is often used to treat intestinal cramps. It represents the use of several drugs or methods at the same time. Let's consider possible interactions of medicines for colic in newborns with other remedies:

- Motilium is not recommended to use simultaneously with antacid and antisecretory agents. Anticholinergic drugs neutralize antidyspeptic effect of Motilium.
- Papaverine reduces the hypotensive effect of methyldopa. The antispasmodic effect of the drug is enhanced in interaction with dimedrol, analgin, diclofenac.
- Nurofen reduces antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors and diuretics. Increases the risk of gastrointestinal complications when used with glucocorticoids.
- Mezim Forte is not recommended to use with iron-containing agents, as it leads to a decrease in the absorption properties of the drug. Antacids reduce the effect of the drug.
All drug interactions should be monitored by your doctor.
Storage conditions
