If the drug Calcemin is prescribed during pregnancy, it means that your obstetrician-gynecologist believes that this is the only way to replenish the calcium deficiency in the body and normalize mineral metabolism, because during pregnancy the need for calcium increases to 1.5 g per day. On what basis did the doctor make such a conclusion?

Calcium deficiency during pregnancy manifests itself quite clearly. Around the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy, a tingling sensation may appear on the skin of the hands and feet, which in medicine is called paresthesia, that is, a disorder of the sensitivity of the superficial nerves.

The fact that a pregnant woman (and, therefore, the fetus) lacks calcium is also clearly indicated by cramps in the muscles of the legs, painful sensations in the muscles and bones, increased blood pressure and heart rate, progression of caries, brittle nails, dull hair and its intensive loss. To avoid such problems with your health and the health of the future child (the state of its nervous, cardiovascular and skeletal-muscular systems), additional calcium intake is prescribed, for example, Calcemin during pregnancy.

Pharmacodynamics

The instructions for Calcemin during pregnancy inform that this mineral-vitamin complex contains such active substances as calcium citrate (840 mg), calcium carbonate (200 mg), vitamin D (50 IU), manganese (5 mg), zinc (2 mg), copper (0.5 mg) and boron (50 mcg).

It is clear that calcium, which is the fifth most common element in nature, is found in the human body mostly in bone tissue. But this chemical element (in the form of ions) is involved in such processes that ensure the body's vital functions as blood clotting, neuromuscular excitability (including cardiac muscle), permeability of cell membranes and the ability of cells to release substances into the extracellular space (exocytosis), and the synthesis of certain enzymes.

The fact that calcium in the drug Calcemin during pregnancy is present in the form of carbonate and citrate is a very well thought-out decision. The first is richer in calcium than its other compounds, and the second not only helps to increase the biological availability of calcium, but also reduces the likelihood of bladder stones (which often accompanies the intake of calcium-containing drugs).

Do you think that vitamin D3 (aka cholecalciferol) was added to Calcemin by pharmacologists to increase its benefits? And you are not mistaken, because without this vitamin, transcellular (through cells) absorption of calcium in the small intestine would be impossible. In addition, vitamin D3 plays an important role in regulating the reproduction of bone tissue cells and contributes to its structural stability.

Copper prevents the process of bone tissue demineralization; zinc is a part of many enzymes, promotes the restoration of damaged cells and the growth of new ones. Manganese is necessary for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans, which are part of the intercellular substance of connective tissue, contained in bones and synovial fluid.

According to the instructions, the function of boron in Calcemin is that it regulates the activity of parathyroid hormone, which is involved in the exchange of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and cholecalciferol. By the way, most boron is also found in human bones.
