Any person, especially women, are upset about excess weight. There are different ways to fight it. Some choose diets, some exercise, some take special medications. Xenical for weight loss is very popular among users today. It is produced by a Swiss company. As a rule, it is recommended to patients whose obesity has appeared as a result of diabetes, hypertension or atherosclerosis.
Indications for use
The drug is most often used:
- In combination therapy: together with hypoglycemic agents (insulin, metformin). This helps to cure type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is accompanied by excess weight.
- For long-term therapy: helps to get rid of obesity (even if patients have risk factors due to excess weight).
How does Xenical work for weight loss?
The main active component of the weight loss product "Xenical" is orlistat. Due to the fact that this product blocks almost 30% of all fats are excreted from the body without being absorbed. Feeling the approach of "difficult times", the body begins to use up its reserves.
According to various sources, thanks to Xenical, a person's weight decreases by 20-30%. The drug has many advantages. One of the most important is the fact that it is not absorbed into the blood, so there is no addiction and negative impact on organs.
Pharmacokinetics
When conducting studies on volunteers who were not overweight, specialists noticed that Xenical had virtually no effect on the body. Orlistat can be detected in small amounts in plasma quite rarely. There is no accumulation, so we can say that a minimal amount of the drug is absorbed.
Due to poor absorption of the drug, it is quite difficult to determine Vd. Orlistat is 99% bound to plasma proteins. Sometimes a small amount of the active substance can penetrate into red blood cells.
The process of orlistat metabolism occurs in the stomach (in particular, on its walls). The amount of the drug that is not absorbed is excreted through feces (97% of the dose that was taken, and 83% of pure orlistat).
How to use and doses of Xenical for weight loss
To avoid any troubles with Xenical, you need to know how to use it correctly. First of all, you need to pay attention - if you want to lose just a couple of kilograms, this product is not for you. It is better to pay attention to biologically active supplements or other similar drugs.
In addition, Xenical for weight loss is part of a combination therapy. The patient must first switch to a special low-calorie diet, reduce fat consumption, and only then take this remedy. For example, if your daily menu contains about 2000 kcal, you can consume only 67 g of fat, evenly distributing them throughout the day. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a specialist.
Please note that Xenical for weight loss should only be taken under the close supervision of a doctor, especially if you suffer from diabetes or kidney stones.
The therapy lasts for two months. Every day, the patient takes one capsule of the drug before meals (the number of capsules depends on the number of meals). But if you neglected fats during any of the intakes, then you can skip the capsule. Thus, the average dosage is one to three capsules per day. If you forgot to take the drug, you should not do it later.
Because Xenical has a poor effect on the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, the therapy should also include taking multivitamin complexes. They should be taken two hours after taking the drug.
Using Xenical for Weight Loss During Pregnancy
This drug is a Category B drug, meaning that no risks to the fetus have been found in studies on various animals, but no clinical trials have been conducted. However, several side effects have been observed, but they have not resulted in complications in the development of the fetus.
Xenical is not prescribed to pregnant women because there is no sufficient clinical data on the risks.
Contraindications for use
Of course, all drugs that help reduce excess weight have contraindications. Xenical is no exception. It cannot be taken:
- For patients with cholestasis.
- For those who have not reached the age of 18.
- Patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome.
- In case of intolerance to its components, in particular, orlistat.
Side effects
Usually, side effects from the use of Xenical occur in the gastrointestinal tract, since the drug prevents the absorption of fats in the intestine. Many patients after using the drug note the appearance of oily discharge from the anus, gases with a small amount of discharge, steatorrhea, loose stools and frequent urge to defecate, discomfort of varying intensity in the abdominal area (sometimes with pain), flatulence.
It should be noted that with an increase in the amount of fat that enters the body with food, the possibility of side effects also increases. Their frequency also increases. Before prescribing the drug, patients must be informed of all negative consequences and told what to do to overcome them (follow a special diet).
As a rule, patients suffer from side effects only in the first 3 months of taking the drug. Often they are so minor that patients do not notice them. More frequent effects are: discomfort and pain in the rectum, the appearance of "soft" stool, bloating, inability to hold in bowel movements, problems with gums and teeth. Headaches, infectious diseases, weakness, dysmenorrhea and unreasonable anxiety are more common.
Overdose
During clinical studies, specialists noticed that even with an increased dose of the drug (800 mg per day) there are no undesirable negative effects. Even if people who are overweight increase the dose (240 mg three times a day with a therapy duration of six months), no significant negative effects are found.
If the overdose was too severe, the patient's condition must be monitored for 24 hours.
Interactions with other drugs
Biguanides, amitriptyline, digoxin, atorvastatin, fibrates, losartan, fluoxetine, oral contraceptives, phenytoin, pravastatin, phentermine, nifedipine, warfarin, alcohol, sibutramine do not interact with orlistat. But in some cases, additional monitoring of the patient's condition is required.
"Xenical" with some vitamins (tocopherol, cholecalciferol, beta-carotene) can reduce their absorption. If the patient takes cyclosporine at the same time, the concentration of the latter in the plasma decreases. When taking this drug with amiodarone, the systemic exposure of desethylamiodarone and amiodarone decreases. Sometimes convulsions may develop when orlistat is taken simultaneously with drugs for the treatment of epilepsy.
Storage conditions
It is recommended to store the drug in a damp place inaccessible to children with a temperature not exceeding +25 degrees.
More information about storage conditions can be found in the instructions, which are always added to the drug.
Best before date
The drug cannot be used after the expiration date, which is three years.
Xenical Diet for Weight Loss
Usually, when taking Xenical for weight loss, no special diet is required. But the menu must include only foods with a low amount of fat. For example, you can make up the following daily diet:
- Instead of bacon, boil chicken breast (remember to eat it without the skin).
- Prepare mashed potatoes in water. Do not give milk or butter.
- Be sure to add fresh vegetables and fruits.
- Add yogurts, kefir and cottage cheese with a small amount of fat.
